I'll start with my best 5:

Bronstein: Zurich International 1953
Fischer: My 60 Memorable Games
Soltis: Soviet Chess 1917-1991
Tal: My Life & Games
Burgess et al: The Mammoth Book of the World's Greatest Chess Games

I totally agree with the first two but there is nothing on defence, endings or correspondence chess.

In no particular order

Defence - Secrets of Chess Defence - Marin
Correspondence -64 great Chess games - Tim Harding
Fundamental Chess Endings _Karsten Muller and Frank lamprecht

I admit I own all the books so far nominated on this thread and they are all special.

I am hopelessly addicted to the King's Gambit

Just pushed up this thread to see if anybody still liked to vote. Let's give it a week before posting the final list.

Cheers

Very surprised that no-one has mentioned Tony Miles - It's Only Me. That would be my #1. Also Morphy's Chess Masterpieces by Reinfeld and someone else, whose name temporarily escapes me.

Chess for Children - Bott and Morrison

That was my first chess book, I remember the cartoons of bishops hooking  knights with a crozier.

Or to illustrate the value of the pieces they had a big set of weighing scales with a piece on one side and its value in pawns on the other

1. My 60 Memorable Games, Fischer
2. Alexander Alekhine's Chess Games 1902-46, Skinner & Verhoeven
3. Tal-Botvinnik 1960, Tal
4. Zurich 1953, Bronstein
5. The Golden Treasury of Chess, IA Horowitz

The last for sentimental reasons, as it was one of my first chess books, and because I couldn't decide on a 5th choice from among many worthy contenders.

Blokh's "The Art of Combination" is one of the best tactics books around. Tough to find though.

1.  Grandmaster of Chess, Paul Keres
2.  Practical Chess Endings, Paul Keres
3.  Tal-Botvinnik: The Match for the World Chess Championship, 1960, Mikhail Tal
4.  Marshall's Best Games of Chess, Frank J. Marshall
5.  The Golden Treasury of Chess, I.A. Horowitz

(The first is a collection of Keres' games in 3 volumes, edited by Harry Golombek.  It has been reissued two volumes, with minor emendations by John Nunn, Paul Keres: the Road to the Top and Paul Keres: the Quest for Perfection

I almost put Bloch's tactics book, to which I often go back.  I share Willempie's regard for Van Perlo's Endgame Tactics, but it didn't make my top five.

Just to clarify a few things:

parisestmagique: Kurt Richter: Aventures et mésaventures en milieu de jeu
I can find no trace of this book. Are you sure it's the one?

TonyRo: Tal’s Best Games.
Are you referring to the book by the man himself called "Life & Games of M. T." or are you referring to the books by Clarke or Cafferty called "Tal's Best Games" or maybe some other work?
