Greetings,

@DrKodos

Thank you for the kind words.

Is there any progress on sorting out your computer(s)?

Kindest regards,

Nah the only way to accelerate a Mac is with 9.81m/s2

Greetings,

I doubt I'll ever get the opportunity to travel over there...

But if you do manage to sort your wife's computer(s) out through the suggested forum(s) - I should, of course, say "fora" - then you won't need anyone else for company!  Wink

Kindest regards,

Dragan Glas

Yup.  You need to get the Parallels software, but I can run Chessbase and all its engines on a virtual machine on my Mac.  Best of both worlds...

1.  You sort of lost me with "parallels software."  I guess it means to run software built for windows platform?

2.  If this is the case, does no the "paralells software" create a new set of issues?

@Dragan Glas:  I know your integrity is impeccable!  I wish I could afford you.  Alas, I do not believe you will come to my humble abode and coach surf and accept cold cereal, good company and plenty of more work as payment for your skills!

I already feel I owe you something more than internet forum pleasantries.

Should our paths meet, the burgers and beers are most certainly on my tab!

I know I've made some very poor decisions recently, but I can give you my complete assurance that my work will be back to normal. I've still got the greatest enthusiasm and confidence in the mission.

This pC is not infected that I know of.

I have started your recommended path and I will post back here some results when they are known.

That's why so many individuals and businesses need people like me to sort out issues!

One business customer of my previous employer told us that they had backups - no problems.

A colleague, who visited their premises to do some maintenance on their systems, was supposed to be there for half-a-day - it was only at the point where he needed their backups that he discovered they didn't have what they'd claimed. He spent eight days there rebuilding their business data: their IT chap hadn't been taking FULL backups - just partial ones(!)

As he wasn't expected to be there for a long period, no accommodation had been organized (he slept the first night in his car!) and had to buy shirts, etc, as he hadn't brought any changes of clothes with him!

It became the in-joke for several months afterwards whenever he was called out to do similar work - "...Oh, and by the way - they swear they've got backups...! Cheesy "

Kindest regards,

I have considered it.

Can you run Chessbase products on Apple?

Greetings,

I seem to have missed some of the action overnight (here in UK)

With regard to Adobe freezing the computer - assuming that the system is not infected with something else...

There are known conflicts between Adobe, etc, and anti-virus/anti-malware applications - also, some firewalls with added anti-malware utilities can cause conflicts.

Perhaps the major issue is hardware resources.

Some applications are incredibly resource-intensive, in terms of memory-requirements - this can lead to freezes whilst the memory is used by one application before being freed up for the others. Some AV/anti-malware applications - like Norton - are also resource-hogs because they "stick their fingers everywhere", which can cause freezes at the oddest moment.

DrKodos, assuming that this computer is not one of those you know are infected, you might try the following:

Please note that the following is ONLY for computers which have NOT been infected with rootkit/virus/malware!

On the majority of Microsoft-based computers - desktops/laptops - apart from Restore Points and regular backups(!), as part of your regular maintenance, it's best to ensure that you're up-to-date with Microsoft/Windows Updates (the former for Office, etc - the latter for Windows) as well as your AV/anti-malware applications - also, your firewall should have the latest updates. Then clean out the temporary folders - on XP this is through the Disk Cleanup Wizard. Having done that, do a full scan with your AV and any anti-malware applications. If there are still any freezing issues, it could be that your drives need to be defragmented or there are conflicts between applications and/or anti-malware/drivers (video, etc) - Adobe CS3/4 has issues with nVidia drivers, for example.

Although this still does not preclude the possibility of something more insidious being the cause!

For those computers which are infected, I'd strongly advise seeking professional help on one of the earlier-mentioned specialist sites!

Kindest regards,

Dragan Glas

Immediately after typing that last post and hitting enter, my PC started loading Acrobat and a bunch of files and then went nuts! with multiple audio files that I could not stop.  I had to shut down and then something with a .ccApp (Norton I think!?) refused to close was was not responding.

Must be all those bad things I said about there being no god and all.

Why does Adobe keep taking over my PC and freezing everything?
Interesting you should say this. A few days ago I downloaded one of their unsolicited free 'updated versions', and -- coincidence or not -- that day my Outlook (sic -- not Outlook Express) inbox stopped receiving mails, telling me I had 'server or network' problems. (The outbox works fine but for now I have to read incoming mails via the internet.)
I am convinced that Adobe is a platform that is easily exploited by people wishing to deliver malicious things.  Many people tell me otherwise, yet I have encountered nothing but misery associated with any use of any of their products.

I feel that the scanning of their files somehow slips "under the radar" the same way Israeli jets managed to time their flight over Saudi Arabia to coincide Saudi "radar failure" on their mission to knock out Iraqi nuke facilities on June 7, 1981.

In other words, I am highly suspicious.  ;)

Thanks for all info.  I have a lot to digest.

One more question, please.  Why does Adobe keep taking over my PC and freezing everything?

Greetings,

Thank you, Slates  Wink - and I second your sentiments regarding DrKodos... best if he resolves it before his beloved wife finds out...! Shocked

Now, if I only knew as much about chess... Embarrassed

Kindest regards,
