Unfortunately 9...Nc6 doesn't seem to work.

1.d4 f5 2.Nf3 Nf6 3.g3 e6 4.Bg2 Be7 5.0-0 0-0 6.c4 d6 7.Nc3 a5 8.Re1 Ne4 9.Qd3 Nc6 10.Ne4 Nb4 11.Qb1 (this position can also arise from 9.Qc2 Nc6 10.Ne4 Nb4 11.Qb1) 11...fe4 12.Qe4 e5 13.de5 (the main move is 13.g4) 13...Bf5 14.Qb7 Rb8 15.Qa7 Nc2 (15...c5 is Black's main move in practice but 16.ed6 Bd6 17.Ng5 looks close to winning) and now the computer novelty 16.Nd4 looks very strong. For example, 16...Nxe1 17.Nc6 Qe8 18.Bd5 Kh8 19.Qc7 Nc2 20.Nb8 Na1 21.Nc6 Bd7 22.Ne7 Qe7 23.Qd6 Qd6 24.ed6 looks winning for White with the five pawns and two bishops clearly dominating the rook, bishop and knight.

9...d5 looks like it should be better for White, but I don't see how exactly. In practice 10.Ne5 c6 11.f3 Nc3 12.bc3 Nd7 has worked out fine for Black, and 10...b6 is an interesting alternative.

Arrg sorry, I meant of course to write '7...a5', not '7...a4'. I can't modify my earlier post now, so please take this by way of apology, because I made the 'a4' error a few times in that post. Stupid brain!

You take the pawn but the position becomes quite messy, e.g.:
9. Qd3 Nc6 10. Nxe4 Nb4 11. Qb1 fxe4 12. Qxe4 e5 13. dxe5 Bf5 14. Qxb7 Rb8 15. Qa7 Nc2 with a mess..

9. Qd3 d5 could be an option, but I did not much like the pawn on ...a5, as it is not your usual Stonewall stuff. Could be playable though..

Now back to the original question:
9. Qd3 NxNc3 10. bxNc3 Nc6 11. e4 e5 12. dxe5 dxe5 13. Qd5+ Kh8, well I was not minding giving up a pawn for active play, as I was counting on keeping the Queens on & getting the Bishop pair to work. But now I have analysed it a bit I see that the Queen swap is almost a necessity due to 14. exf5 Bxf5 15. Nxe5 NxNe5 (almost mandatory) 16. RxNe5 threatening the Bf5, Be7 and a back rank mate on e8 in some variations! Thus, the best I came to was:
16. ... QxQd5 (16. ... c6 17. QxQd8 wins) 17. cxQd5 Bd6, which is not something you necessarily want as Black.

Anyway, have not done any serious analysis, just tried a few active lines for Black.. any ideas are welcome from me as well.

9...Nxc3 is not forced. 9...d5 and especially 9...Nc6 10.Nxe4 Nb4 look like good alternatives.

Thanks for your interesting suggestions.

9...Nxc3 is the move given by Williams on the DVD, so it's worth noting that we're moving outside the Killer Dutch repertoire with your suggestions: that's no reason to dismiss them though. Perhaps we can 'patch' the Williams repertoire.

9...d5 strikes me as not a bad move, but it produces a stonewall dutch pawn structure and a hole on the e5 square. I guess if people know their stonewall dutch it could be an idea worth trying; trouble is, it's very different from the classical dutch ideas on the DVD, which are based on striving for an e5 break followed by attacking the kingside.

9...Nc6 actually looks much worse than 9...d5 to me. Can't White just retreat the Q to b1, then pick up a pawn? For example after 10.Nxe4 Nb4 11.Qb1 fe 12.Qxe4. I can't see what Black has for the pawn here.

To correct the typo: he means 10. bxNc3 (took me some time to figure out what he was referring to with Qd5+! Smiley)

Anyway, I like TN's 2nd suggestion, but frankly I do not see the problem with Black's position after 13. Qd5+ Kh8. It could be that I am still asleep, but can you please enlighten me?  Huh

Yes, sorry I forgot to correct White's 10th move, which is bxc3. I just cut and pasted that string of moves from the Ginger GM website without editing them.

Now to your question about the position after 13...Kh8, which I'll diagram here:

To me this looks like a nightmare for Black. White has the move and has excellent activity in his Qd5; exchanging Q's by Black would give White a lovely advanced protected pawn in the center. Further, White has strong pressure against the e5 pawn, which will most likely fall after, for example, 14.ef Bxf5 15.Nxe5, adding a material disadvantage to Black's less active position. I think White has all the chances here.

When I first got the 'Killer Dutch' DVD, I was very impressed.

I loved the production, Williams is a great presenter, and the opening itself felt like a punchy, fun line.

I adopted the 'Old faithful' line 7...a4 - the core of the DVD -which Williams claims to have played for 20 years.

But then I saw that, on Williams's own website, someone posted on his forum a move sequence which showed a huge crack in the very main line that Williams advocates. Even Williams had to agree that this was 'well spotted' (quote) and went on to confess that he now plays the different move 7...Ne4 for this very reason. Williams also said that he would address this issue in his ebook on the Dutch - but that's been a long time coming and I'm still waiting.

I was very disappointed in this development. I find it hard to believe that Williams did not know about this line despite playing the 'Old faithful' for twenty years.

All the posts I'm talking about are still avaliable on his website, the thread is called 'Killer Dutch mainline' in his forum.

Therefore, before you go embracing the Killer Dutch, be warned. The mainline of 7...a4 leads straight to a lost game.

If anyone has any suggestions for bettering Blacks play in this line, I'd love to hear them - I really did like the 7...a4 Dutch.

[Edit]: To save people going to Williams's forum I've cut and pasted the post below. Note that it's as originally posted, typos and all.

"Hi Simon,
I'm studying your video, I have seen it already a few times to understand the basic idea, and now I'm getting a bit more in details.
I have a question on a line you suggest in the DVD and that seems wrong to me

1 d4 f5
2 Nf3 e6
3 g3 Nf6
4 Bg2 Be7
5 00-00
6 c4 d6
7 Nc3 a5
8 Re1 Ne4 (the old main line)
9 Qd3 Nxc3
10 bxc3 Nc6 (to meet e4 with e5
11 e4 e5
you analysis stops here, but if you go further a couple of moves... White seems much better to me

e.g.
12 dxe5 dxe5 (according to Fritz is the best)
13 Qd5+

Now I'm not even a class A player, so I could be very wrong but I think here white is better !?
Am I wrong?"

[Edit]: To avoid confusion I've changed a typing mistake on White's tenth move, which originally read 'Nxc3' when clearly bxc3 was meant.

I have started myself to casually watch this DVD - thought it would be easier to be exposed to this studying format.

Must say it is very easy to follow. I also like William's aggressive chess and his honesty (as already mentioned above). My little daughter also likes it (dances to the music in the chapter breaks!).

On a personal note, I have experience with the Stonewall and the Leningrad and was a complete newcomer to the Classical (so don't ask me about the lines recommended - I am not qualified to answer!). But I find it very easy to guess and also comprehend the ideas presented. It seems to me that knowing all 3 Dutch variants is very good for developing one's favourite Dutch variant (may be also good if you play the KID!). And the Bird I suppose (but never tried that myself).

A very good effort! (and the service was also good)  Smiley

There's a lot to watch. I've been watching it over the last few days, and I've still got a ways to go. It's interesting stuff and makes me want to take up playing The Bird again.

I've seen the whole DVD by now and must say:"really fantastic!".
An incredible amount of fresh and stunning ideas.
Especially the 2.Bg5 line which was also covered by Simon in "the Dutch- Dangerous weapons" book.

Not at all.  I was just amused to see a quick shot I took on my mobile phone turning up all this time later.
