And Magnus tallied one more win in the last round...just for good measure. Wow.  Shocked Shocked Shocked Lips Sealed

Carlsen may be having a dream tournament, but Leko's having a nightmare of one.  Uggh.

We just have to see how he holds over a longer period. A few years back Topalov seemed invincible, but he now has lost that image.

Well to be honest there is a big difference. Carlsen has been touted as the next big thing since he was 13 years old. If goes on to dominate like K&K nobody would be surprised.

I'd be. It is a big step to go to the top, but it is a much bigger step even to be dominating that top. Only the 2Ks and maybe Fischer have done that since WW2.

As usual Topalov is keeping up to date fast - his win with the Gruenfeld as Black against Leko has got to be one of the highlights of the tournament.

Yet another Grunfeld draw! This is really turning into a nightmare opening for Magnus......  Tongue

Anyway, congrats to Magnus for removing all theoretical doubt about winning the tournament!

Still a chance for him to go 2-0 against Radjabov and Jakovenko. But two draws to finish off is  more likley. We shall see.

Yep, MC got a seemingly effortless Grunfeld draw as black today.

Topalov, on the other hand, made the most of the void after the retirement of Kasparov. He was, for a short period, able to raise his level above his peers. He hasn't been able to sustain that level (although I wouldn't count him out yet) but then again few people would have guessed he was able to reach that level in the first  place (hence the accusations of cheating after San Luis).

I agree about luck.  But I think people are getting excited not because of one tnmt.  Rather, it is the next step on the long climb up the mountain.  Carlsen isn't in view of the summit yet, but he seems to be climbing easily in the rarefied air.

Everyone is getting all excited But, I think we are getting ahead of ourselves here. This is just one tournament. It it way too early to make predictions. I do hope that MC goes on to become the next great thing becuase I think the chess world really does need another dominant world champion in the make of Kasparov. But at this point in time, we do not know yet.

I agree. It will be interesting to see if he fullfills his potential. But there are still many obstacles in the way. Some luck is required: poor Keres never got a decent shot at the crown while Kramnik made the most of his when he got the chance. And also how does he deal with the strain of a WC-match?

2011 really? So if Topalov wins the title he'll have to defend it the following year?

I thought 2011 was rather the Candidates tournament (or matches, anyway).

There is supposed to be a WC match in 2011 (and 2010 of course); I don't know about after that.  Carlsen will be at Kasparov's WC age in mid-2013.

He still has quite a way to go,  and (almost) certainly will not challenge for Kasparov's title of youngest World Champion ever.  But he does have a real shot at being one of a very few World Champions before the age of 25.

You think Carlsen almost certainly won't become WC challenger within the next ~3.5 years?  Hmmm.

Well the cycle being now 2 years, 2010 is Anand-Topalov which brings us to 2012, when Magnus will be already 22 (Kasparov's record).

Edit: I see that Magnus was born on November 30th, which means he will have one shot.

... Do you think that Magnus would be able to chnage something and to put a new order in the chaos... Frankly speaking i doubt...
Anyway I like Magnus's play and I am his full supporter Wink

With some more experience and with Kasparov as mentor I think he will become more demanding in a positive way.

What kind of proof is that?
