Belaji,

If you read the article closely, it supports, rather than challenges the concept of Global Warming.  It shows that more Solar Energy is being trapped than is leaving, and the primary mechanism of this is increased greenhouse gasses.  This article merely addresses the problem of accurately measuring the energy.  It doesn't suggest that there is no extra energy to measure.

So, thank you for providing us with yet more scientific evidence of global warming!

Oh moderator,
I didn't intended to personally attack theRomantic. I wrote that reference concerning drug addiction only to show that mankind behaves like this actually. I had no inclinatition with it to theRomantic. The humans overall seem to be addicted to a highly exagerated life style, driven by carbon fuels. They deny any bad effects of their "carbon drugs" - that's really comparable to normal addiction.

Too the "easy task" concerning the northern ice shield wasn't meant offensive. I took it because it is an undisputable fact, that should be explained by someone who denies climate change.

As said in an earlier post I'm absolutely democratic on that topic. Mankind has to decide it's way. I vote for a change in behavior but I accept if the majority wants to move on the risky way. They will have to explain it to our children.

Btw. Thanx for correcting my grammar. I have allways been bad in grammar.

First off, I, of course, agree with motörhead.

You made two points, to be gracious to your position. You said that tree rings do not correlate to your satisfaction, and that "we've seen only a 0.6 degree c rise"

Your second point also has a lot of unclear stuff about the Earth's albedo. I understand the concept but you don't present things well after that.

Tree Rings:

Let us suppose for sake of argument that you are correct. That would mean that what scientists have  found to be the case  (a relationship between ground and air temperatures) is totally wrong   (http://archives.cnn.com/2000/NATURE/02/17/boreholes.enn/). It would mean that many scientist are wrong, including the National Academy...oh sorry...but let's pretend they're all wrong.

But the problem is theRomantic, hockey sticks have been reproduced using many proxies other than tree rings.

Now as for you other "point" about it being colder than what scientists say it's been, why don't you both provide sources for your .6 degree AND how you came to this conclusion? That way we can have a honest discussion, OK??

theRomantic wrote on 03/09/10 at 09:10:50:

I'd like to start with the issue of the climate models replicating snowball earth 650 million years ago.  I raised the question of how climate models with a sensitivity of 3+ degrees to a doubling of atmospheric CO2 would have modeled a world covered in ice as 650 million years ago, when CO2 concentration was over 10x of today.

My initial point:

Quote:

An example would be 650 million years ago when CO2 concentration was over an order of magnitude higher, yet the Earth was likely covered in ice.

Your response:

Quote:

Oh, no. Don't compare apples with stones.
650 million years ago earth offered a totally different picture. Life was yet in the kindergarten. The phanerozoic evolution of the fauna which is based on the flora took place about 500 to 550 million years ago. Besides it took some further 150 to 200 million years before nature left sea and took foothold on land.
So you cannot compare that early times (where our atmosphere was just evolving) with our days.

I was confused by your response, as nothing you mentioned seemed to have to do with climate PHYSICS, which are what drive the climate models:

Quote:

What does any of that have to do with climate PHYSICS?  The issue is whether a model that predicts 3 degrees of warming per doubling of CO2 could reproduce an Earth covered in ice with over 10x as much CO2.

Your response:

Quote:

Well, the physics of atmosphere has changed since considerably due to it's chemical change. Life entered the stage with all it's impacts. And you ask what that has to do with physics of climate... Gosh. Reflect it again.

Quote:

...that it's really only the past few hundred million years that  the CO2 concentration dropped below 0.4%.

Aah, you got it...

I'm afraid I don't actually.  Why EXACTLY would a climate model, which for all practical purposes, the ENTIRE PURPOSE of which, is to model Earth's climate under different quantities of CO2, be unable to handle this request.

Snowball Earth 650 million years ago... I don't understand, what's the purpose of a comparision between earth now and 650 million years ago.
We have only faint ideas about the situation then. Can you conclude the position of land and water then? What is the basis of your conclusion? palaeomagnetic data or palaeolithologic data? I think the distribution of the continents has a major impact on the physics of climate. That's also very true for the fact, that there were not plants on land yet.
You can't say too much about the atmosphere then. It may well have been quite a dusty one (due to volcanism for example) resembling the nuclear winter theory or the the impact theory. Then the content of CO2 would be of minor importance. Because then there would have been too less sun radiation reaching the surface to induce a greenhouse effect.

You simply try to overstrech climate modeling if you ask those models to explain the snowball scenario. Those models work for the actual time with it's exact distrubition of continents. It may reach back to say 100000 years when the continents had +/- the same positions yet.
The distribution of land is very important, just take a look at the circum antartic current.
So those models are important for today and the looks back into history are only valid if you have some exact data for a comparision, that is for example ice core data, lake sediment data, seasonal rings in trees. It is nearly selfevident that the actual modeling devices aren't able to go too far back.

You refuse any research-based scientific diagnosis related to climate. And your basis for the refusal is "believe" and doubt. The latter one indeed is part of science but doubt alone is nothing at all. You have to underpin it with own data. But you give the fairytale of critical scientists driven out by the bad guys of climate change conspiracy...

Oh no, infact you had one datum: Temperature will rise 1.4° you calculated if atmospheric CO2-content doubles (which alone may cause some undinyable problems) but then you blured that on grounds of ... believe and doubts. Not convincing. Mankind piles up the stored carbon of geological eras via oxidation of fossil fuels in our actual atmosphere and the only feeling you give, ist that this unprecedented process has no important effect. Ridiculous.

Please explain to us why the northern ice shield has vanished  so drastically over the past two decades. This is an undisputed fact. And orthodox scientists always atribute it to climate change. I can't wait to see the very truth presented by you...

I think you missed the point. You were nonspecific about Snowball Earth. So really what you implied, and what anyone would "get" from reading you, is that if CO2 was really that big of a deal then the planet wouldn't have frozen solid. Whether or not I would have worn shorts had I been around is irrelevant. But you can't utilize a theory for your purposes that also relies on CO2's known feedback effects to backup your point. That would be like a creationist trying to use microevolution to refute macroevolution. It's dead on arrival.

No, more generally the point is ANY and EVERY ice age in this period of time is a puzzle of you to explain.  Because you believe the sensitivity to CO2 doubling in concentration is 3 degrees Celsius, you'd expect the Earth to be around 10 degrees warmer than today (around 25 degrees C) just based on CO2.  So every severe glaciation -- or period that you wouldn't have wanted to wear shorts -- is a big question mark for you.  It's not necessary for me to defend the position that the Earth completely froze over to make my point.

But I'm happy to discuss this issue, partly to clarify my position, but mainly because it's just an interesting subject.  I'll start out by pointing out ... yet again ... that I consider it well established that the greenhouse effect of CO2 is about 1 degree Celsius.  The difference between myself and pro-AGW climate scientist would be that a "warmer" basically believes the Earth's climate system works to amplify any small forcing by about a factor of 3 or more.

A key feedback in the climate system is the "albedo" of the earth.  The albedo is a measure of reflectiveness of the Earth.  If the albedo is very high, then it means solar radiation is bouncing off the planet without being absorbed and turned into heat -- a lower albedo means more solar energy is being absorbed by the planet, a higher albedo means less energy is absorbed.  It's not easy to precisely measure the albedo of the Earth, but it's generally estimated at around 0.3 or 30% of solar radiation is just reflected away.  The primary drivers of the albedo are clouds and ice.

So in the case of snowball earth, if we assume the Earth had completely frozen over, the albedo due to ice would be very high.  In fact the albedo would have played a key role in getting to snowball earth apparently, as once the glaciation had passed the tropics, the albedo would have become so high that the global temperature would plummet due to the lack of solar radiation being absorbed as heat.  In order to thaw out the planet then, it would have been necessary to thaw out the tropics.  This could have been done by a period of high tectonic activity/volcanism releasing large amounts of greenhouse gases (including CO2) into the atmosphere, which had probably reached low concentrations due to the low temperature -- meaning the volcanic gases then had much more impact.  As the ice melts and the albedo of the Earth drops, more solar radiation is absorbed, working as a positive feedback.

But WAIT -- I hear you are about to ask -- what is the difference between then and now?  Wouldn't CO2 increase temperature, thus melting the ice, and amplifying the temperature increase?  The big difference would be CLOUDS.  Today, a big contributor to the albedo of the Earth is clouds, which would seem to INCREASE as temperature increases, thereby providing negative feedback.  But on snowball earth, clouds wouldn't play much of a role, because a white cloud covering white ice doesn't reflect 2x as much energy, and due to the lack of water vapour in the atmosphere.

OK, let's be clear and go through the steps:

...

4) The National Academy backs him up and mentions others who reach similar conclusions. They also validate proxy indicators.

5) theRomantic says that the hockey stick has been "debunked."

I leave it to the open-minded readers to draw their own conclusions here, but I will add that you, theRomantic, can't accuse me of appealing to authority because debunking implies someone (according to you)  debunked the hockey stick. Ergo, an authority had to debunk it. And in fact, Science does not rely on logic but rather on EXPERIENCE. If others replicate results, then conclusions are on firm ground, etc...

Giving credit where credit was due, that was certainly an artful misdirection.  If someone had just been reading the thread casually, they might totally believe I was the one who was appealing to authority and arguing against empiricism.

So just to make the record clear, I did not appeal to the authority of anyone.  Nor does the definition of the word "debunk" imply the neccesity of any "authority" whatsoever -- this is just your strawman.  I made a very specific point that the key rings -- a key temperature proxy used in these kind of reconstructions -- have a correlation closer to -1.0 than +1.0 with temperature since 1960.  I mentioned that I think that raises the key question, of whether the tree rings are a good temperature proxy at all -- as you say, science is based on EXPERIENCE after all.

To that, your response was to appeal to the authority of the NAS.  I asked you what exactly you thought the significance of the position of the NAS was on this issue, to which you gave the dubious response above, accusing me of appealing to authority.

So, since you didn't answer my question, and so I can be clear on this issue and not have to misrepresent your position as you have mine several times now -- what exactly do you think the significance of the position of the NAS is here,  or on the subject of AGW more generally?

To that I'll just add, with regard to your statement that "Science does not rely on logic but rather on EXPERIENCE", how do you reconcile such a statement with the reality that while climate models -- which are based on logical models of how the climate works -- predict a temperature sensitivity of 3 degrees C per CO2 doubling, while we've only seen a 0.6 degree C rise as a result of 44% of a CO2 doubling (a rate of less than 1.4 degrees C)?  And that we've also seen increased solar activity in this time frame?

You haven't made any. Your "points" are that whatever I use as a reference doesn't count. You also have no explanation for the warming. Now, if you'll cooley go through the data, show exactly how we're not warming, how Mann's math is wrong, why looking at ice core's ( and other kinds of sea samples) doesn't yield anything...then you might have points. As a laymen who is a fan of science and reason, I find your posts rather anti-scientific.

I don't blame you for imagining I haven't made any points, considering it seems you've barely even read any posts.  After all, you're a Climate Fundamentalist, so you're not interested in reading any opposing views.   Grin

So, to give you the quick rundown, the temperature has risen by 0.6 degrees since 1880, which is not consistent with a 3+ degree increase due to global warming, Mann's work is addressed in part above (although's there's more!), and as for the ice cores, well I thought you'd never ask!  The ice cores clearly show that there is a roughly a 800 year lag between temperature and CO2.  That is to say, temperature increases/decreases FIRST, and then some time later, CO2 begins to increase/decrease as well, in general.  This and the in general close relationship between temperature and CO2 is explained by a fairly simple property really -- the solubility of CO2 in water is lower as temperature increases.  So when temperature increases, the oceans release CO2, and when they cool, they absorb CO2.  Hence the close correlation.

But don't worry. You're just a skeptic, so no one will ask you to explain how all the ice melted, or if the current warming is similar to the medieval warming period then what (if not greenhouse gas) is driving the warmth. It's not necessary to provide an alternate expanation. Roll Eyes

And water vapor isn't it.

Quote:
Before I respond in more detail, since you've appealed to the authority of the National Academy of Sciences a few times now

OK, let's be clear and go through the steps:

1) Skeptics say that that the MWP indicates that current warming is either cyclical or consistent with natural phenomena.

2) Mann and company say that current warming isn't natural/normal,  based on their conclusion that the warming was not as extensive as it is today.

3) Skeptics say his math is off, he can't use tree rings, and his approach is hocus pocus.

4) The National Academy backs him up and mentions others who reach similar conclusions. They also validate proxy indicators.

5) theRomantic says that the hockey stick has been "debunked."

And by the way, what you exhale in CO2 is either a part of the atmosphere already, or the result of what you ate broken down into energy at the cellular level - in other words what was already there to begin with as part of a natural carbon cycle. This is as opposed to gathering and releasing tons from fossil fuels that have been locked inside the Earth for ages. CLOSED LOOP.

Are you seriously taking issue with the statement "we all emit CO2 after all".  FYI the carbon stored in the bodies of plants and animals doesn't add to the atmospheric greenhouse effect.

Quote:
ignore the fact that Snowball Earth is still a controversial theory (much more than AGW),

My issue is with the ability of current climate models to handle severe Ice Ages in periods of very high CO2.  While there certainly is some debate about the extent of glaciation in this time period -- whether it extended into the tropics or not -- it's not too controversial that you probably would have wanted to wear a jacket in this time period, in most parts of the world.

Alternatively the Ordovician ice age could be used as an example, so I don't need to argue snowball earth to make my point.

I can't help to add that I wouldn't agree at all with the statement that snowball earth is "much more controversial" than AGW, by any definition of the word.  There's obviously quite much more of a controversy surrounding AGW currently due its political implications, and snowball earth at least is not being invalidated by the current temperature trend.

Quote:
and that according to said theory the Earth defrosted precisely because of high CO2 levels, and still call yourself a scientist??

Not "precisely" actually, all greenhouse gasses (water vapour, CO2, methane, etc.) would contribute to the greenhouse effect.  I've already made clear on this thread that I consider it well established that the greenhouse effect of CO2 should be around 1 degree Celsius per doubling of CO2, so there's nothing inconsistent with my views here.

Quote:
So maybe you ought to start a movement against the heresy of the National Academy of Science instead of pestering us.

Quote:
And while I'm on the subject of arguments, how is that you can ignore the gold seal of science in the United States (support from the National Academy),

Before I respond in more detail, since you've appealed to the authority of the National Academy of Sciences a few times now, why don't you elaborate on what exactly is the significance of the position of the NAS?  You've brought up "skeptics" ignoring all of the "scientific evidence" a few times now, but in response to my points, you've simply appealed to the NAS. This seems to be the core of your argument, so it's worth exploring.

"Imo their are bigger problems ..." which I took to mean that you acknowledge crony (or corporatist) capitalism at least as a secondary problem. After all, you can't deny reality. Corporations push Congress around and use lobbyists to run the US government.

I guess, I mis-wrote (?) when I said that. I just can't believe that someone would fail to admit that, even when well documented. That's why I mentioned the Timothy Carney book. I mean, you admit that's the case? Don't you??

Nice one though. Quick, scan everything I've written to find something you can pick off!!  Cheesy

No not really, it is just when people say I said something. It is difficult enough to get your point across to a total stranger, so when my point is misrepresented I just react on that.

I agree with Markovich on the merits of global warming, but disagree completely with his notion of what this forum is designed for.  This section is called the "chit chat" section and it is designed as a place where chess players can discuss anything that is off-topic in the chess sections.

That is its design! Markovich's argument, such as it is, is that the Chess Pub shouldn't have a chit chat section. No, this isn't reductio ad absurdum , this is his actual stance.

Markovich's  opinion is important because he is a fellow moderator.  But his vision of the chess pub forum is at odds with the design and function of the site.

I have read the requests to kill this thread, and have seriously considered the options.  This thread is among the most popular threads here, and when the bounds of decorum have been crossed, I have deleted or edited those posts.  This thread will continue as long as the members of the ChessPub use it appropriately.

This has nothing, absolutely nothing to do with my personal feelings on global warming. My decision to keep this thread alive is based on the fact that there is legitimate conversation continuing here.

The topic is covered in every major newspaper, including the New York Times, The Economist, Le Monde, and probably Der Spiegel.  It is perfectly legitimate for members of the Chess Pub to share their views with each other here.

Well we disagree, but I respect you, so I will abate my criticism for the time being.  I am NOT the only one who is seriously annoyed by the interminability of this, please note.  And I think there really should be a limit to how much anything gets discussed in Chit Chat, particularly when some parties give evidence of never being willing to leave off.

...There is already ample indication that this thread will never stop unless moderation puts a stop to it.  And as I have said, an endless highly charged dispute is not really what this forum is for.

... Why they want to carry on this debate in a chess forum instead of a forum where they would meet with more knowledgeable replies, I have no idea, but I'm tired of it and I think many others are as well.
