True, but you may be able to play 1...e6 2.Nf3 d5 instead, when 3.g3 dc4 and 3.b3 Be7 are both completely equal, and 3.d4 c6 gets back to a Slav.

That's a possibility, of course, but is 1.c4 e6 2.Nf3 d5 3.d4 c6 considered a Slav? At least, it's not the main line Slav, which the poster asked about. Apart from 4.Qc2, you'll have to know either the Noteboom or the Semi-Slav after 4.Nc3, and either the e3 Stonewall or the e3 Semi-Slav after 4.e3

Another possibility is 4...g6 when White will probably play 5.d4. But, of course, if 4...g6 is not your choice against 1.d4 d5 2.c4 c6 3.Nf3/Nc3 Nf6 4.e3, you may not want to play it against the Gurevich either.

So, I'm afraid you can't rely on a main line Slav against the Gurevich. Either you have to accept a transposition to other lines, or you have to play something non-Slav, e.g. 1...e5 or 1...c5 against 1.c4, and 1...c5 or 1...d5 2.c4 d4 against 1.Nf3.

The price paid is that White can play 4.Qc2, which is currently considered a bit better for White (e.g. by Khalifman in OFWATK). If you are a Semi-Slav devotee, you can play 3...Nf6, when 4.Nc3 is the most common move, allowing 4...e6 and the S-S, but 4.g3, the Catalan, can be a real pain for Black. 4.Bg5 is not so bad because after 4...h6 5.Bf6 Qf6 6.Nc3 c6 we are back in the Moscow Variation, and 6.Nbd2 isn't too scary.

It's worth mentioning that after 4...a6 or 4...e6 White can play 5.b3 instead and harbour plans of a future g4 kingside attack, which is no less dangerous than the main lines with 5.d4.

That is the Gurevich anti-Slav you ran into, and black's best is to accept the Semi-Slav structure. It's definitely something he needs to be aware of and prepared for.

1. c4 c6 2. e4 is of course another one that a number of English players try to make use of.

I think of taking up the Slav, as it is very solid and current theory seems promising for black (e.g. the Hector idea), but last weekend in a team match my team mate encountered a devious attempt to move-order black:

1.c4 c6 2.Nf3 (2.e4 cannot be avoided) d5 3.e3 Nf6 4.Nc3 , and if black now wants to play the "pure Slav" (with dc4: a4 Bf5), what is he to do?
After Bg4 or Bf5 white has a well-timed Qb3 (after cd5:), in other cases (4. ... a6 or e6 white can answer with d4 and black has to know the Chebanenko or Semi-Slav.

What should black do?  Undecided
