I play The French already but I sometimes feel I am playing from a weakness (Bad bishop) to another weakness (isolated pawn) so I was considering Taimanov and Caro. I have to make up my mind

I'm a NID/QID/Catalan player as black, and play the French against 1.e4.

I think looking towards either the French, or Caro-Kann would be your best bet. The French is more active, the Caro-Kann more solid. The Caro-Kann probably fits the best, overall, in my opinion, given the French positions are more wide-ranging.

Sicilian Defenses that use light squared themes may seem like an appropriate choice, but the play is considerably different from the quiet positions that NID/QID/Catalan players are used to. I wouldn't recommend it for that reason, unless you're simply trying to expand the number of positions you can handle.

Openings for Black According to Karpov isn't good compared to the rest of the series, but the general idea of the repetoire is spot-on, in my opinion. You don't get more solid than NID/QID/Catalan/English 4 Knights/Caro-Kann. That's a repetoire that can carry someone throughout their entire chess career as black.

Kan or Taimanov Sicilians would fit well imo.

How about the Caro Kahn?!?!?  Or maybe a little sharper but with good pawn structure - The French??? (well except for the bishop)  I would choose the caro.  The only thing that may be an issue I think is the advance with Nc3 and g4 ect.  this may be a bit sharper than you might want, but nothing is perfect.  Plus you have to play vs the Gambits in the Queen's Indian, so the advance caro might not be too much a problem...  Oh the Taimanov might be sharper than you want but its a good choice!!!

Ok... let me explain myself. When I use the Nimzo/Queen Indian as Black I feel I am playing a solid but active defence. No easy way for White to kill the game into an end game. Black is solid but not passive. The positions do not need to know a LOT of very accurate moves to survive. Does black have a similar defence against 1.e4?

I'm not sure if this really belongs in the general chess section, but I don't know where else to put it.  I'm tempted to put it in the Nimzo-QID section as it would probably get more responses.

Any ideas?

Btw, nice cat!
