In many ways, I think it's an exellent way to staying in touch with friends living in other cities.

In many ways I prefer good old email. The fact that my son lives 100 km away hasn't changed my opinion on this.
Perhaps Facebook in itself isn't shallow, the way people use it usually seems to be. Just like chatting; I don't like that either.

The book had the effect good books usually have: it made the stupids more stupid, the intelligent more intelligent and the other thousands of readers remained unchanged.

I think Facebook is what you want it to be. You don't have to waste time with it and you don't have to be shallow.  Wink In many ways, I think it's an exellent way to staying in touch with friends living in other cities.

BUMP  Smiley

ChessPublishing.com now has its own Facebook page!  Feel free to  "like" and post: http://www.facebook.com/pages/ChessPublishingcom/261317583930203

On the same note, I was curious how ChessPub users would feel about an official Twitter account.  One idea I mentioned to Tony is "tweeting" whenever a new update is posted to the main site (this can be done on Facebook too, of course).  Any ideas or feedback is welcome.

At present, everyone wants to be part of Facebook, as its getting popularity very soon. So there is nothing bad to join facebook. This also benefits to hard relationship among the members.

I understand why companies are adveertising on TV and I understand to some extent that ChessPub will benefit being exposed on FB (but not really).

However I cannot see what I as a member will benefit from it.
It will be nice to see the real names behind the handles (Is that the only benefit?). I should however weight that benefit to the inconvenience of beeing publicly exposed (outside ChessPub). It is not uncontroversial to take part in FB as I am sure you know.

What kind of proof is that?

I'm about to show my ignorance.

Why would ChessPub want to be on facebook?

Why do companies advertise on TV?

Social media are even more effective than television as, if you do it right, you can engage & interact with your audience/customers etc.

The ChessPub is of course already a fine example of social media interaction - but a group on Fb might be a way of getting through all the anonymous aliases here.

For chesspublishing.com it could be a good idea to be seen on Fb - there is already a lot of chess associated content there, as well as chess players.

For the ChessPub, it depends on if there's enough interest - a bit like some years ago when we talked about a possible gathering in real life - which didn't happen iirc. On facebook it would at least be easier to arrange...

Short answer - no, but you'll soon come to enjoy the voyeurism anyway.

It's a terrible timesink, but a very handy way to keep in cybertouch with family, and occasionally satisfy your curiosities about old semi-forgotten friends.

Facebook is what you make of it.  For some, it's a way to find out inane and pointless things about your friends.  For others, it's simply a good way to stay in touch with different people.

Or get to know different people, get a notice every time someone has played Mafia Wars etc, or see a link on someone's status that leads to something interesting, funny, stupid, nostalgic...

Like this one, letting us know what will happen when the elusive boson is finally harnessed:

http://crave.cnet.co.uk/gadgets/man-arrested-at-large-hadron-collider-claims-hes...

In short, on Facebook you have to take the good with the bad.
