St Petersburg, 1914 - but see: Grandmaster section in Wikipedia (can't post link here - for some reason, when you click on the link it claims the article doesn't exist)

I have heard both Salieri and Philidor; the latter a long time ago and well .... Westerinen is also a GM, isn't he? But OK, if you don't believe me, visit the nearest record shop with a section on classical music. If you find a CD entirely devoted to the music of Philidor in the racks I will buy it for you. That's a bet I would not make on Salieri. Neither I would advise you to make that bet on Ustvolskaya.

Don't know if this CD is to be found in many record stores, but at least it exists:

http://www.naxosdirect.com/title/8.557593-94

I do agree with your point though; by the help of youtube I've just listened to Philidor for the first time in my life. I know a lot more about Salieri.

More to the B's in Abba or Andrew Lloyd Webber, but yeah Britney is good enough for the point.

Does Britney Spears compose music or play chess? I always have thought she is too busy forgetting her underwear.

Well I've heard some Salieri and he's great.

Philidor I haven't, but they say Vivaldi was rediscovered
in the 20th century and hardly played before that.

Nope. I prefer the music of Ustvolskaja 8 days a week and she died only a few years ago.

Nope. I prefer the music of Ustvolskaja 8 days a week and she died only a few years ago. The fact is that Philidor, contemporary of Mozart and Haydn, is hardly played anymore. In fact I doubt if anyone on this site has heard a composition of his.

Neither will anyone heard one of Salieri, still not a bad composer. Iirc at least in his time Philidor certainly wasnt a nobody in his time, though success in the arts in your lifetime isnt a measure for recognition when your dead.

PS who the hell is Ustvolskaja? Wink

Sadly the World's tallest Grandmaster just recently past away:

http://www.chessbase.com/newsdetail.asp?newsid=5400

Czech GM Miroslav Filip dies at 80
03.05.2009 – At six foot nine inches Miroslav Filip was an imposing presence at the chess board. But he became a world force in the 50s and 60s, represented his country in 12 consecutive Chess Olympiads and inflicted defeat on no fewer than three world champions (Euwe, Smyslov and Tal). Filip was born in Prague on October 27, 1928, and died there on April 27, 2009. Obituary by Raymond Keene.

... 6 foot 9 inches = 2.05 meters

I must say I am rather disappointed with the progress Carlsen has made on the pitch.

Iirc Agdestein made it to the profs in football (or could have). I remember him doing an interview with Bohm while heading the ball over to each other.
Euwe also did boxing and was a prof in math.
Keres made it to money bills
Philidor was a great composer

Not sure about Nezhmetdinov.  Certainly he was one of the brightest lights, but what about Igor Ivanov, who boasted draws and victories over Kasparov and Karpov?  He would lose silly games, but that was because he would play every week against anybody.

Ivanov certainly ranks as one of the world's best non-GMs.

Igor became GM.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Igor_Vasilyevich_Ivanov

"Although he was clearly a player of grandmaster strength, he did not actually receive the title until the last year of his life, 2005. This delay was caused mainly by bookkeeping issues, and by the Soviet federation refusing to recognize his earlier achievements after he defected."

Anatoly Lein has a really low rating as well if I remember correctly.

For a GM to be in the 2300s (Lein is 2328 FIDE, 2359 USCF) when he is in his late 70s doesn't seem out of the ordinary.  In his late sixties he was 2450 FIDE.  Bisguier should be a somewhat better candidate.

These are the Top 10 lowest rated Grandmasters at the moment (source: ratings.fide.com):

Valery Grechihin - RUS - 2216
Arthur Bisguier - USA - 2228
Herman Suradiradja - INA - 2247
Vasily Malinin - RUS - 2280
Dragoljub Ciric - SRB - 2283
Yair Kraidman - ISR - 2290
Stanimir Nikolic - SRB - 2292
Alexander Panchenko - RUS - 2294
Levente Lengyel - HUN - 2298
Ivan Radulov - BUL - 2303

Real playing at the moment are:
Dragoljub (therefore he should the one to be honoured Wink), Kraidman, Panchenko

Peter Heine Nielsen is the World's tallest Grandmaster, at over 6 feet in height.

The Newest GM-Elect is Robert Hess.

The Most Famous Grandmaster on ICC is Nakamura.

The Grandmaster with the most games played: Korchnoi.

The Shortest Grandmaster? Undecided

The worlds strongest amateur ever of course is Max Euwe.

The strongest well singing GM must be Smyslov. I remember vaguely reading that Smyslov and Taimanov (piano) have recorded some classical songs. Does anybody know more about this?

The strongest alcohol addict is Alekhine.

Who is the GM with the lowest average ELO? Westerinen?

Impressive is the World's oldest Grandmaster (at the moment):

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andor_Lilienthal

Perhaps the first Grandmaster to reach 100 years - this may yield him 100 additional elo points according to Fide-rule 23.4! On the other hand - at some card games you fall back to zero when reach the number 99 at counting - hmm.... Wink

This may be the truth, since Huebner always had an academic life besides chess, despite I don´t know whether he always had a job at an university. But there seem to be lots of things not known about Huebner...

Today I read a description of a book from GM Robert Hübner:

Robert Hübner probably is the world's most modest chess grandmaster.

Grin - Great advertisment!

What world record holders among the grandmasters do you see?

Is there a most expierenced, smallest, longest, funniest, or whatever Grandmaster?

Let's collect them.... Wink
