I was thinking about a fortress like this:

* * * * * * * *
* * * * * * * *
* * * * * * * *
* * * * * * * *
* * * * * * * *
* * * * * * * *
* * * * * * * *
* * * * * * * *
*

For all remaining moves, Black just moves his rook between f6 and h6, and his king between g8, h8 and h7. White can never cross the 5th rank with his king, his h pawn can go to h5, but no further, and all pawn endings are drawn since White's pawn is an h pawn.

I agree with everything Smyslov_Fan has said. In addition, I would like to point out the possibility of Black making a fortress. If Black can capture the f pawn and then sacrifice both bishops for White's queenside pawns, then it's a fortress as long as Black's rook reaches f6/h6. Therefore, the f pawn could actually turn out to be important!

I wouldn't be surprised if there are fortresses with queen, f and h versus rook, bishop and g as well.

I have no idea how to calculate any concrete variations here since there are so many. I

Thanks everyone for the input. It just made me more convinced that I was correct in taking the draw.

How exactly does the fortress look like in the given position that you were talking about?

I think White's winning chances will lie in getting connected passers.  I don't know if he can do that, but I rather like his chances.  It will take some serious work to see if that's possible.  Black will probably be able to pick up both k-side pawns, but not necessarily in time to do anything.

I think I do prefer White here on first glance. But I could easily be persuaded with a few concrete variations.

Hmm I suppose you are right and I don't mind if you move it.

My first thought was wow, this is gonna be difficult to analyse.

My second thought was to move this to the endgame section.

I'm going to leave it here for now.

White to move.

This is the final position in my most recent game where my opponent offered me a draw and I accepted because I was slightly short on time. Black can surely only hope for a draw because his king has no shelter. My only winning chance would be to push my queenside pawns but I think that is far from clear.

Ideas and suggestions are very welcome! Thank you.
