Don't know offhand why that Four Pawns line would be great for White, given that 6...Nd7 7. Nf3 0-0 would just transpose to known stuff.

After 1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 Na6?!, White should play 3.Nc3 c5 (3...e6 4.e4 is great for White, as is 3...g6 4.e4 d6 5.f4 Bg7 6.e5) 4.d5 and 5.e4 when at best Black will reach a poor man's Benoni.

However, 1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 a6!? is a very interesting sideline that has been used on several occasions by Bosboom, although 3.Nc3 c5 4.dc5 slightly favours White after either 4...Qa5 or 4...e6.

Edit: Instead of 3...g6 4.e4 d6 5.f4, White should prefer 4.g3 Bg7 5.Bg2 d6 6.0-0 0-0 7.Nf3 with a slight advantage.

No one needs to show you that this move is bad, you should know it's bad already! It places your knight on a suboptimal square, when there are clearly more purposeful and less commital moves. Like Kyle said, White could certainly find and steer the game into positions where you'd certainly wish your knight was on c6 or d7.

An offhand suggestion would be to play à la the Saemisch or Fianchetto KID, where ...Na6 is rarely optimal.

Hi,

I was just randomly looking at some positions, when I saw this move, that was I think never played before. 1. d4 Nf6 2. c4 Na6. The knight goes to a6 in benonis, in the KID and in the QID/NID, sometimes though. I couldn't find any games with it, nor a refutation. Now I'm totaly confused Shocked . Please show me that this move is bad!!!

Thanks
