With so many repertoire books suggesting the exchange variation for White, I'm interested in what this book is going to propose.

Some lines seem fine for equalising to safe ground, but is there going to be chances for counter-attacking?

Well........ I got a reasonable position. I think.
At this moment I'm supposed to work, so I don't have the exact moves here, but I got lots of problems developing my light squared bishop. I finally got to move it at move 30 only to swap it off and get a completely lost position.

Basically I'm working out how to develop my queenside against the catalan without annoying tactics from the bishop at g2.

I just got squashed last weekend against a Catalan, after dropping my stonewall and playing a QGD setup for the first time. I hope Cox book has something good against the Catalan!

Are you sure your loss was the result of the opening? It's common for players to blame their choice of opening for their defeat, when the real cause of the defeat was later in the game.

Against the Catalan I recommend 4...dc4 5.Bg2 Bb4 6.Bd2 a5. Theoretically reputable, solid and not too hard to cover in one chapter.

Sometimes I wonder if you guys actually read:

The book is supposed to have a Catalan line, although I haven't yet decided which one it will be - any ideas welcome, in fact.

The book had the effect good books usually have: it made the stupids more stupid, the intelligent more intelligent and the other thousands of readers remained unchanged.

Have to admit in retrospect it could've been, although by closing time I wouldn't have wrote anything longer than one line long at best.

I'd be really surprised if it included either opening (referring to the Catalan and Reti), since those are clearly beyond the scope of a book on the QGD.  Isn't there enough in the QGD to keep any author busy for one book anyway?

How is covering the Catalan beyond the scope of the book? The book is a repertoire book for Black in the Queen's Gambit Declined and the Catalan is one of the lines White can play against the Queen's Gambit Declined so it is perfectly logical that the book would include a defense to the Catalan and illogical if it didn't.

Are you trying to start an argument? The Catalan is a completely different opening deserving of a book in its own right. If the book includes something "light" on Catalan for the benefit of including a "repertoire" for people then fine, but the big danger is that it would distract from the substantive theme of the QGD. Its a preference but personally I'd leave it out.

Written via iphone in a pub, in northern England, around closing time?

I've decided that I am somewhat in agreement with Markovich on this one, and as such it seems we should all preserve our limited energy for other more exciting chess discussions. We will see when the book comes out but I suspect/hope that not too much space is devoted to the world of the Catalan.

Since it claims to be a repertoire book and given the current popularity of the Catalan on all levels and with two recent tomes on it for white, it's hard to see how it could be left out without getting criticism from the target group of repertoire craving chess lovers...

It's all rather arbitrary, isn't it?  Personally I could understand if a QGD book covered the Catalan, in view of 1.d4 d5 2.c4 e6 3.Nf3 Nf6 4.g3.  Janjgava's book covers it, for example.  On the other hand, I could understand some author's decision not to cover it.  I don't think it's a big deal if you have to buy another book to get Catalan coverage.

Speaking of the Tartakower Var., can anynone refer to me resources (books, internet) to get up to date on the Tartakower, especially from the Black point of view.
I have defended the classical QGD in high level correspondence chess and I need to move on: with virtually perfect play, I was barely able to hold the draw, and I never had winning chances. This was the Orthodox QGD line that appeared in 32 out of 34 games of the Capablanca-Alekhine World Ch. 1927.
