Look for the black repertoire of Lativian GM Normunds Miezis (2540).

He plays the Snake Benoni against 1.d4 (scoring 73% in 65 games against ELO 2355), the Bogo-Indian against 1.d4/2.Nf3 and that´s good enough for > 2500!

OK, he sometimes uses the Budapest Gambit when the spirit moves him and the Nimzo-Indian against strong opponents, but anybody below 2200 should have no need to do so.

His repertoire against 1.e4 is even simpler: he always plays the Sicilian Kan with 4....a6. Nothing else! Very economic, especially because in th3 2...e6 move order the best Anti-Sicilian variations are not available for white.

I still think the most economical opening for black is 1...f6 and 2...g5.

This will save loads of money on chess lessons, books, and databases.

What makes this even more economical, is that you can play 1.f3 and 2.g4 as White and save even more money!

You will even save a tremendous amount of time playing the game!

Probably 1...e5 against everything except 1.d4, 1.Nf3, 1.f4, 1.Nc3, 1.c3 and 1.e3, against which 1...d5 would be my preference.

Alternatively a 1...c5/1...f5 repertoire might be an idea as well, playing 1...c5 against all moves except 1.d4 and 1.b4, in which case Black plays 1...f5.

Note: This post is an edit of the post SWJediKnight quoted. Thanks for the corrections.

You forgot 1.Nf3.  Even I wouldn't be tempted by 1...e5? in that position!  Also 1.Nc3 e5 is difficult due to 2.Nf3 and 3.d4 with an improved Scotch.

I think Black can play a Pirc/King's Indian, or Owen's Defence setup, against just about anything.  The Caro-Kann and Slav are often considered to lead to similar pawn structures.

I guess ... e6 could be the most economic repertoire.
But I don't think it is necessarily the most effective.
The ultimate decision should be based on which opening fits best your style.

There is also the poorly names "Explosive Chess Opening Repertoire for Black"  by Tella and Yrjola based on 1...d6.

I relied on that book when I made my first comeback to chess after a ten year absence. I threw in an occasional Lennigrad Dutch to mix it up using 1....d6  2...f5 against 1.d4

Greetings,

Soltis wrote a book, called Black Defensive System For The Rest Of Your Career, based on 1...,c6/2...,d5.

The idea being that by learning to handle similar positions from the resultant pawn structure you'll minimize the amount of theory, etc, you'll have to study.

Kindest regards,

Dragan Glas

The most economical black repertoire

What black repertoire is the most econimical if we consider the time you have to spend on theory.  Here are some candidates :
1...d6 against  EVERYTHING
1...c6 against  EVERYTHING
1...e6 against EVERYTHING
1...g6 and  1...b6 against EVERYTHING.

If we dont consider the openings above  I guess this repertoire could be a possible candidate :

vs  1.e4     1...e6 FortKnox

vs  1.d4     1....f5 Stonewall

vs  1.c4      1....f5 Stonewall

vs  1.Nf3    1....f5  Stonewall

Can anyone beat this ?   Wink
