Try to arrange your routine and diet so that you can have a proper dump before the game. You will feel great - full of energy.

Slow energy release foods such as bananas might help too during the game.

The point about drinking lots of water is a good one too, as this definitely helps concentration, just not too much - you don't want to spend half the game away from the board  Smiley

Maybe that's part of the problem? Doing to many exercises? Work your ass off before a tournament, but take a more relaxed approach the last day or even last two days.

Yeah, I agree stress is definitely a big part about it. I do tend to have a decent lunch though....

My doctor has said that I'm normal, I take my daily vitamins, I'm not that big of a person. I'm probably just a morning person, but I want to find a way so that I can actually play Smiley I go to sleep at like 10 at night, wake up at 7 normally on oturnament days, I try to get a lot of exercise the day before so that I can maximize my sleeping time.

I'm surprised that people haven't mentioned nerves. If you had a tough first game and had to deal with a lot of stress and such, you're surely going to feel tired during your next game.

Apart from medical issues, one of the most common reasons for people feeling tired in afternoon rounds is having eaten a heavy lunch in the time between rounds!

AVOID FAST FOOD!

The old rule was to play "hungry".  That's always been a bit extreme for me, so I try to eat some carrots and lighter fare between rounds.  Avoid quick sugars and caffeine cos they cause crashes!

During the game, drink plenty of water!  It's amazing how such a simple act can really help your body to concentrate!

You may want some sort of caffeine available for the latter part of the game.  Don't wait to feel tired when using caffeine.  If you know you start to crash around, say 3:30, start drinking your favorite caffeinated drink around 3:00.

If you don't want to use caffeine and the tournament allows food, some light pick-me up such as yoghurt, carrots or fig newtons also works.

Hi there.
1.Do you take a vitamin pill?  try CVS mega vitamins
2.  Have you had blood work?  Try getting a thyroid and blood sugar levels
3.  If you get up at like 7 am and are sleepy at 2 you may have to keep sleeping and wake up at like 10 during tournaments.   You may need more sleep?
4. What medication if any do you take?  If you take Benydryl it will definatly make you tired for example...
5. Naps longer then like 30 minutes will make you tired.  Try getting a book on sleep!
6,  If you are a big guy you may have sleep Apnea.
ALl and all you should get a doctors onpinion.
Finally you may just be a moring person.  But I think the naps can make you sleepy so try power naps no more than 30 min.
Good luck and keep me posted on how you feel!,
Zatara
PS>  Don't drink much coffee in the morning more than 2 cups can back you crash

I love to play chess, I love to study chess, and I love to go to tournaments but there is one thing that keeps bugging me.

I always feel drowsy when playing chess in the afternoon, especially long games and after morning games I just feel totally wiped. I've hung a queen in the afternoon and just normally blunder like crazy. I try napping in between rounds but I'm too stressed out to really fall asleep and once the next round comes, I can barely calculate 2 moves ahead. Anybody else have this problem? It's really preventing me from playing full tournaments and getting tournament experience.
