I don't think that 1200's should be spending too much time worrying about pawn structure.  How to conduct attacks against the uncastled king; how against the castled king; tactics in general; and elementary endings should take up most of their time.  But the best "positional" book to start out with would be one that explained how to play with and against the IQP.  Baburin's Winning Pawn Structures (a misleading title) is a good one.

Also I do have a fondness for Pawn Power in Chess by Hans Kmoch.  The terminology is weird, but the ideas are good.

But very few games at this level are won because one side has better pawn structure.

'Simple Chess' by Michael Stean. One of the best books available for studying positional play, explaining difficult positional concepts with relative simplicity.

What "positional" book for a 1230 player?

My rating is about 1230, so I know it is tactics tactics tactics for me to study.

But I am wanting to learn to plan a little and would like a book on positional chess. All the ones people recommend are really too advanced for me right now.

I was wondering if Seirawan's Winning Chess Strategies could be considered a "positional" book for someone in my rating group.

If not. what would you suggest?

Thanks,
sagwa
