Can you explain what you mean? Your two sentences contradict each other.

I had problem with 9.b4 variation (I played 9....Nh5 or Ne8 and f5 so Nf3 went for e6 etc ).
So I make a little research and I found some variations with 9...a5 that I liked it.
Maybe  black here must be well prepared.
So because of 9.b4 I look also the Na6 variation

I had problems with the 9. b4 variations so I give a try  at 6/7...Na6 variations also.
I liked for black the 9.b4 a5 .

It's highly possible that he's talking about this one:

Are you guys sure about the Mar del Plata being sound. A lot of the positions in those lines (deep into games by Nakamura) look relatively simplified and computers really really like white's position.

Mar del Plata KID is almost always shown as +/- by computers, the only time it's not is when black is already winning.

Do some analysis with the computer, this is the type of position where guiding it helps immensely.

We have a huge KID related thread on the 9. Ne1/10. Nd3 KID, and if you follow the analysis well beyond move 20 computers are still showing strong white advantage, while by move 25-30 it'll drop substantially. It's pretty typical for this variation.

Nakamura's games have largely been in a variation traditionally considered risky. Radjabov might be a better template to work from.

well I used a bit of hyperbole but what I meant was that white seems to have a fairly solid += in both and that white players might not want to play the fianchetto or h3 setups against the Grunfeld and Benoni.

It's really all preference.  Go for the cake from the get go but risk losing or be content just to slowly stifle black's counterplay and actually win the game later.  Us King's Indian players like trying to checkmate people.  Nothing is more agonizing than denying us that and torturing us for 6 hours over the board.

I'm not sure which I found more surprising, the idea that Black is nowhere near equality (perhaps on a par with the Old Indian at best, whereas I am used to seeing them considered equal or unclear with best play), or the idea that the only (or indeed the biggest) problem for White in the h3/Nf3 system is the ...c5 stuff.

I think there are a lot of top GM's that'd pay good money for your analysis of the Fianchetto and h3 lines if they show "nowhere near equality" for Black. Bologan seems to think that Black is equal in both places, and even Avrukh only found += in the Fianchetto, and who knows if that'll hold up.

Apparently Krasenkow doesn't agree with Bologan about 6. h3, so...

Grin

I won't say "black is nowhere near equality", but I also won't say "black is equal", either. There's definitely nothing set in stone yet.

Petrosian seems to be in the same boat as Korchnoi regarding black's concept in the KID.

On principle it probably `should` be unsound, but theory and practice are different issues.

I can see one of two things happening with the development of Classical KID theory going forward:

#1) White will get a major novelty somewhere in 9. Ne1 that finally gives him the sought-after +=, or failing that 7. Be3 will prove the improved way to go about this classical method of attacking black's set-up.

However, if those don't work:

#2) White will start changing his approach to refuting the concept of black's set-up, with a more restraining/prophylactic system such as 6. h3, which in many ways attempts to work as an improved Petrosian System (6. Be2 e5 7. d5). This is noteworthy because the Petrosian System at one point caused black substantial problems, meaning that type of approach constriction approach (instead of chaos flank attacks) may ultimately be better.

Who knows...

I think the constriction approach is the right one.  Why give Black even the vague hope of checkmate?  He has nowhere near equality in the fianchetto and h3 lines and white's position after 7. Be3 is much easier to play despite Radjabov's =lizing tries.  The only problems with h3 and the fianchetto are that they force white into certain systems against the Benoni and Grunfeld that may be suboptimal.

The Petrosian system was a giant thorn in the neck for black until Leonid Stein found the ultra-precise 1. d4 Nf6 2. c4 g6 3. Nc3 Bg7 4. e4 d6 5. Nf3 O-O 6. Be2 e5 7. d5 a5 8. Bg5 h6 9. Bh4 Na6 10. O-O Qe8 11. a3 Bd7 12. b3 Nh7 13. Nd2 h5 14. f3 Bh6 followed by an amazing planting of the dark-squared bishop on c5 if white doesn't acquiesce to its exchange.  No such lines exist against the the h3 and Nf3 setups.

As a starting point for analysing the KID, I recommend the games of Bronstein, Geller and Nunn.  For white, the games of Taimanov and Korchnoi are excellent.

Of course, there are plenty of others who have played the KID including world champions, but these helped to shape the discussion as much as anyone.

(Elsewhere on this site, there's a poll discussing the greatest KID players of all time)

I'm really torn by the thought that computers like the White side of the Classical KID.  I started playing the white side when I read Petrosian's comment that he thought the KID was fundamentally unsound.  (No, I don't know exactly where it was that I saw it.) This was long before computer analysis was reliable for more than 5 ply!

I do enjoy playing against the KID because it feels like I'm upholding the side of Right and Good, but I don't like supporting the side of an unthinking machine that can't appreciate Black's game.  The KID remains one of the great mysteries for computers, but I do tend to agree with them that White should be better!  Smiley

For one thing (speaking of Nakamura games), it is not at all the case that the soundness of the Mar del Plata depends on the "Give Mate or Die Trying" (as a recent NIC Yearbook article put it) approach associated with meeting 9. b4/Nd2 with 9...Ne8/Nd7.

Frankly also I respect BPaulsen's researches.  Not that he's always going to find Chess Truth, but he's a strong player and pretty serious about the search for White's advantage.  If he hasn't found it, you can be sure it's not easy to find.

Then again, maybe some U1200 scholastic player will stumble onto it.  Like, the Holy Grail is lying under some old cow dung in a ruined barn in northern Norway.

I'd encourage you to analyze it yourself. It's highly possible that Nakamura played it wrong and did indeed strike gold out of nowhere, but is it also possible that you hold too much faith in your bit-box?  Grin

Like I said, nobody is sure about it.  But unto this day, it has held up.  If you want solidity, play the Slav.

Whoo, look at that, I'm over 4,000.  Too bad it's all such crap.

No, not your bad.  I did indeed say that nobody would be surprised if Black's side of the Mar del Plata system were busted someday.  I just also said that I would be happy to take Black's side for the time being.  It's only that when you equated the Mar del Plata to the "Black's classical KID set-up", I disagreed with your use of that term.  The classical interpretation of the KID I take to be the Boleslavsky/Bronstein interpretation from the 1940's and early 50's, with Nbd7 and c6.

@gewgaw: For a year or two I thought that Piket's system with 9.Ne1, Be3 and b4 before a5 was busting the Mar del Plata.  And I cranked out a number of nice wins that way.  Then Garry played Piket in that famous game and busted my bust.

I don´t have no source, but but I read a couple of years ago, that Garri was quite sceptically about the correctness of the KID.
Afaik 9.Ne1 +10.Be3 is a killer in cc.

Generally, that's the case, but in the KID, computers aren't as useful for various reasons, some being:

1. Black makes positional concessions in return for kingside chances in the KID. Positions are generally quite closed, a positional feature computers generally don't handle particularly well. Computers are well known to misevaluate positions featuring slow kingside buildups, so most computers think White is winning until the Black attack crashes through.

2. A lot of times these attacks require heavy material investment for attacks that can last 10-20 moves! Therefore, the benefits can lie out of the computers search depth.

Hope this helps! Grin

The responses are interesting. I've been looking at games in the Mar del Plata variation with Nakamura as black. Computers seem to absolutely love white's position near the end of the game until white makes some egregious blunder. Are computer evaluations bad to rely on here. I thought computer evaluations became more reliable further on into the game.

lol, this is quite a provocative statement.  Do you really think black's classical KID setup could be busted?  IMHO, that's like saying black is just busted in chess.
Huh

Black's "classical KID setup" in my conception is with the QN on d7 and pawn on c6.  The Mar del Plata is a system that I would be happy to play as Black based on my current understanding, but it's close enough to the edge that I don't think very many people would be surprised if a bust someday emerged, no, nor would it overturn anyone's fundamental conception of chess.  It's speculation, of course, since people have tried hard to bust it and failed so far.

Now if the Slav were someday busted, that might be the same as saying Black is busted in chess, but I don't think that stands any chance of happening.

Top-level practice is in context of computers, of course, just not during the game.  And since this line is still relied upon at the top, it is indeed considered sound enough to play, based on everyone's current understanding.  The whole line is so complicated, though, that I don't think anyone would be terribly surprised if somebody came up with += or even a bust to Black's whole conception.  But a lot of people have tried, and it hasn't happened yet.

I've been (unfortunately) unable to find a route to += in all of the variations after 9. Ne1, 9. Nd2, and 9. b4 after a maddening amount of research.

My impression is that it's black's best bet, and barring something significant theoretically there's no reason it shouldn't be playable.

It even seems like elite GM practice has seen a recent shift to 7. Be3 instead of 7. 0-0.

The kingside attack is sound at all levels, although you have to be well prepared as Black. This line is probably Black's best chance for equality, as Radjabov's and Nakamura's games have shown.

I am trying to develop a repertoire for playing freestyle chess (i.e. computer assisted chess).

1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 g6 3.Nc3 Bg7 4.e4 d6 5.Nf3 0-0 6.Be2 e5 7.0-0 Nc6 8.d5 Ne7

In the context of computers is this all out attack on the kingside sound? Or since white breaks through on the queenside faster will a computer defend as white and always win?
