Will I have to root for Der Mannschaft again, like in 2006?

"Die Mannschaft". The team is female, even if her members are male. Wink

The draw is on December 2nd but until then Sweden can hope to get the dream group of Poland, England and Ireland - but even so, we probably won't get very far...

Germany or Holland would be the obvious picks to win (Spain too perhaps, but it's very rare that the same team wins twice in a row.) - potential surprise winners could be Russia or Croatia, as the tm is played in Slavic countries they could expect some crowd support. Denmark could also go quite far, a team in harmony, solid defence and quick counter-attacks are usually a good formula so they definitely have the potential to beat almost any team there - if they can avoid their usual nemesis, Spain.

Several danish experts believe England would be the best pot 2 draw for Denmark.

My dream draw for Denmark is

Poland (much closer to Denmark than Ukraine)
Russia (alternatively England)
Sweden (neighbours!! - Greece might be easier)

My favourites for the title are Germany and Spain.

The Germans with Klose in form will definitely be one of the favourites, 3-0 vs Holland is impressive even for a friendly - especially since the Dutch seemed to have Hannibal Lecter in the team :))

England might be a real contender for once, though I doubt it as they were remarkably inefficient vs Sweden yesterday, given those same chances Holland or Germany would have no doubt scored 3-4 more goals.

Actually, if we hadn't had Zlatan on the team wandering about doing absolutely nothing, we'd probably drawn the game and kept the "unbeaten by England since 1968" - the only goal came when Wernbloom was off getting treatment for a bleeding nose, i.e we were practically two man down for a few minutes...

So why bother about this match today?

We Dutch álways bother about matches against Germany. Or football is a lot less fun. It's a bit like the Scotch - they rather beat England in Wembley than become WCh.
And yes, it has everything to do with 1974, when Der Mannschaft deservedly won.

Unbelievably, England beat both Sweden and Spain this week!

Ok, they were friendlies. And yes, Cesc Fabregas was right to describe England's tactics as "negative", but the results are still impressive.

The English really need to lift their game, but the number of young players who were impressive this week is heartening.

Friendlies are totally uninteresting. In particular when the Dutch team plays a friendly.

Really liking the Dutch football since Cruyff (I think he would have won the final with his team if Rinus Michels won't have made more than a football match out of the final thus overmotivating his team.) I don't value the match today too much. Half of the Dutch team was missing. And a tournament is always something else than a friendly - even on this level.

When talking to my friends and acquaintances about the coming EuroCH they all think the same like I do: This is one of the best German teams ever. But tournament is tournament. One bad k.o.-match and it's over. Spain and Netherlands are really strong and France, Portugal, England and someone we don't think of will be dangerous in each match. (Personally I don't believe in England till Sir Stanley Matthews will have his reincarnation. But take me as a madman.  Cheesy)

So why bother about this match today?

Oho. Fortunately our German friends on this forum don't seem too interested in football.

Brian Laudrup was their star player in that game against Germany, their only truly attacking player according to the link.

Seems I remembered wrong: "During the dispute with Brøndby over his transfer fee, it was discussed whether the Danish Football Association should ban Laudrup from the national team.[5] Following three games in the qualification campaign for the Euro 1992, Laudrup decided to quit the national team in November 1990 alongside Michael Laudrup and Jan Bartram, as he lacked respect for coach Nielsen"
[...]
"Laudrup returned to the national team under coach Nielsen in April 1992.[17] In 1992, Laudrup travelled with the Danish national team to the Euro 1992 in Sweden, and in a strictly defensive strategy, Laudrup was one of the few attacking players. Though he did not score a single goal in the competition, his skill and speed was an important part of the Danish team "
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brian_Laudrup

As for a game being boring or not, it boils down to if you're cheering for one of them or just watching a game. In the latter case, there are many boring games even today with the back pass rule...

It's always off-side when you score against Germany, here's another example  Smiley

The reason I mentioned it is because I saw the game highlights and match analysis on ESPN Classic. And the Danish players themselves were saying that it was like some sort of miracle occurred that day and that their best strategy was to line the goal and pass back the ball. From the players themselves.

Well I can prolly come up with a lot of very boring games during the cups. Usually fortunately due to a lack of  quality, such as with that Germany-Denmark final (where both lacked the quality).

The worst ones though are the ones like you mention Germany-Austria. Though there are more infamous ones, though more goals got scored there...

The second-half started off very much in the same vein. Denmark put eight people behind the ball, dropped deep and made Germany try and play through them. Without wide players in the final third, Germany had no method of creating gaps in between the defence and midfield. With Germany and Berti Vogts so stubbornly committed to their 5-3-2 system, there was only going to be one eventual winner.

Well, usually it's a bad idea to back down defending a 1-0 lead, even the Italians have failed at that at times - so if the German World Champions couldn't attack efficiently enough then it's their own fault. Why should the underdog keep on attacking when they already have the lead? Especially since, iirc, the Laudrup brothers and 1-2 other players were boycotting the national team at the time - so they didn't have all that much to attack with anyhow.

Besides, after the infamous game Germany-Austria in the World Cup some years before, the Germans didn't really have any moral upper ground on not wasting time while in the lead... THAT was a boring game - not to mention disgusting...

I made no claims about what Denmark should have/shouldn't have done, I just commented on how Greece might have a challenger for the most boring tournament winners.

And the Danish players themselves were saying that it was like some sort of miracle occurred that day and that their best strategy was to line the goal and pass back the ball. From the players themselves.

Italy years ago, like the 70s and 80s were outrageously defensive. However I think this stood out more because they were capable of beating these teams by two or three goals, but instead they went a goal up and defended the rest of the match. In the 1982 final which they won, if you look at their scores they were scoring (and conceding) many goals.

In fact Spain in just the last world cup could be called a boring team and "masters of 1-0". But I would say they were significantly more entertaining than... Greece or Denmark and their direct balls. There's a difference between being efficient and being boring.

Brazil were boring at times when they won in 1994, especially when you think of what we expect from Brazil and their traditional attacking flair. The goalless final of 1994 is regarded by many as the most boring world cup final ever.
