Well of course, Washington Square Park in New York City is a storied outdoor venue.  Another good one is Dupont Circle in Washington DC.  The Lindenhof in Zurich is a good place for playing on giant chess sets; there were three there when I visited.  The players were quite friendly and mostly spoke English.

We used to have a good chess club at Keesler Air Force Base, Biloxi, Mississippi, which is the major technical training center for USAF.  We sometimes held our tournaments at a glassed-in pavillion which was located on a slight rise overlooking the Back Bay of Biloxi in the base's Marina Park.  It was not quite outdoors, I admit, but with its big windows and splendid views of the bay, that was by far the nicest place I have ever played chess.

Funny enough, just reading the title, before clicking on the thread, I immediately thought Jardin de Luxembourg! I was sorely tempted to play when I was there, but I was with my wife, so I passed.

Come to Munich! Here they actually organize some of the summer tournaments competely outdoors, actually, in the beer gardens! Grin And on weekends people are playing in various open-air locations across the city. I know at least two near to my place Wink

Of course, that only applies to late spring - early autumn season, but that's still a good half a year to play chess outdoors!

Perhaps this falls within the domain of the most extreme places to play chess, but a couple friends of mine played chess on the top of Mount Elbert, Colorado's highest peak (14,400'+).

The best place I've played chess outdoors was in my back yard. There's a pond with birds and fish, beer, and great food!

I have never been there but the Thermal baths in Budapest could also be very nice.
There are also many places in the Moscow parks where it is quite nice.

Yusupov once said that “The problem with the Dutch Defence is that later in many positions the best move would be ...f5-f7” but he is surely wrong.

I was lucky enough to go to Paris for a few days last week.

Whilst walking through the Luxemburg gardens (a total delight by the way) there were several outdoor games , blitz as well as serious going on.
I sat down played a couple of games in lovely weather and great surroundings with great people.
Thats what i call Chess. Smiley

Anyone else know of good outdoor places in the world to play?

Regards All
