This was arguably the greatest achievement in the history of tournament chess.

Polgar's "Sack of Rome" is perhaps more impressive.

I forget which Candidates tournament it was, but didn't Kotov have an absolutely amazing performance in the mid 1950s-early 60s?

A single tournament isn't enough to get too excited about, but Carlsen is really showing us something with the way he is winning these games.  He seems to be at a different level than these 2700+ patzers.  Shocked

The field at Linares 1994 was one of the strongest ever, and Kasparov prior to the event commented that the winner could call himself "world champion of tournament chess". He were to regret having said that. Karpov smashed the world elite to bits and pieces with an amazing score of 11/13 (+9 =4 -0) and a record performance rating of 2985, after having won his first 6 games and left Kasparov and Shirov 2.5 points behind. This was arguably the greatest achievement in the history of tournament chess.

Karpov´s performance was nearly 3000!!

and that was before the rating inflation really began to tell...

If nothing else works, a total pig-headed unwillingness to look facts in the face will see us through.

This now looks set to become on of the best tournament performances ever on top level!

That's impressive indeed.

If he "only" draws the remaining five games his perfomance will be 2911.
To break the record he needs 3.5 out of the five last games. That would result in a performance of 3002!  Shocked

Indeed and a new rating of 2801 at the age of 19. Maybe he´s the first person who breaks the 2900 barrier!?!?

The older, the better - over 2200 and still rising.

This now looks set to become one of the best tournament performances ever on top level!

Does anybody know/have an opinion on who currently holds that record?

Linares 1994 comes to mind, and was on top of the list at www.chessmetrics.com (see "Summary"). According to Sonas, the 10 best tournament performances (excluding matches) up to 2004 were:

#1     Anatoly Karpov        2899 performance: 11/13 (85%) vs 2729    Linares, 1994
#4     Garry Kasparov        2881 performance: 12/14 (86%) vs 2692    Tilburg, 1989
#5     Emanuel Lasker       2878 performance: 18/22 (82%) vs 2667    London, 1899
#6     Garry Kasparov        2877 performance: 10.5/14 (75%) vs 2758    Linares, 1999
#11     Mikhail Tal             2869 performance: 20/28 (71%) vs 2716    Bled/Zagreb/Belgrade (Candidates), 1959
#12     Alexander Alekhine 2865 performance: 13/14 (93%) vs 2626    San Remo, 1930
#13     Garry Kasparov      2863 performance: 10/13 (77%) vs 2737    Linares, 1993
#15     Alexander Alekhine 2859 performance: 19.5/24 (81%) vs 2644    Bled, 1931
#16     Garry Kasparov      2856 performance: 11.5/15 (77%) vs 2715    Belfort (World Cup), 1988
#17     Garry Kasparov      2855 performance: 10/13 (77%) vs 2728    Linares, 1992

(NB: performances given in "Chessmetrics rating", not FIDE Elo)

I don't know if anyone has surpassed Karpov in the last few years?

Well another convincing win today from Carlsen - +4 after 5 games, Radjabov play looked very risky, and was duely punished in double quick time

Yes, I like Dennis Monokroussos comment:
there are three groups.
1. Carlsen
2. Those who have lost to Carlsen
3. Those who still have to meet Carlsen.

This was before Carlsen's only draw, but still seems appropriate.

Although he getting trained by Kasparov and the openings are clearly signed GK I do find Carlsen's style very different compared to GK. He kinds of keeps pressing untill his opponent drops the ball. Very impressive. Perhaps it is too early but he keeps this up it might just be a matter of time before he becomes WC.

Wow, only Carlsen appears to be able to win a game in this tournament.  Shocked

of course after magnus had 2/2 everyone knew from the beginning magnus was going to win this Smiley

If I recall correctly, Carlsen was way ahead in the poll before the first round.

Now had the news not broken that Kasparov was coaching Carlsen, I suspect he would not have come ahead in the poll.

Well, tbh I wasn't (was waiting for Radjabov), but now it's 3/4 with a nice overall performance and some cool defence today. Radjabov on the other hand missed a good chance today (both games turned in late middlegame / endgame in favour of Carlsen).

Round 3 Results:

Wang Yue-Leko .5-.5
Radjabov-Topalov .5-.5
Jakovenko-Carlsen 0-1  Cool
