I don't know, but I think that whatever is decided here should be put into a leather-bound report, with appendices, and presented to the U.N.  Honestly, they'll stop handing out Ph.D.'s in climatology, meteorology and whatnot, once they see what deep insights we've gained here based on our chess expertise alone.

I think that Smyslov_Fan should be the one to present it, given that it's his tolerance for everyone's rambling on at interminable length and posting large graphics of dubious provenance that led to the profound conclusions we've been able to reach. Many less insightful people would have considered this thread an annoyance and a complete waste of bandwidth, not to mention a distraction to everyone's attention.  But no, with selfless devotion to the proposition that seeming fools should be allowed constantly to post to chesspub about their pet scientific theories, he persevered, and look at what we have to show for it!  Humanity truly owes him its gratitude.

The next thing I think we should tackle is a fully unified theory of time, matter and energy.  We should have that finished up by this time next year, and then what?  The existence of God?  The nature of right and wrong?  Or perhaps, whether it is possible to communicate with the spirits of the dead?  I merely propose, it's for self-taught scientific geniuses like belaji to decide.

It was, after all, belaji who posted that most critical of questions, "Where are the joules?"  My question is: "Where are the Higgs bosons?"

Here's a thought. We are currently in an interglacial. Let's say the world comes together and reduces human contribution of CO2 radically and we get kind of closely back onto the "natural cycle" of natural temperature fluctuations. We are due for a glaciation. If natural causes start to drive the world cold again, what then?

In the end of Spring 2009, I knew next to nothing about global warming.
Although sympathetic to the skeptics (just my personality), I knew I knew nothing.
After some Net research I came up with this sketch of the situation on Jul 28th, 2009:
Quote:

2000-2020 was an expected period of cold oceanic currents.
Just like 1980-2000 was mostly hot currents (El Nino etc.)
That explains both the current "at least flatness" and the previous very fast rise.
Now subsume the periodic oceanic factor. A net rise remains,
clearly seen on the graph you submitted at the end of page 7.
In other words, the 80-00 increase was faster than the current "decrease".
After 2020 we'll hit new records.

("Solar flares" thread page 9.)

Now I read this in the Guardian article:
Quote:

The research said that natural fluctuations in ocean temperature could have a bigger impact on global temperature than expected. In particular, the study concluded that cooling in the oceans could offset global warming, with the average temperature over the decades 2000-2010 and 2005-2015 predicted to be no higher than the average for 1994-2004. Despite clarifications from the scientists at the time, who stressed that the research did not challenge the predicted long-term warming trend, the study was widely misreported as signalling a switch from global warming to global cooling.
(...)
"The natural variation occurs side by side with the manmade warming. Sometimes it has a cooling effect and can offset this warming and other times it can accelerate it."
(...)
Latif said his research suggested that up to half the warming seen over the 20th century was down to this natural ocean effect, but said that was consistent with the 2007 report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. "No climate specialist would ever say that 100% of the warming we have seen is down to greenhouse gas emissions."

Now you may say I figure things out quickly, but some people should start to get it by now.

More re Mojib Latif and that Daily Mail article that was picked up by Fox News and WattsUpWithThat.  Latif has been reacting to this kind of thing for months.

The big problem of "Global Warming" is that it seems to over shadow other more pressing environmental issues.

Pollution in its many shapes is the main problem in my opinion, the oceans are becoming a plastic soup all over the world (as plastic disintegrates much easier than we think, and has been accumulating in the water over the last 50 years). One consequence is that many different species are mistaking the plastic for food and ends up killing their offspring with it.

Here is an interesting question in my mind: in general, is a cold climate better or worse than a warm climate?

Recently, the northern hemisphere has been hit hard with devastating cold!

Yes.
Bring on global warming - fast!

Tut, you should try living in North America.

There is so much we do not know yet. Here is a scientist with yet another (peer reviewed) theory! CFCs and cosmic rays.

Is the science really settled?

Al Gore's role in the global warming debate is way overstated. He commands a lot of attention because of his stature and visibility. But he is hardly the centre or the pivotal driver of the global warming consensus.

The last  couple of comments on China are interesting and revealing. They illustrate perfectly the mistrust and divide between Westerners and China and the developing world. As long as each side clings to its largely uninformed assumptions about the other side, international cooperation will remain elusive

Statistics tend to prove there is a global warming. OK, so what?
Is this all that bad?
I mean, we are now only hearing of the nefast consequences of the warming. But aren't there any advantages to this? Couldn't we try to use this warming to make our planet a better place to live (at least on the dry parts of it).
Else, everyone says now Copenhague is a terrible failure. Was this result not expected?
They have only talked about CO2-emissions. As far as I konw, these emissions are not the most important factor in the global warning. So, no agreement on it does not mean that the result is a failure.
What well could called a failure is that:
- no one spoke about the water reserves
- no one spoke about the other sources of warming
- no one spoke about how to go further within 20/50 years when there won't be any oil/gas on earth...
Shouldn't we start with this?

Personally I feel that the entire energy debate has been hijacked by Al Gore et al. There are far more important reasons (not to mention easier to prove Wink) to invest/research other sources of energy. Fossil fuels are not limitless and their extraction is getting more and more problematic.

PS it is hard to not laugh about global warming, when the last couple of days I am kinda snowed in. Wink

If nothing else works, a total pig-headed unwillingness to look facts in the face will see us through.
