My curiosity about the Saemisch NID and 4 pawns KID in the book is just to see if this is the same or part of the articles or ebooks he wrote in spanish language and what relationship this chapter have with the entire book or with the "rules", if there are any or if this chapter came out of the blue just to fill same pages and complete the work.  Roll Eyes

How about the actual chess content? Ignoring the rules stuff for a mo.

Would be interested in looking at the saemisch NID, 4p KID. How is the coverage of these lines? Skeleton repertoire?

I don't have the book, but from the excerpt, this is how I understand it. It goes back somewhat to the old Aagaard versus Watson debate with Watson saying the numerous exceptions prove that rules don't matter and Aagaard saying, yes, rules do matter - it is just that there are exceptions.

So now Moskalenko is saying both Aagard and Watson are wrong. There are rules, we just don't know enough to know what those rules are yet.

In a way all three are right, just different ways of looking at it.

I wonder if this publicity will end up helping the book sales. If I did not already have way too many books to read, I would have bought a copy partly out of curiosity.

The publisher, New in Chess, is a sponsor of Chessvibes  Grin

Although I own no book by Moskalenko the guy did have the guts to put out something out of the ordinary.

Quote:
Frankly, I find this introduction amazing. Amazingly silly, that is. If, as Moskalenko claims, the general rules of the game have not been discovered yet, how come there are thousands of grandmasters adopting them, tens of thousands of IMs who play well above the level of the ‘most players’ Moskalenko intends as his audience? How did all these very strong players acquire their current or past level of play without these ‘general rules of the game’?

I find this the most stunning part of the review. Above all Moskalenko is a GM and probably knows a lot of GM's and IM's. So he could have a clue what he is talking about.

Perhaps it comes from the popular view that tittled players 'know' something that the rest of us don't. If there were trully universal rules then chess could be very simple: learn those rules and prosper.

As is, chess theory is quite diverse and confusing. What works in one position could be disastrous in an other position and even tittled players don't always identify the correct plan in a given position.

In this case, the author chose to be philosophical, and the T1-T5 desciptions also just seem very distracting.

There are other books around...

Agree also - what did Arne Moll expect - to be shown the holy grail of chess? I think whats happening with this book, and with some others also is that people are taking marketing hyperbole literally. Relax and look at some chess, as somone said earlier leave the  philosophy to Plato.

I agree completely, Schaak.

It's clear that while GM Moskalenko thought about his response carefully, Arne Moll just banged his out quickly.  I say that because he could have made the same points in about 5 less paragraphs.

Regardless of the quality of the review itself, the way chessvibes handled the response is sadly disrespectful of the author.

Arne Moll and Peter Doggers have the irritating habit of being quite aggressive in the comments of their site if someone disagrees. They should just make their newposts and stick to that.

I do find it a bit odd that they publish the response of the author and then add a reply of their own that is even longer then Moskalenko's piece.

I, like everyone else seems to think, thought that the games were interesting, and made me want to play the French and 1. d4 again, but thought that the coverage of actual Touchstone material and the thought process was quite shabby. In my opinion, it would have been a much better book if he just covered a lot of games using the Touchstones with explanation and thought processes instead of the chapters on the various pieces, and the even wierder chapters on the various openings.

Fundamentally the idea is quite sound, and I like it a lot. Consider the material, development, piece placement, king safety, and time, and make your decisions based on these factors, which are all quite general and can guide you in the right direction. However, the coverage was just disorganized and misallocated.

Strange - I think the touchstone system is one of the easiest to use for a chessplayer. I really like it  - just think about 1-2-3-4-5 and see what comes to your mind when you look at a position.

The book itself offers lots of explanations to this approach and additionally gives insight in some interesting openings and Moskalenkos very special thoughts.

Surely one of the better books one can buy.

I read the whole book and overall agree to the review on chessvibes. I came to the same conclusion:
The brand new system is not convincing. The book does not hold the promises. It is not the first time that subtitles of New in Chess products are very marketing oriented, for instance  "The black Lion - The chess Predators Choice against both 1. e4 and 1. d4" was also misleading, because 1. d4 d6 2. c4 is not covered inside.
Back to Moskalenko: I loved his first two books; this time the material is mostly very interesting, but the proposed system is not convincing.

I have read this book. Well, like I read all my chessbooks...leafing through them and sometimes reading a section that looks interesting more thoroughly.

I bought this book because I liked "The flexible French" by the same author. That was a nice mixture of fundamental opening theory and assorted interesting stuff. Sometimes a little unstructured, but that was not a big problem.

In "Revolutionize your chess" there is also interesting stuff. It is much more unstructured however, so much that it bothered me. Also, the revolutionary chess system doesn't convince at all - not that I expected this, I would be genuinely surprised if some chess author came up with something that actually works and doen't involve hours of study of endgames, tactics and analyses.

My judgment: some interesting stuff but not well organized, does not give a revolutionary new look at the game, necessity to buy depending on severity of chessbook-buying-addiction.
