I didn't like the e+ app when using on my iphone, but it looks good on the iPad. Really comes into its own in the wider environment. Good space for pages on left and board on right.

Williams' book - updated, fun!

Anyone else have experience with e+ app on iphone?

Like myself. As White I always have a lot of problems if I try a KB fianchetto. Or even a double fianchetto. Now I play e3+Bd3+f3 systems aiming for well-timed e4 and my life is easy against IZ dutchies.

Dutch and Grünfeld have never been taken seriously in my opening preparation  Sad

My understanding is that it will be a pdf available from his website. At least to begin with, perhaps published as a physical book at a later date. That's what he wrote on his blog.

I don't know that.

Guys, is there any new source of classical dutch? I mean Williams dvd is outdated a bit, he didn't mention Avrukh line which is (I think) promising for white.

Yes, congratulations to Mr Williams. He did what Anand failed to do, taking Gelfand out of his comfort zone where he could used his route super knowledge.

A great result - Gelfand clearly not used to that sort of chess Wink

Actually some of the other games in that match were so horribly one sided that Simon did rather well to stay concentrated on his game.

Wasn't "I no longer play the old faithful?"  (a5 I think is old faithful - he now prefers Ne4).

I really enjoyed this DVD up until the point where he says "... and this line is why I no longer play the Dutch.

What the...?

I stopped watching and put the DVD away. I don't remember, at this point, which line he was talking about.

The e-book that consumers of 'The Killer Dutch' were promised - seemingly an age ago - is still nowhere in sight and one wonders if Williams has missed the boat given that 7... Ne4 is the focus of the recent Andrew Martin DVD 'The ABC of the classical dutch'.

Still, I was under the impression from a year or two back that 7...Ne4?! 8.Nxe4! was just good for White.  Nothing on Williams' DVD convinced me otherwise; if I remember correctly, he advocated some obscure pawn sac that looked much more like White being up a clear pawn than Black having any kind of compensation to me.

Martin spreads his analysis of 8. Nxe4 over two games: Pinter-Trang 2010 and Lock-Williams 2011. Ironically but unsurprisingly, Williams's games feature quite heavily on the DVD.

I don't want to repeat big chunks of Martin's analysis here - after all, he makes a living from selling this stuff - but I will  say that he claims that the line simply leads to unclear play, with Black having a decent game.

He also says that after [7...Ne4 8.Nxe4 fxe4 9.Ne1 d5 10.f3] he can't see what's wrong with 10...exf3, although he doesn't analyse this move, instead sticking to 10...dxc4.

Williams does offer a couple of his own games with 7...Ne4 from the French league as videos on his blog. The new way for Black did look rather interesting when I looked at them at the beginning of the year.

Personally, I stopped playing the Iljin due to White's ubiquitous and solid Qc2 set-up. Two draws in two long games vs roughly my own rating isn't all that bad, but imo there are other main systems in the Dutch that offer more interesting play.

There's some good stuff on his blog.  9...d5 might be playable as it tries to make the Rook on e1 and Queen on d3 misplaced, but I suspect White can still manage a += Stonewall type position here.  I'll take a look at this stuff later.

The one suboptimal piece in Black's position in this Stonewall is Be7 (compared to the Modern Stonewall, at least). ...a5 is not a bad move to have in, whether Black plays for ...b6, ...Ba6 or just uses the pawn to slow White down on the queenside.

I would like to investigate this a bit myself, surely Black's position must be playable and "refutation" is too strong a word? IIRC Williams mentioned 9...d5 way back in "Play the Classical Dutch", so he's certainly aware of it.

I'm even thinking of playing 9...d5 against 9.Qc2 (in the same line) since I'm not entirely happy with the current main line there for Black. Though Qc2 likely less of a concession than Qd3 for White in a Stonewall structure.

I'm bumping this thread to point out that Williams has updated part of his DVD on his blog: http://www.gingergm.com/2012/07/30/refutation-of-the-the-old-faithful/

He gives some of the lines discussed in this thread, and his conclusions are similar but the analysis is much more detailed.

Looks like a reasonable Stonewall to me. Two of Naumkin's games seem to suggest the plan with Ne5 and f3 mightn't be too fearsome, but what else? I find it hard to believe White can organise b2-b4 advantageously. (Engines tend just to stodge around, which doesn't look too impressive either!) I wonder whether at root Williams mightn't have rejected this not because it's objectively bad, but because it doesn't suit his style.

Thanks, Atticus. This is a very brief exchange though, and it wouldn't surprise me if the line/reason I gave is stated somewhere else, probably by someone other than Williams. Can't remember where I might have seen it -- in some ChessPub stuff, perhaps?

Forgive my ignorance, and for going slightly off-topic, but can someone enlighten me? I was under the impression that what had put Williams off 7 ...a5 had been [b]8 b3 [/b]Ne4 9 Bb2 Nc3 10 Bc3 Qe8 11 Ne1. Am I wrong? And if I'm not, is there in any case anything badly wrong with [8 b3] Na6 9 Bb2 Qe8? -- if so I wasn't aware of it.

Unfortunately 9...Nc6 doesn't seem to work.

1.d4 f5 2.Nf3 Nf6 3.g3 e6 4.Bg2 Be7 5.0-0 0-0 6.c4 d6 7.Nc3 a5 8.Re1 Ne4 9.Qd3 Nc6 10.Ne4 Nb4 11.Qb1 (this position can also arise from 9.Qc2 Nc6 10.Ne4 Nb4 11.Qb1) 11...fe4 12.Qe4 e5 13.de5 (the main move is 13.g4) 13...Bf5 14.Qb7 Rb8 15.Qa7 Nc2 (15...c5 is Black's main move in practice but 16.ed6 Bd6 17.Ng5 looks close to winning) and now the computer novelty 16.Nd4 looks very strong. For example, 16...Nxe1 17.Nc6 Qe8 18.Bd5 Kh8 19.Qc7 Nc2 20.Nb8 Na1 21.Nc6 Bd7 22.Ne7 Qe7 23.Qd6 Qd6 24.ed6 looks winning for White with the five pawns and two bishops clearly dominating the rook, bishop and knight.

9...d5 looks like it should be better for White, but I don't see how exactly. In practice 10.Ne5 c6 11.f3 Nc3 12.bc3 Nd7 has worked out fine for Black, and 10...b6 is an interesting alternative.

Arrg sorry, I meant of course to write '7...a5', not '7...a4'. I can't modify my earlier post now, so please take this by way of apology, because I made the 'a4' error a few times in that post. Stupid brain!

You take the pawn but the position becomes quite messy, e.g.:
9. Qd3 Nc6 10. Nxe4 Nb4 11. Qb1 fxe4 12. Qxe4 e5 13. dxe5 Bf5 14. Qxb7 Rb8 15. Qa7 Nc2 with a mess..

9. Qd3 d5 could be an option, but I did not much like the pawn on ...a5, as it is not your usual Stonewall stuff. Could be playable though..

Now back to the original question:
9. Qd3 NxNc3 10. bxNc3 Nc6 11. e4 e5 12. dxe5 dxe5 13. Qd5+ Kh8, well I was not minding giving up a pawn for active play, as I was counting on keeping the Queens on & getting the Bishop pair to work. But now I have analysed it a bit I see that the Queen swap is almost a necessity due to 14. exf5 Bxf5 15. Nxe5 NxNe5 (almost mandatory) 16. RxNe5 threatening the Bf5, Be7 and a back rank mate on e8 in some variations! Thus, the best I came to was:
16. ... QxQd5 (16. ... c6 17. QxQd8 wins) 17. cxQd5 Bd6, which is not something you necessarily want as Black.

Anyway, have not done any serious analysis, just tried a few active lines for Black.. any ideas are welcome from me as well.

Thanks for your interesting suggestions.

9...Nxc3 is the move given by Williams on the DVD, so it's worth noting that we're moving outside the Killer Dutch repertoire with your suggestions: that's no reason to dismiss them though. Perhaps we can 'patch' the Williams repertoire.

9...d5 strikes me as not a bad move, but it produces a stonewall dutch pawn structure and a hole on the e5 square. I guess if people know their stonewall dutch it could be an idea worth trying; trouble is, it's very different from the classical dutch ideas on the DVD, which are based on striving for an e5 break followed by attacking the kingside.

9...Nc6 actually looks much worse than 9...d5 to me. Can't White just retreat the Q to b1, then pick up a pawn? For example after 10.Nxe4 Nb4 11.Qb1 fe 12.Qxe4. I can't see what Black has for the pawn here.

Yes, sorry I forgot to correct White's 10th move, which is bxc3. I just cut and pasted that string of moves from the Ginger GM website without editing them.

Now to your question about the position after 13...Kh8, which I'll diagram here:

To me this looks like a nightmare for Black. White has the move and has excellent activity in his Qd5; exchanging Q's by Black would give White a lovely advanced protected pawn in the center. Further, White has strong pressure against the e5 pawn, which will most likely fall after, for example, 14.ef Bxf5 15.Nxe5, adding a material disadvantage to Black's less active position. I think White has all the chances here.

When I first got the 'Killer Dutch' DVD, I was very impressed.

I loved the production, Williams is a great presenter, and the opening itself felt like a punchy, fun line.

I adopted the 'Old faithful' line 7...a4 - the core of the DVD -which Williams claims to have played for 20 years.

But then I saw that, on Williams's own website, someone posted on his forum a move sequence which showed a huge crack in the very main line that Williams advocates. Even Williams had to agree that this was 'well spotted' (quote) and went on to confess that he now plays the different move 7...Ne4 for this very reason. Williams also said that he would address this issue in his ebook on the Dutch - but that's been a long time coming and I'm still waiting.

I was very disappointed in this development. I find it hard to believe that Williams did not know about this line despite playing the 'Old faithful' for twenty years.

All the posts I'm talking about are still avaliable on his website, the thread is called 'Killer Dutch mainline' in his forum.

Therefore, before you go embracing the Killer Dutch, be warned. The mainline of 7...a4 leads straight to a lost game.

If anyone has any suggestions for bettering Blacks play in this line, I'd love to hear them - I really did like the 7...a4 Dutch.

[Edit]: To save people going to Williams's forum I've cut and pasted the post below. Note that it's as originally posted, typos and all.

"Hi Simon,
I'm studying your video, I have seen it already a few times to understand the basic idea, and now I'm getting a bit more in details.
I have a question on a line you suggest in the DVD and that seems wrong to me

1 d4 f5
2 Nf3 e6
3 g3 Nf6
4 Bg2 Be7
5 00-00
6 c4 d6
7 Nc3 a5
8 Re1 Ne4 (the old main line)
9 Qd3 Nxc3
10 bxc3 Nc6 (to meet e4 with e5
11 e4 e5
you analysis stops here, but if you go further a couple of moves... White seems much better to me

e.g.
12 dxe5 dxe5 (according to Fritz is the best)
13 Qd5+

Now I'm not even a class A player, so I could be very wrong but I think here white is better !?
Am I wrong?"

[Edit]: To avoid confusion I've changed a typing mistake on White's tenth move, which originally read 'Nxc3' when clearly bxc3 was meant.

I have started myself to casually watch this DVD - thought it would be easier to be exposed to this studying format.

Must say it is very easy to follow. I also like William's aggressive chess and his honesty (as already mentioned above). My little daughter also likes it (dances to the music in the chapter breaks!).

On a personal note, I have experience with the Stonewall and the Leningrad and was a complete newcomer to the Classical (so don't ask me about the lines recommended - I am not qualified to answer!). But I find it very easy to guess and also comprehend the ideas presented. It seems to me that knowing all 3 Dutch variants is very good for developing one's favourite Dutch variant (may be also good if you play the KID!). And the Bird I suppose (but never tried that myself).

A very good effort! (and the service was also good)  Smiley

There's a lot to watch. I've been watching it over the last few days, and I've still got a ways to go. It's interesting stuff and makes me want to take up playing The Bird again.

I've seen the whole DVD by now and must say:"really fantastic!".
An incredible amount of fresh and stunning ideas.
Especially the 2.Bg5 line which was also covered by Simon in "the Dutch- Dangerous weapons" book.

This DVD made me decide to stop playing the Classical with Black but it gave me some excellent ideas to use as White! Overall this DVD is very good but i was expecting more improvements over Williams' book. I like the style of presentation and the structure of the DVD and also the honesty of Williams. Also some secondary lines are covered well. I liked it but it didn't inspire me to tell you the truth to make Classical again one of my weapons. But this is just my personal opinion. I will keep an eye over Williams next DVDs and hope they'll have the same quality as this one.

Hi all,

In reply to ChessStar; The highest player I have ever beaten in the Classical Dutch was Ivan Sokolov, I think that he was 2685 at the time. That was in the main line, 7...Ne4, he played the very passive 8 Bd2.

That just shows that even top Grandmaster's are not sure how to react.
I also got a very good position against Shirov in the same line when he played a bad variation, but I threw that game away (I let Shirov sacrifice, not a good idea! Wink)

Thanks for your responses to the DVD, they have all been very positive at the moment. We are planning to do the next one very soon. I will release the title at a later date.

We received the US copy yesterday and have sent it off to be replicated in the US, so it should be ready to buy soon.

Hi All

OK I have finally gone through the DVD. Just over 6.5 hours!

You will know the contents from earlier posts.

I have played Simon over the board and lost! He is a nice guy but over the board he plays very aggresive chess. This comes accross in the DVD. I would say that players taking up the Dutch or thinking of doing so would do no better than getting this excellent DVD The Dutch is a very risky opening which ever variation you adopt but these days if you want to try and win with Black you need an opening which tries to unbalance the position and in doing so you play risky chess and your chances of losing are greater. Still you can't have everything!

My advice is go and get it. It's real vale for money.

I hopeSimon does another DVD soon.

Akita

Simon, I have a question. Who is the strongest player that you've beaten with the Classical Dutch? I know that I can look this up using various databases etc. etc. but not all the games are published.

Someone started the thread. The author replies.
This is to be welcomed I feel. Sure many here appreciate the chance to engage with the GM author on this topic.

Ridiculous to suggest deleting. Think markovich was mistaken as he may have thought Simon W started the thread to advertise. He did not.

Simon at least is open about being the author. Interesting to think who advertises the everyman products here. Who I wonder? Entirely unconnected to the company? Probably not, but understandable business practice as is book companies writing own reviews for Amazon.

Should not be deleted.

I see nothing wrong with anything in this thread to be honest. If you delete this one you would have to delete at least 20 other ones also - there are a lot of chess book threads where the author or publisher starts chiming in. Personally I see nothing wrong with it as they didnt start the thread in the first place, and any extra information is fine by me!

As far as I am concerned, I don't have any problems with advertising a la Simon Williams, as long as the author makes clear that he advertises for him/herself. The way Rudel advertised for his book Zuke'm (or whatever) is much more misleading imo; he acted as if he was an enthusiast student of the book.

Hi all,

This DVD is fantastic! I bought it off Simon's website as soon as it came out. It arrived yesterday in the post and needless to say, I didn't manage to get a great deal done apart from watch it! Simon, congratulations! I thought 'The Killer Dutch' was the best opening dvd that I have ever seen. I hope you are planning to do others.... Cheesy

I must apologise if my earlier post came across as an 'advertisment' but I was actually answering a question that someone else had posted.
This particular forum was also started by someone else and some of the questions raised have been very interesting. Smiley

I will try to answer some of your chess questions:
On 7...Ne4 8 Nxe4! This is the best move and a real pain for this variation. My main recommendation is 8...fxe4 9 Nd2 d5 10 f3 c5!? which is interesting and messy.
I do believe that 2 h3!? is a very interesting, new and underrated way of playing against any Dutch set up. I say 'any' as this is one of the main pluses of this move, there is less to learn by playing 2 h3.
In my DVD I recommend that Black plays 2...d6 3 g4 e5!? 4 dxe5 Nc6!? a counter gambit!
I have suggested an interesting way of meeting the Staunton Gambit, 1 d4 f5 2 e4 fxe4 3 Nc3 Nf6 4 Bg5 c6!? This was suggested to me by a strong Russian GM and I believe that it is far superior to the more popular 4 Nc6. I believe that the problem with 4...Nc6 is that White can play 5 d5 Ne5 6 Qe2!
I do think that this DVD would be of use to players graded 2400 plus as it has some new ideas in it but I have tried to aim the DVD at players below this range, concentrating on the main ideas behind the opening and not remembering the moves 'Parrot' fashion.
In the DVD I try to cover everything and in a deep way that is not superficial. I am a bit of a perfectionist and I would hate to bring anything 'shabby' out but I guess that it is really the viewers job to judge this!
Ok hope that helps will try to answer questions on this post if I have time!

Though I am supposed to be the moderator here, for some reason the moderating tools do not appear on the page for me.

Once they do, I shall delete the unauthorised advertisement, as this breaks house rules. Everything else appears fine, and as such will be left intact.

That might be the website playing up/not quite ready.  Try emailing Simon and see how he responds.  I know for a fact he's got a box full of DVDs in cases ready to be sold ... I saw them at Hastings at his Dutch themed tournament!

Hi everyone,

Apologies if I am breaking any posting rules, please delete the post if this is the case - I'm answering a specific post so should be ok I hope. Yes we are a commercial website but we are just starting out and there is also plenty of (we hope) high quality free content available.

Probably the shop was still in development when you tried to order, I only turned it live on Tuesday! In any case should you have any problems, please email Simon W direct via the Contact page on the website. I haven't been made aware of any problems and we have taken a number of successful orders already.

Best wishes,
Simon Ansell (gingergm webmaster)

Seconded.  I was going to add something to the thread but I'm going to hold off to see if it's worth it.

This post should not have been made, because it's commercial.  Also it advertises a commercial website, which is contrary to our policy.  I salute your achievements in chess, and it would be great if you would come here to talk about the Dutch, but not about your website and DVD.  In the mean time I'll do my best to get this thread deleted.

Either that or get Tony to authorize your advertisement here.

Aren't there a lot of threads here that could be labelled 'commercials'? For one thing every time Gambit, Everyman and Quality Chess list a new book in the pipeline, we seem to instantly get a thread about it here.

And over the years we've had many threads where authors have been answering questions regarding their books - I'm guilty of that myself - and apart from this one, there's a recent thread about Mongoose's new Catalan book...

So deleting this one could start a domino effect if you're consistent - and if you're not consistent it just seems unfair.

Hi Everyone. I have had a couple of enquires when my DVD, 'Killer Dutch' will be available for purchase. Well the final copy will be delieved to me on Wednesday. You will be able to purchase a copy via my webiste www.gingergm.com on Wednesday.
I will be taking PayPal payments for it. It's retail price will be £19.95 or Euro's 24.95, plus P+P.
You can also send a cheque. The DVD is roughyl 6.5 hours long and covers the Classical variation and all of White's early deviations. I have included some interesting new ideas like 1 d4 f5 2 h3!? (yep I do believe in this variation!)
The DVD will fully equip you with a fully updated way of playing the Classical Dutch and ways of dealing with any early anouying moves! It is similar to my book but I have found some big improvements/mistakes in my book which I have corrected. Obviously my book is a bit old now, so it needs an update!
For example there is some extra material, like 1 d4 f5 2 Nf3 Nf6 3 g3 e6 4 Bg2 Be7 5 0-0 0-0 6 c4 d6 7 Nc3 Nc6!? I have dedicated roughly 45 minutes to this new idea. I orginallt thought it was dubious but it can be used as a very dangerous surprise weapon.
I hope you enjoy the product, it has been produced to a very high standard.
Any questions then please e-mail me at simon@gingergm.com. It is the 1st DVD we have produced so hopefully if it is a success there will be plenty more, any ideas what the next one should be one?
Cheers,
Simon Williams  Smiley

p.s. the orginal run of 100 DVD's was done rather quickly and there where some small mistakes which I wanted to correct before bringing out the final copy. If you purchased this DVD I will replace it with a new one. Just e-mail me!

He does give quite a bit on 7...Ne4 8.Nxe4 and considers it a critical line. I think he now has a different reply to to 9.Nd2 d5 10.f3 compared to his 2003 book.

I don't want to simply post all his lines, but if you give me a link to the relevant forum discussion I'd be happy to compare them.

Quite right. Just shows I should have gone through the whole DVD before I tried to review it!

In my defence he does seem to have more faith in 7...a5 than the others. I also played this line myself for a few years after Williams' Classical Dutch book came out, so I naturally looked at that part first. From the white side I'm more worried about 7...Qe8, but probably I just need to study it more deeply.

To make amends for my mistake I skipped through the video and made an overview of the chapters and approximate durations:

Introduction and basic strategic ideas 38 mins.

7...a5 55 mins.

7...Qe8 50 mins.

7...Ne4 46 mins.

7...Nc6?! 39 mins.

2. g3 early deviations (7. b4, Nh3 systems, Nd2 systems, 7. b3 etc.) 30 mins.

2. c4 early deviations (e3 systems, Bg5 systems) 55 mins.

Gambits (2. g4, 2. e4, 2. h3) 37 mins.

2. Bg5, 2. Nc3 38 mins.

2. Nf3 e6 3. d5 5 mins.

Conclusion 3 mins.

There are brief strategic overviews at the end of every chapter.

It's available from the website.  It's an independent production not a Chessbase DVD. I've no idea if it will end up in chess shops.  I'm not sure 'pre-order' is the right term though.  It's out ... for sale ... you can buy it ...

Depends what you mean by superficial.  If you're 2400 then your definition is going to be very different to mine.  Also depends perhaps on the variation you're talking about - 4 choices for Black at move 7 after all.

As far as I'm aware there are no main suggestsions for White overlooked completely but then as I mentioned before it's a DVD so you're not going to get a reference work.  There's plenty of analysis in the book that doesn't make it on to the DVD because - obviously - even at 7-8 hours nobody can speak fast enough to be able to do that.

On the upside there are important improvements from games Williams and others have played since his book was published in 2003 (e.g. Ward-Williams in the 7. ... Ne4 line).

I'm not sure what else I can say to you.  I'm not a 2400 so I can't view the DVD through a 2400's eyes.

Does he cover the white main moves in detail or just superficially? If he gives some variations against all of white's main replies that's fine.

From that point on you have to start to play by yourself. I guess the Classical Dutch should be relatively "theory-lite" as it is unpopular and the two armies get into contact only in the middlegame, so there are not too many forcing variations. I hope some ideas and guidelines should be enough to play it reasonably succesfully, that's why I consider it a suitable surprise weapon.

In general, I would say "theory-lite" means that you can play an opening without knowing more than 15 moves of theory (effectively it's much less as the main tabiya in the Classical Dutch is on move 7/8) in most main variations. There are many openings nowadays where theory just STARTS after 20 moves!  Shocked

Or am I wrong?

Well you're 300-400 points or more higher rated than me and the people I tend to play so I wouldn't presume to tell you what would be able to help you.  That said. my best bet is that this DVD would be a good introduction from which you'll be able to tell whether you want to investigate further [which I imagine at that level you'll want and need to.  Happily for the likes of me the DVD will be enough].

Is there anybody else of Williams' level who's played the Classical Dutch as long or as frequently as he has?  Certainly not in Britain.  If you want to know about the Classical Dutch I think it's quite a good plan to find out what he's got to say about it.  I'd also agree with the comment earlier saying that Williams presents the material well.

PS: Are there really any 'theory-lite' variations left?

That all sounds very nice!

I am looking for a low-theory surprise-weapon besides my usual King's Indian, perhaps the Classical Dutch could fit the bill.
I have played the Leningrad for some years, so perhaps I should have some familiarity (at least in some anti-lines). But I think the Leningrad is too theory-heavy for being a surprise-weapon.

Do you think this DVD could help me (my level is between 2350 and 2400)?

Structurally I'd say the Killer Dutch is very similar to Williams' book on the Classical Dutch with a similar allocation of space to the various branches of the opening as can be found there.  It's not so much a repertoire DVD as much as it is a broader review of the opening, albeit it very much from Black's point of view.

As pointed out it's a long DVD although no DVD however long can ever be as detailed as a book.  I'd say it's a "Starting Out" type product more than a comprehensive account.  It does it's job very well I'd say.

(and there are some crucial updates from the Classical Dutch book in most sections if not every one.  E.g. 7. ... Nxe4, 8. Nxe4 but also at various points in the 7. ... a5 line and others).

Actually I have it already.

The video runs close to 7 hours. It presents a repertoire built around "Ye old faithful"; the 7...a5 main line in the Classical (this is also covered, presumably by Williams, in a chapter of Dangerous Weapons: The Dutch which I haven't seen). There are lots of strategic guidelines and instructive games on this line.

There are also segments on lines where White doesn't fianchetto and all kinds of Anti-Dutch lines (2.e4, 2.g4 and 2.h3, 2.Nc3, 2.Bg5, 2.Nf3). Some of these sections are rather brief but should be enough to play on club level. In most of these often tactical lines he looks for answers that minimize White's attacking chances, in particular by not grabbing / holding on to offered pawns if there are good alternatives. The crazy lines suggested against 2.Bg5 really sparked my interest, and I've already used several of the other "anti" suggestions as starting points for my own research. 2.h3 intending g4 gets more attention than you'd expect because Williams thinks it's dangerous and worth trying as White.

Williams is an engaging presenter; he looks like he really cares about the lines he presents and that makes it easier to remember.

There are lot of special effects used, like introductory music, chess-related video segments between chapters, varying board types, camera angles and backgrounds etc. They want to make this a big selling point, but to me personally some of it appears a bit gimmicky. At least it doesn't detract from the value of the material, and some will welcome this variety compared to just a presenter and a board for hours on end.
