Michael,

Thank you for clarifying which player holding his chin is you! This seems to be a common pose for chess players.

My wife saw me at a tournament once and thought I was in agony. I was concentrating hard and had my head in both hands . If I remember correctly, I actually won that game. Chess is not very sexy.

he won't do it, I give him the FM title, but he won't get farer than this. Especially not with university studies and other hobbies he doesn't want to restrict, but he probably wouldn't achieve the GM title if he just trained chess all day, remember you need 2600 performance against good opposition to get a norm ... anyway why does this guy get a chessbase report?

Will is a good guy and a clubmate of mine in the Durham City club (http://www.communigate.co.uk/ne/durhamcitychess/index.phtml *). So far as I know there is no University club in Durham. There always used to be one, but in recent years practical difficulties (plus the internet?) have prevented one being revived. A sign of the times? -- neighbouring Sunderland, a much bigger city than Durham, has, would you believe, no chess club whatsoever nowadays and so no teams in the local league. Most dispiriting.

* That's me at the back on the left holding his chin!

Interesting read. I assume that his professional life is gonna be playing chess, and managing the Durham university chess club, and that he has abundance of time for preparation? He maintains the blog to track his progress as well. I hope he posts what he's studied on day to day basis. It's just like, what they call in software circle, "Open-Source".

Also, there's no mention about the time limit within which  he's to become a GM? Is it within 10 years?
