"Move that one of your pieces, which is in the worst plight, unless you can satisfy yourself that you can derive immediate advantage by an attack."

I found this in Lasker's Manual of Chess, without a citation

I am most familiar with "Makagonov's principle." But I could have sworn I read Tarrasch saying something similar.

Also of note: Dvoretsky has recently had two articles on Chess Cafe about "The Worst-Piece Principle," which he attributes to Alexei Kosikov.

So...are fifty different people claiming to have invented the principle, or are they all adding an ever-so-slightly different spin on the same idea and putting their name on that?  Huh

Well, at least it is called "Makagonov's rule" by GM Mikhalchisin on this DVD (http://www.chessdevon.co.uk/HTML/archives/chessbase/Arch13/base.htm).

I think it was Tarrasch - I think someone wrote a chess book caled "The tarrasch Formula " or something like that talking about the idea of improving your worst piece.

Also in a Karpov video he says one of his bggest contribution to chess theory is how to play against an opponent who has one badly placed piece

If my memory does not lie me it was Jacob Aaagaard who said this in one of his books. I can not remember exactly whether it was Excelling at Chess or Excelling at Positional Chess.

I highly esteeem Aagaard's works, but I remember this was taught to me a long time before he wrote any books.

I know this as Anderssen's principle.

In the Immortal Game his worst pieces were the rooks...
so "improve" has to be understood in a broad sense  Wink

This must be a "spin off" from a quote of Tarrash / Capablanca.

Aagard was quoting someone else.  I know that Pachman wrote it, but I think it predates even him.  Was it Botvinnik? Or earlier.

.
WHO was the first person to say the well-known chess maxim....

"If you do not know what else to do, improve your worst piece."

....and where did he say/write it (any CITATION would be helpful)?
And, do I have the exact quote worded correctly?

Thanks.
