In the end of Spring 2009, I knew next to nothing about global warming.
Although sympathetic to the skeptics (just my personality), I knew I knew nothing.
After some Net research I came up with this sketch of the situation on Jul 28th, 2009:

2000-2020 was an expected period of cold oceanic currents.
Just like 1980-2000 was mostly hot currents (El Nino etc.)
That explains both the current "at least flatness" and the previous very fast rise.
Now subsume the periodic oceanic factor. A net rise remains,
clearly seen on the graph you submitted at the end of page 7.
In other words, the 80-00 increase was faster than the current "decrease".
After 2020 we'll hit new records.

Now I read this in the Guardian article:

"No climate specialist would ever say that 100% of the warming we have seen is down to greenhouse gas emissions."
Now you may say I figure things out quickly, but
some people should start to get it by now.
