I think it is a good news that we have a new face in the top elite, and potential new World Champion, but...
Do we think that such a young player and man may have some power against the FIDE system. Do you think that Magnus would be able to chnage something and to put a new order in the chaos... Frankly speaking i doubt...
Anyway I like Magnus's play and I am his full supporter Wink

It's not that he's not good enough...but the WC cycle being the way it is he won't have a chance.

What would be stopping him from qualifying by rating (or being nominated by the organizers) for the Candidates thing next year, for starters?

Everyone is getting all excited But, I think we are getting ahead of ourselves here. This is just one tournament. It it way too early to make predictions. I do hope that MC goes on to become the next great thing becuase I think the chess world really does need another dominant world champion in the make of Kasparov. But at this point in time, we do not know yet.

Yeah,

It does seem that Carlsen will be the next K in respect to domination. He still has quite a way to go,  and (almost) certainly will not challenge for Kasparov's title of youngest World Champion ever.  But he does have a real shot at being one of a very few World Champions before the age of 25.

You think Carlsen almost certainly won't become WC challenger within the next ~3.5 years?  Hmmm.

This was arguably the greatest achievement in the history of tournament chess.

Polgar's "Sack of Rome" is perhaps more impressive.

1989 Yes 8.5/9 as a 2300 FM beating 8 GMs and drawing a GM underdog in all 9 games to finish with a 2900 performance rating.

I was just checking the FIDE ratings to see was there any chance of the kid going World number 1 after this, but no in fairness to Topalov thats some rating he has there - 2813. The kid will be doing well to catch Anand for number 2 spot, still it seems inevitable now Carlsen is the future of chess and the next dominant power after the 2 K's.

Another win for MC today, maybe the pattern is that he goes +1 on everybody? Smiley

Still a chance for him to go 2-0 against Radjabov and Jakovenko. But two draws to finish off is  more likley. We shall see.

He might go for QGD against 1.d4 or e5 against e4,
but let's wait and see.

Nope, a Svesh it was, topa had a pawn more but it looks like MC had full comp all the way to a draw

We are all so caught up in this tournament that drawing with Black using the same opening against two of the best players in the world is implicitly a problem area for Carlsen.  Wow! Shocked

The last 30 years or so this only happened to the two big K's - White trying to maintain equality against them playing Black ...  Shocked indeed.

It is worth noting that Carlsen's two draws in this tournament have both been on the Black side of the Grunfeld, which incidentally was a problem area for Kasparov in his match against Kramnik.

Ok, this, perhaps more than the score is impressive:

I was kind of thinking the same thing. If Kasparov and Carlsen would think it wasn't adequate Carlsen probably wouln't play it.
