Presumptuous, baloney.  There is already ample indication that this thread will never stop unless moderation puts a stop to it.  And as I have said, an endless highly charged dispute is not really what this forum is for.  At some point out of decency, we should agree to disagree and move on.  That will never happen in this case, because we have some people who simply refuse to let the subject drop.  Why they want to carry on this debate in a chess forum instead of a forum where they would meet with more knowledgeable replies, I have no idea, but I'm tired of it and I think many others are as well.

I have already understood that your regard for me is slight, by the way, so that it becomes redundant for you to emphasize that in each new post.

I'd like to switch to a different format for our discussion, mainly because I think debating several different points in a single post makes it easy to lose context over a few back-and-forths.  In particular, I raised several points that I think you did not give satisfactory answers to, and I'd like to conclude discussion on those points before we move on.

I'd like to start with the issue of the climate models replicating snowball earth 650 million years ago.  I raised the question of how climate models with a sensitivity of 3+ degrees to a doubling of atmospheric CO2 would have modeled a world covered in ice as 650 million years ago, when CO2 concentration was over 10x of today.

My initial point:

Well, I think calling them clowns or buffoons makes it seem that it's a matter of intelligence. I repeat: It's not a matter of intellect but of personality. These people are just in denial because of some prejudice that they have...as to what that is I don't really know. Could be hatred of "tree huggers" or they've confused concern over climate change with being an Al Gore fan (they're not the same)? Perhaps they don't want to give the common interest/public good prominence over private benefit. Yeah, I think that's it. 

Just to give a couple of small samples without too many annoying quotes:

Somehow serving local constituencies is a bigger problem than that? I'm sorry...something is wrong here.

As for the theRomantic, who claims to be a geologist. Maybe he is...I just find it incredible that he went on and on about the hockey stick graph but his criticisms boil down to nonsense. 

Of course, scientific theories have to have predictive qualities, and again of course, you have to back test predictive models. Climate scientists can and DO backtest their computer models. But to suggest that we ought not to take the fact of global warming seriously because scientists cannot yet predict EXACTLY how fast the ice will melt or how hot it will be in ten summers...oh boy. 


The hockeystick graph is a not a model. Mann's study was the subject that we were discussing. But then you said it was "debunked" (you know, like David Ray Griffin would "debunk" a debunking) while ignoring the fact that his work has been upheld and even further butressed by others. 

Your talk about tree rings and stuff...I mean tree rings is but one tool. A tool which nonetheless was upheld as valid by the National Academy. The Academy paper I linked to suggested methods for improvement. With some caveats they still said:

Gee, what a question by a geologist...The earth is no closed system. It recieves energy from the sun and is affected by meteoric impacts, continental drift etc.  Life evolved since say 3.5 billion years - and thus changed the atmosphere (and so the climate) by photosynthesis to a place we can live, reducing the CO2 content and increasing the O2 content.
How do you want to find an equilibrium in that changing system? Please take into account that it is only some 400 million years since lif began to conquer land...

  • It is a good question but I think I addressed this already.  In reality if the AGW theory were true there is not much that really can be done.  We are Hydrocarbon Man -- with our current technology, without hydrocarbons, only a fraction of our current population could be sustained.  

    This isn't simply a matter of changing lightbulbs, and this is one my main issues with pro-AGW folk -- the sheer delusion as to the nature of the solutions

    Oh look, the word sustained... But how you use it, ist far from sustainable - according to your argumetation we are simply doomed.     Reefs can die, that took place more then once in earth history e.g. at the verge of the devonian to the carbonian. And the major reef builders may come extinct there. Later reefs may recover but then built by other species. The devonian reefs for example were dominated by stromatopores.

    Well first I hope that your tongue isn't hurt. You are not alone here as a geologist. I'm too a member of that guild. And I had palaentology too, fossils. I now have another profession. But then I worked on reefs and reef building species and their environment. Your words on limestone where a bit too casual. I won't go into detail of the building of limestone, reefs are often an inducing factor by cutting of restricted areas with high temperatured backreef environents. But the reef core itself is only a little portion of the total limestone developing that way. As far as I remember then it was still a question how percipitation of CaCO3 exactly takes place - only on physical grounds around other grains or induced by micro algae?
    It's sad but mother nature seems not interested in the opinon you have. Reefs die if the circumstances aren't good enough. The geologic record shows it. It may happen again and those tiny creatures will not care about your saying that a doubling of CO2 content is hardly enough...

    Hi Smyslov_Fan,

    I do believe the temperature has increased by about 0.6 degrees Celsius from 1880 to the present, and I do believe it's likely that increased CO2 produced by humans played a role in this increase.

    I don't believe temperature will rise 3+ degrees Celsius or more if CO2 goes from 380-560ppm, because:

    (1) the current rate of increase suggests less than half of that.

    (2) the models that predict these kinds of numbers assume positive feedbacks amplifying any forcing, which I don't believe.  Rather I believe the climate system is dominated by negative feedbacks (clouds).

    (3) there's very little paleoclimatic data that suggests CO2 is a major driver of climate.

    As to what could make me believe the temperature was going to rise by 3+ degrees in the next 100 years, I feel a bit guilty answering that question because I am pretty sure this evidence doesn't exist, otherwise I wouldn't be a "skeptic", but here goes:  

    (1) I would like paleoclimatic evidence showing CO2 being a major driver of climate over a long period of time.

    (2) Climate models capable of extensive backtesting that demonstrate they can adequately model the Earth's climate systems

    (3) Some explanation as to why the temperature has only increase 0.6 degrees since 1880.

    Finally, I would like take issue with the general meme that the "scientific evidence" completely supports AGW.  In fact I believe this is simply a very successful PR campaign.  As I've said above, if you support mainstream AGW theory, you are not just supporting a rather simple notion that CO2 increases temperature (yes it does, but only around 1 degree Celsius, source IPCC), but you also support the concept of a climate system that amplifies this effect.  It is this aspect in particular which I believe is highly dubious and in fact has not been validated by current temperature trends.

    Those who deny the scientific evidence of global warming, and the much more difficult to prove assessment that humans are responsible have never really answered the following question:

    What would it take for you to believe that a) global warming is occurring and b) that human action is responsible for it?

    1.4 degrees Celsius per doubling of CO2 = 0.6 degrees C observed / log (380ppm CO2/280ppm) base 2.

    Yes, it is possible the Earth's climate system works to amplify any small forcing through the mechanisms you discuss.  In addition, CO2 becomes less soluble in water as temperature increases, so a slight increase in temperature due to CO2 could start a positive feedback loop.

    Alternatively, the Earth's climate system could be primarily dominated by negative feedback mechanisms such as clouds, which may increase the albedo of the Earth and reflect sunlight back into space, in response to a higher temperature. 

    Really, the climate systems are hugely complex, and we don't really know.  However, if the Earth's climate systems are driven by positive feedbacks, it's a good question as to why after 4.5 billion years, it did not find equilibrium in some kind of permanent Ice Age or Green House.

    I would like to emphasize this point, mainly because most "warmers" I have encountered seem to think that the science is all so simple, that everything has been worked out.  

    The reality is that if you subscribe to the mainstream AGW theory, you are NOT just subscribing to the rather simple idea that CO2 is a greenhouse gas, and we are increasing the concentration, therefore temperature will increase.  Even pro-AGW scientists admit the pure greenhouse effect of a doubling of CO2 is only 1 degree Celsius.  In that case, you are subscribing to the idea that Earth's climate system is dominated by positive feedbacks that will serve to amplify this effect.

    That, to me, is not so clear and all, and in light of the evidence we have, over the past 120 years and paleo-climatic evidence, in my view is quite dubious.

  • Even 1.4 degrees is probably much too high simply because the warming prior to 1945 likely had a high solar component.  The temperature increase from 1972-1998 may had cloud reduction and solar components as well. 

    But I would really like to address your point regardless.  If humans can only prosper in a narrow band of approximately 2 degrees Celsius, then the geological record shows we're completely screwed because the climate varies by much more that all by itself, without our intervention.  

    Fortunately I don't share this view, in fact I believe it's little more than fear-mongering actually.  One benefit of increased CO2 would likely be increased plant fertilization which could increase crop yields.

  • It is a good question but I think I addressed this already.  In reality if the AGW theory were true there is not much that really can be done.  We are Hydrocarbon Man -- with our current technology, without hydrocarbons, only a fraction of our current population could be sustained.  

    This isn't simply a matter of changing lightbulbs, and this is one my main issues with pro-AGW folk -- the sheer delusion as to the nature of the solutions.

    Increasing the percentage of carbon in the atmosphere from 0.028% to 0.038% is hardly a geological scale when you consider the earliest atmosphere (4+ billion years ago) was likely majority nitrogen and CO2, and that it's really only the past few hundred million years that  the CO2 concentration dropped below 0.4%.

    Limestone is most often is a chemical sediment that was later compacted. The processes are complex.

    I'm a geologist, so no zoology isn't my thing but I'm trained to know a little about fossils.  I'm not going to argue most of your points, even though I'm biting my tongue a bit, because it's not necessary.

    My casual remark regarding limestone was simply pointing out the rich diversity of marine life that existed for hundreds of millions of years in a period with 10x as much CO2 as now.  
    On that basis alone, I don't share your views on the impending doom of the ocean due to a 2x increase in CO2.

    I havn't recalculated your calculation. But some points came to my mind
    • one cannot look a climate changes on earth as linear processes. Just take the ice shield in the north pole area plus Greenland (which infact recieved it's name from a warming period btw...). If it vanishes, and that can be measured by satellites, you have a double effect. First the area largely reflecting sun radiation back into space (albedo) shrinks. Second the area that absorps the sun radiation (warming up) increases. 
      So the total effect may well be exponential. 
    • only 1.4° C ahh then... Well I take this figure. And I point out that this would also be only the average. The maxima may be much higher from here to there. So even starting from that seemingly meager figure that could have devastating effects on rainfall, wheather, harvest, rising sea level etc.

    We simply have to deal with the impacts our behaviour has especially if we have children...
