I'm following LeeRoth's train of thought.  for me the worst chess books are those that have already been published under a different title.  This makes buying such an expensive book a waste of money.

Perhaps The Psychology of Chess by Reuben Fine deserves special mention for his Freudian analysis of why people play chess.

Maybe there should be a special category for revisions/updates of existing works.  Nunn's revision of 60 Memorable was widely condemned, and I can recall Winter criticizing de Firmian's version of Chess Fundamentals for stripping out games.

Slightly off-topic, but one thing I really can't stand is the practice that some booksellers have of advertising at full price(!) the old version of a book, when a new version has either been released or about to come out.  This is less of a problem today with the internet, but I wonder how many people over the years bought a copy of an ECO volume without realizing that the next edition was already on the way.

'How to fool Fritz' would be my nomination for the worst chess book ever.

'Chess Openings for Black, Explained' isn't a brilliant book but it isn't at all bad. The same cannot be said for 'Chess Openings for White, Explained', which resembles an extreme version of a 'Win with the X' type of book.

None of Schiller's books are chess books, at least according to my local Library and bookstore.

On another note, Everyman have also produced a few poor works in the past few years, albeit none in contention of the title 'worst book ever'.

Slightly different to the topic's heading Ravikumar - Timman's selected games -It's quite a good book on the openings and analysis but it has to contain some of the worst typos/spelling ever. The book nonetheless is a very good read.

Schiller/Keene has made some classics but some of their earlier stuff is high quality.

It's not really fair to nominate Schiller, his books are so resoundingly bad.  Worst recent chess book published by a major chess publishing house would be a much more interesting contest.

I recall Carsten Hansen writing that, of the thousands of chess books he has seen, Schiller's book on the Frankenstein-Dracula variation is by far the worst.

Greetings,

Probably anything by Schiller.

Also the "Repertoire for White/Black" by Alburt et al.

The above nominations are based on what I've heard/seen of them.

Kindest regards,

Dragan Glas

I read a chess book recently and was utterly frustrated how badly the book was written. False evaluation, incomplete covere, meaningless sentences. Waste of money and time !!

Just wandering what would be the list of "worst chess book ever'. Any nominations ?
