In Shen-Modiakhi 2007 there was 13.Bxc6 Bd3 and looked ok for black unless there is something else. 14.Qc2 was an alternative ...Bxd2 15.Qxd2 Nxe4 16.Nxe4 Bxe4 17.Rad1 f6 18.Qxd6 Rxd6

Indeed it seems worth considering.  I notice that it apparently led to an unclear position in a game Shen Yang-Van Wely.

Actually it makes more sense when I look at it from whites point of view and I agree that Bxd2 is anti positional once you mention f2-f4 idea. Thank you for helping out kylemeister.

Btw, what are your thoughts of a move like 13.dxc6 in reply to 12...Bh6. Its not that I am necessarily recommending it for white for any reason but it is certainly a critical option. I found that 11.dxc6 was a bad move due to black playing d5 and tactics along the dark diagonal but now that the bishop has moved to h6 it at least seems like an option to consider.

Just offhand, 12...Bh6 is a natural-looking move which makes the bishop more active, adds some pressure against e4, and hinders a possible f4.  It would be quite antipositional to rush into trading it for the knight.

In this game Kramnik went for 9.Nbd2. This position is after 9...a5 10.a3 Bd7 11.b3 c6 12.Bb2

* * * * * * * *

Now Van Wely playes a move that I hope someone can explain for me: 12...Bh6

First I thought the idea was 13...Bxd2 and 14...c5 but the game went 13.Kh1 c5 and now white could technically avoid 14...Bxd2.

Please help!!!
