I have these DVD's now. I have no difficulty in understanding him. Actually, I quite like the way he speaks.

Writing in such a topic is dangerous, if you remember Lichtenberg. ("Ein Buch ist ein Spiegel. Wenn ein Affe hineinschaut, kann kein Apostel herausschauen." - A book is a mirror. If a monkey looks into it, it's impossible that an apostle looks out of it.) The same holds for videos today.  Huh

As native German I listen to Müller on the introducing videos on CBM's sometimes. He could do something for his style of presentation. But he's talking about chess and I never saw someone in my 56 years talking about chess, who could not do something for his presentation technique. Look at V. Hort. His failures in this became a well liked brand, not to say sometimes loved brand.

As long as I'm able to understand the content of a chess DVD the presentation doesn't count imo. It is possible to stop and replay chess teaching videos. So a badly prepared presentation with wrong contents can't be saved. Good preparation and knowledge about the topic is really the more important part of a chess presentation. This is no show business. (And personally I hope it won't ever come down to show business.)

My bad. I should have clarified. FCE=Fundamental Chess Endings

Please note that the topic is about the speaking style of the lecturer in Endgames and not about the quality of the chess presented.

Hoember,

As you have already noticed in other threads, your original thread idea may transform baed upon what others write.  Please don't be offended if others are inspired to write about topics that appear tangential to your original comment.  In fact, I consider it a healthy sign that a topic grows with each contribution!

Cheers!

I am talking about the DVDs Chess Endgames 2: Rook Endings and Chess Endgames 3: Major Piece Endgames, from this series: http://www.chessbase.com/newsdetail.asp?newsid=3066.

I did not notice him using any sort of "weird mixture of English and German", only English, unless you count words like zugzwang.

In my dictionary the word gabbling means speaking or saying something very quickly and without making your meaning clear, usually because you are nervous or excited.

A friend of mine, who has seen parts of Vol. 2 (rook endings) has just told me that he (the lecturer) is impetuous and that there are points in the video when he thinks K.M. is right in the process of going mad. Cheesy Cheesy

Yes, I think Chessbase, seeing his lectures, should have shifted direction a little, by the publication of their first Chessbase Fritz Parody Trainer. Cheesy The lecturer is definitely a genius in the field.
(Actually, I have long been thinking on making a video parody of CBFTs myself, and he is giving me tons of hints.)

I'll extract some seconds of the voice in question, and upload it somewhere and give you the link. (I am really beginning to suspect we are talking about different CBFTs.)

Please note that the topic is about the speaking style of the lecturer in Endgames and not about the quality of the chess presented.

I like Karsten's style. Despite the fact that his english is not perfect (but I do not know a chess player speaking perfectly foreign language), his material is clearly presented and in a good form and consequence.
And speaking about the chess DVDs - I would prefer to get a good quality chess material presented by the author instead of perfect language and body style (camera presense).
For me DVDs from Roman Dzindzichashvili, Andrew Martin and Adrian Mikhalchishin are simply waste of money and time.

If you claim there is no problem with a gabbling lecturer, then I am a professor of rethoric. Tongue

And yes, he talks some weird mixture of English and German on the videos I have seen.

I have his DVDs and have absolute no problem with his presentation. I am a university lecturer myself and understand a bit about speech and presentation.

In fact I find he tries very hard to conform to this ideal of public speaking/braodcasting, ie, speak without much saliva in your mouth. So he is forever, swallowing his saliva silently, and you can see his adam's apple wobble .....

My 9 y o son also enjoys his DVD.

I have all 4 of his DVDs as well as his FCE book and I absolutely loved them all.

I admit that I can't recall the number of times I had to replay a particular segment because he sometimes moves along at rocket speed,"And now we have.... zugzwang, zugzwang, zugzwang,  and finally fatal zugzwang." You can tell he really knows his stuff inside out.

The organisation of his material is similar to his FCE book so I had little trouble following them and I can always look it up after viewing his lectures.

Of all the lectures and Fritz Trainer DVDs, I rate his Endgame DVDs amongst the best of the Chessbase DVDs (on par with Daniel King's Power Play series) in terms of clarity of presentation and knowledge of presented material. His German accent takes a little bit of getting used to but nothing worth getting fussed over. He reminds me in many ways of my university lecturers.

For instructional value alone, it's the best simply because his lessons will never go out of fashion. Smiley

Would I recommend his Chessbase DVDs to anyone wishing to know more about endgames? You bet I would.

I have two of these DVDs and don't have the slightest problem with his speaking style.  In fact I found it rather charming.

I may have sounded a little arrogant, that's why some people started to argue.
But if I had opened a topic, titled innocently "Do you think K.M.'s way of lecturing is unobjectionable in Endgames?", attaching a poll, with such options as "Yes", and "No", then the ratio would have long been 10:2 in favor of the latter. (Two for the former, because there are still those taking it personally for various reasons.)
Or perhaps I should have opened a poll about multiple Fritz Trainers by different lecturers, including K.M, so as not to seem hostile towards anyone.

I don't see the problem. I don't see that he has a speech impediment, what I hear is a German accent. I love his DVDs and his presentation, and I watch them frequently. In fact, I wish he would do more.

Do you really mean "impediment"? I like Mueller's accent and his turns of phrase

"Bodycheck!"

"Und no furce in zee vurld can stop it!"

I think the DVDs are great, some I've watched twice  Cool
