Nice Najdorf (Karpov System) going on in Jakovenko-Carlsen, If anyone is interested you can follow it at chessdom (with some -not too dense- analysis in English).

I don't think Jakovenko was surprised with Carlsen choosing the Najdorf over the Dragon or the Sveshnikov as it is more or less obvious Carlsen is using some of Kasparov's older repertoire (Kasparov himself told in a recent interview that during the K-K rapid match, he was avoiding using some of the Grunfled stuff, so not to give away Carlsen's preparation for China).

Still, Jakovenko chose a not so sharp system in order to avoid theoretical surprises in the Bg5 or Be3 lines (this used to be the typical 'Soviet' approach for dealing with surprises).

Myself, I wasn't expecting the 11. ... Nb6-c4 manoeuvre (I prefer Rc8 & then Re8 here in anticipation of an eventual Nd5 / later in the game Carlsen's Rd8 may be slightly exposed to Bb6 tactics), but it seems to have worked just fine..

Yes, senseless to keep the poll after the tournament has started.

Have you noticed that there are more votes for Carlsen now and none for anyone else?

Hmmm... Cool

Carlsen youth & talent + Kasparov coaching & opening DB = mighty force!

Nice see the Makogonov  system making an appearance at this high level. I just hope that Carlsen will not make it a regular weapon, since it will become more popular and KID players will be better prepared for it.

I hope Topalov will win but now I see how the kid kills the KID, I am afraid it will be mre interesting betting on who will be secund to him.

Yusupov once said that “The problem with the Dutch Defence is that later in many positions the best move would be ...f5-f7” but he is surely wrong.

I just glanced at the Carlsen-Topalov game. (I couldn't open the link provided, so I just went to ChessBase.) I'm not normally a fan of 5.h3 and g4 in the KID Classical, but Carlsen made it work beautifully.  Topalov was almost unrecognisable in that game!

For those who don't think confidence affects playing strength, Carlsen's fast start will be hard to explain.

Round 2 Results:

Leko-Radjabov .5-.5
Jakovenko-Wang Yue .5-.5
Carlsen-Topalov 1-0

Annotations to Carlsen's game are available at http://games.chessdom.com/nanjing/carlsen-topalov-2009-live.

Standings:

Carlsen 2/2 (against the top seed and 3rd seed)
Radjabov, Jakovenko, Wang Yue 1/2 (these three are yet to play Carlsen)
Leko, Topalov 0.5/2

With a full point lead already after only 2 rounds, Carlsen's chances of tournament victory are looking quite high.

Hello:

Thought the following comment was interesting:
""The Nanjing games are homework by Garry Kasparov and me," said
Magnus Carlsen at the press conference. "Today's game was provided by Garry."

Haven't really followed him closely so I am wondering is this a typical comment. Or is this the start of some psychological games prompted by his new trainer?

Toodles,

Gerry

Round 1 Results:

Carlsen-Leko 1-0
Topalov-Jakovenko .5-.5
Wang Yue-Radjabov .5-.5

Round 2 Pairings:

Leko-Radjabov
Jakovenko-Wang Yue
Carlsen-Topalov

This should be a very exciting pairing! Smiley If I recall correctly, in their last encounter, Carlsen achieved his first win against a 2800+ player using the 11.e4 line of the 6.Bf6 Qf6 7.e3 Anti-Moscow variation, which was covered in either Yearbook 91 or 92.

I will probably close the poll after Round 7 or 8, depending on the tournament standings.

I'm rooting for Carlsen and Leko, but I voted for Topalov.  Topalov is due a victory, and he seems to do best when the attention is focused on another player.  This seems like an ideal opportunity for him, as long as he enjoys the local cuisine!
