I liked England's chances as a dark-horse with Capello. Without Capello, England may not even get out of its group. This is a really dark day for English football, even though Capello's stand defending Terry was wrong on so many levels.

Yeah guilty until proven innocent is of course the proper way to go. I would have kicked Terry out ages ago, certainly as captain, but I think that is up to the coach not his employer.

I don't think racist comments made on a pitch need to be tried in court. The video evidence was compelling enough for the FA to make an immediate ruling on his captaincy. I am a bit baffled that they haven't banned him as they did Luis Suarez in a much less convincing case. It seems that they may wait til the season's over before banning him, as if that makes any sense.

The FA has the power to strip Terry of his captaincy. I'm not a huge fan of the English FA, but Capello's defense of Terry based on the fact that he hasn't been found guilty in a criminal court is wrong-headed and too legalistic.

Capello, as the England Manager, should have been involved in the decision to strip Terry of the captaincy, but the decision is a footballing decision, not a legal decision.

Terry clearly made racist comments on the pitch, and should no longer be captain of a team that has Blacks on it. That doesn't mean he shouldn't play for England.

As a Liverpool fan, I'd love for Harry Redknapp to take over the reins as quickly as possible, and for Spurs to then stumble out of the running for a Champions League spot. Ideally, Liverpool would learn how to score in league play and take over third this season.

Ok, most likely, Stuart Pearce will take over until the season's over, trying to imitate Capello's style through the summer. England does have a few good managers, but I wouldn't mind a Hiddink or Mourinho to take over.

I suppose the big question is who is willing to take the blame for England being eliminated in the group play? Capello managed to make them play Italian-style in a reasonable fashion, and now whoever takes over the job will probably have take over that game-idea and troop as there's little time for anything else.

It would probably make sense to find another Italian to take over, but I gather the crowd calls for an Englishman...?!

Hope? The Cruijff/Van Gaal combo.

Saw that Capello quit today - so who do think/hope will take over his job?

Could Greece make it through like they did in 2004? Group A is so weak compared to all the other. Of course, Spain has to be exultant!

The group with England looks to be filled with four teams that could have expected to advance, but not win their group.

I'm still rooting for the Dutch to advance out of their group, even after their embarrassing performance in the WC final.

Sweden, England, France and Ukraine is a group where everybody will expect to go through.

Denmark, Holland, Portugal and Germany is the most interesting group - every game is a potential group final!

We'll prolly pull a repeat of the last EC. Beating the crap out of the top teams and then fly out in the next round Wink

I very much doubt it.

Matthews in his current state would probably improve England.  Not many people have a huge amount of faith in the current manager.  John Terry's legs are shot.  Overall, I would say the side is some way short of, say, the Euro '96 side that failed to win even though we were at home (England somewhat unfortunate at that tournament, I would suggest).
