Thank you very much.  I knew I could read the PGN spec and troubleshoot, but I honestly had no idea when I would be able to undertake the task.

Well, there was something wrong with the pgn-header in the site line - maybe the direct link to [site: "www.chesscube.com"].
Anyway, if you want to post a pgn here...you have to delete this line from the pgn-header, or just to delete "www." and ".com" by hand.

Could someone let me know what is hanging up the following Chessbase/Fritz12 pgn from getting hung up on the site?  Correcting the code is okay, but I want to know so I can fix it and post to the site when I want to.

I just used copy game, and then I pasted it here, but I get that the first move is bad.  Any assistance is appreciated.

Open the file ('cbv' or 'cbh') with Fritz, open the game you need, then from the main menu (File) "Save Game As", files of type ('databases' drop down menu) choose 'pgn' and save it. And you will have a pgn-file which you can post here.  Wink

Okay, I have Fritz 12 on some Chessbase platform.  It's PGN files are not the real deal.  What do I need to do to make them real pgn files postable here?

none of the programs mentioned run with wine. One ugly, but functional solution, is to install VirtualBox, install xp within it, install chessbase there...do the conversion and save the files base to linux.

that's how i do it, anyway.

*.cbv is compressed/zipped Chessbase format. When unpacked, it becomes a set of 10+ files *.cbh, etc. These file formats are all Chessbase proprietary format. In other words, only Chessbase knows how to convert them to PGN.

In order to convert cbv->pgn you need to buy/download/install some Chessbase software like Fritz, Chessbase or the cost-free Chessbase Light. But all there programs are available as Windows software only.

Free tools are not around for this job. (SCID won't help either.)

I have been in a similar situation before, and this is what I do (with CB10):

a) Converting CBV to PGN: Create a new database, but instead of setting the database to be a CBV file, set the database as a PGN file. Then copy and paste the games from your CBV database to your PGN database. This will let you send ChessBase files through the Internet, and post game files at this Forum.

b) Converting PGN to CBV: This is the same, but in reverse: Download the database as a PGN file. Then open the program using ChessBase (you may need to extract the files first depending on your software), and create a new database in cbv format. Copy and paste the games from the PGN database to the CBV database.

If you don't have ChessBase, then I cannot help you as I have never needed to search for alternative solutions.

Convert *.cbv-files to pgn

There are a bunch of pgn-viewers available online. I was wondering if there is a *.cbv-viewer online, or at least a program which converts *.cbv-files to pgn-files.
I'm working under Linux, and installing scid is unfortunately not an option...
