Katar, I agree that many of the openings suggested here are not particularly aggressive in their approach, though I have found that aggression seems to come more from building a good position and being aware of tactical opportunities than from playing a certain opening.  In my own repertoire, the 3 f4 Vienna is considered pretty aggressive I suppose, while the Scotch 4 Knights is not. However, I get a lot of fun action in both.  For your suggestion of 1 e4 e5 2 d4 I would think that Danish Gambit would be considered much more aggressive than the Center Game.  I'll have to take a look at the Dangerous Weapons book to see what they propose there.

Well, if we define "aggressive" as "building a good position" then the term loses all meaning, no?

I take aggressive to mean: "accepting risk in exchange for practical attacking chances against the opponent's king" and "tending to minimize the opponent's margin of error".  The OP's other criterion, "theory-lite" limits the options considerably...  I think Center Game is the cream of the crop as far as maximizing these 2 criteria.  Alekhine's "Half-Danish" (Nxc3) is another way to go, where white has barely enough comp for one pawn but no more than equality.

Mainline Danish gambit is somewhat less "aggressive" IMO because black more or less forces an early queenswap and equal endgame in the two most popular lines (Capablanca defense & Schlecter defense).  I was corrected in the other thread that the Be3 instead of Nf3 prevents the Capablanca defense and keeps queens on.  But this Be3 move order is still quite less common.

In the CG white sacs a pawn for longterm attacking potential without anything concrete, and black can't force an early endgame.

Markovich, you are correct that I see 1 e4 e5 2 Nc3 Nf6 3 f4 exf4 4 e5 Qe7 5 Qe2 Ng8 all the time.  I guess white isn't winning, but it's a pretty nice position to be in after five moves.

Center Game fits the bill.
1.e4 e5 2.d4 exd4 3.Qxd4 Nc6 4.Qe3

Andrew Greet of Worrall fame wrote 3 chapters on this in DW: 1.e4 e5.

I don't think many of the suggestions in this thread are "aggressive"...  certainly they are fine ways to play, but eg i don't think the Worrall system can be considered "aggressive" as far as chess openings go.  Just my op.

Markovich, I am an adult (50+) rated between 1500-1600 though I optimistically consider myself "an improver".  Since generally adopting your recommendations on openings (1...e5, Tarrasch as black and open games as white) a couple of years ago and concentrating more of my time on tactics, I've improved from around 1100 to close to 1600.

When I play the Vienna gambit at my level, I rarely see what I consider the best line for black:  1 e4 e5 2 Nc3 Nf6 3 f4 d5 4 fxe5 Nxe4 5 d3 Nxc3.  When I do see this I usually continue 6 bxc3 d4 7 Bb2 which seems about equal to me.  Most of the time, I get stuff like this (from a blitz game last night):  1 e4 e5 2 Nc3 Nf6 3 f4 Nc6 4 fxe5 Nxe5 5 d4 Ng4? 6 e5.

In the mainline, many people are too tempted to resist playing 5...Qh4+.  I beat a master in an OTB simul with the well known line: 6 g3 Nxg3 7 Nf3 Qh5 8 Nxd5 Na6 9 Nf5 where black will lose his knight.

I congratulate you on your rapid improvement, and I'm overjoyed if I made any contribution to it.

At the level you're playing, I think 3.f4 is an excellent choice, and I would stick with it, particularly given your practical successes with it.  I imagine you've also had some wins with 3...exf4? 4.e5.

Johnny Hector used to play 3.f4 and 5.d3 all the time; it would probably be worth looking at his games.

@Willempie:  Very interested in the delayed Qe2 you mentioned.  Do you think there's any benefit to playing this kind of line within the Ruy Lopez to at least get used to some of the Ruy positions?  I keep hearing that playing the Ruy Lopez can be a fundamental part of chess development at 2000+.

Well I tend to agree with the idea that the Ruy is quite a fundamental opening to get to grips with. The delayed Qe2 is the official Worrall if memory serves and Greet also mentions it in his intro. I dabble with these lines from time to time and I think they are a good tool for understanding the more closed Ruy positions. You get the same structure as in a lot of the closed lines, the only difference is that you developed a little more slowly and that thus Bc5 and d5 lines can equalise, whence my remark about delaying it one move where you can avoid a lot of that. Basically you get similar positions to the closed but with much less theory so it is a great learning tool. On the other hand black's task is easier than in the closed lines, so at some point you prolly want to "upgrade" (which is far less of a problem as you are used to the positions).

In any case since you have Greet's book anyway, the chapters on the minor lines are also quite good in particular the lines against the Cordel (3..Bc5) and the Jaenisch.

If nothing else works, a total pig-headed unwillingness to look facts in the face will see us through.

2...Nf6 3 f4 I enjoy the Vienna gambit.  If black really knows the line he gets equality but I rarely see anyone play the correct moves.

I wonder what level you're playing at.  When I was playing 1...e5, I always made sure to stay fresh with my preparation in the sharper lines, of which this is one.  I find the 3.f4 Vienna attractive, but after studying it quite a bit I was unable to find any convincing chances for White.  Another NM and I once played some training games in this and reached the conclusion that Black is very healthy and even gets winning chances, whether after 3...d5 4.fxe5 Nxe4 White plays 5.Nf3 or the more tactical and perhaps more challenging 5.d3.

My own recommendation for a simple but relatively good White method after 1...e5 would be the so-called Spanish Four Knights (I always just called it the Four Knights).  1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Nc3 Nf6 4.Bb5.  In case of 4...Nd4, 5.Bc4 is the latest thing (Bacrot-Sargissian, Antwerp 2009).  And in case Black plays the "Metger Unpin Variation," White should take a look at Cheparinov-Jakovenko, Jermuk 2009.  These games were treated by Victor respectively in the October and September updates.

This approach has the advantage that it can also be played against the Petroff.

I don't know if the Scotch is really going to be what you're looking for. It's funny that you use the word aggressive, because there were some descrepencies with this word with regards to opening variations in the General Forum under the thread "An Aggressive 1. d4 Repetoire" or something to that tune. If you're looking for attacking lines where you get the initiative, the pure Scotch, especially the main lines, aren't for you. In both the 4...Nf6 5. Nxc6 bxc6 6. e5 and 4...Bc5 6. Nxc6 Qf6 lines, White gives Black a lead in development and activity for structural superiority and some endgame prospects.

I think one problem that crops up here quite a bit is that there are a lot of players who are looking for something "non-theoretical" but "aggressive", and in chess nowadays, that's simply nearly impossible to find. Sure, you might be able to dig up some sidelines that are offbeat and weird and might offer up some nice ideas if Black plays like crap, but otherwise, sharp attacking openings that contain any potential have been analyzed to death! You might play some sidelines or weird gambits for a while until you get sick of people finding the right moves and leaving you with nothing.

That said, if you're looking for something, here are some options, some of which have been stated already, but I'm just repeating them because I agree:

1. The Evans Gambit

2. The Scotch Gambit

3. The Center Game

4. The Bishop's Opening, with the intention of delaying Nf3 and playing for f4 at some point.

Good luck and happy hunting!  Grin

Wow, thankyou for the many and varied responses! Certainly some food for thought.

Have a couple of questions for the team:

How about following Short's repertoire with the Evan's gambit and the Qf3 line vs TKD?

Is the overall consensus now that the gambit is fairly sound for white? I think this gambit certainly leads to some of the types of positions I prefer.

(b) 2. Ne2- many players are confused and will allow a version of KIA that is good for White, or they will play 2...Nc6 against which I play both 3. d4 returning to Scotch and 3. c3!? with a slow buildup.

For someone who likes to play the Scotch, 2.Ne2 is indeed a good choice - 2...Nc6 (best) 3.d4, and it is likely to become a Scotch.

Have played this a little on blitz before, as I used to play the 2. Ne2 Sicilian.  Any general opinions on how the Scotch stands today?  Can it lead to a dynamic game for white based on recent games?

Like you, I prefer to keep things efficient against 1...e5 so that if I need to spend much time on theory it is in the open Sicilian.  I play 1 e4 e5 2 Nc3

Very interesting! I play in this in blitz also.  Might be an alternative way to enter the scotch as well, if I head down that route.

Like you, I prefer to keep things efficient against 1...e5 so that if I need to spend much time on theory it is in the open Sicilian.  I play 1 e4 e5 2 Nc3 with the following breakdown:

2...Nf6 3 f4 I enjoy the Vienna gambit.  If black really knows the line he gets equality but I rarely see anyone play the correct moves.

2...Bb4 3 d4 with an interesting game

2... anything else 3 Nf3 and Scotch 4 knights which is open and though it's considered drawish at high levels there is plenty of action and there are plenty of winning chances for both sides at my level.

So, not much theory above (certainly less than any of the Ruy options) and no Petroff, Latvian, etc.

Hi All,

I'm a 2100 FIDE rated player that seeks your advice on an opening to play for White versus 1.. e5 that isn't too theory intensive but gives good possibilities of tactical complications/attacking chances.

Up until now I have invested alot of time in my Najdorf and KID for black. I'm now at the point where I am comfortable in those openings and have a solid repertoire built.  My White repertoire, however,  is a little wanting - particularly vs. 1.. e5.

Possibilities that I've been considering are:
1. Ruy Lopez with 5. d3 - What I currently play. Seems to avoid alot of the Ruy theory but seems to lead to more closed positions than I enjoy playing in.

2. Ruy Lopez Worral (5. Qe2) - Have bought Andrew Greet's book and skimmed through briefly. Alot of the positions seem appealing and I like its rarity and relative lack of theory.

3. Scotch Game - Used to play this is a Junior to head straight into the Open Games.  Found originally that it lead to very positional struggles, but have seen some dynamism reappearing in recent games.

Any thoughts or alternatives you could share would be most appreciated!

- Huggy

As to option 2 you can also play Qe2 a move later and allow the open and Moller/Archangelsk lines. The lines in the book of Greet have most problems in the Bc5 lines (and the lines with d5) which you avoid that way.

If nothing else works, a total pig-headed unwillingness to look facts in the face will see us through.

Interesting tactical melee in the Ruy López:

1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bb5 a6 4.Ba4 Nf6 5.d4!?

Outrating you by a "highly significant" 50 points, I would make following recommendations:
a) 3. Bc4 and  4. d3- possibility to transpose to superior versions of Ruy Lopez.

(b) 2. Ne2- many players are confused and will allow a version of KIA that is good for White, or they will play 2...Nc6 against which I play both 3. d4 returning to Scotch and 3. c3!? with a slow buildup.

(c) 2. Bc4 Bishop's Opening against which many players will allow a King's Gambit with some options removed.

All of these allow reversion at some point to main lines.
