This kind of stunt should carry a "Do not try this at home" label, since many players are prone to miscount when claiming the 50 move draw.  Grin

You don't need to claim that way if the 50 moves have just been completed by your opponent's move, which was the case in Shirov-Carlsen.

Yes, but when claiming a draw based on the 50-moves rule you have to show which move you intend to play. You can guess what Shirov suggested.

Keep in mind Kramnik helped Anand with WC prep on the Catalan.

Also Shirov confirmed on Chessvibes in the comment section that the 175th move never got played - the 50 move draw rule was claimed.

Brilliant 175th move by Shirov.

Haha definitely. I think he was trying to stick it to the kid for his bratty refusal to draw. Shirov has a good sense of humor.

I also find it interesting that Anand stuck with the Catalan considering Kramnik's ridiculous record on the black side of that opening. I guess he just wants to get the max out of his Wch prep.

Amazing that Anand plays the Catalan v Kramnik ! Looked like Vlad was ready for that.

I wonder if Vishy feared Kram would play the Berlin !

Indeed Vishy seems to be copying Kramnik or is it the other way round?

Wow! Anand is showing us what he had in mind against Topalov if he'd played 1.e4. Anand's positional understanding seems to be matched only by one player, and they'll face off next!

Who's bringing the popcorn?

(Meanwhile, Kramnik continues his mastery over Shirov. Very impressive play by the two world champions!)

The "let's take Magnus' rating points" gravytrain continues today.

Carlsen uses the QID fairly frequently. The line he chose is itself fairly positionally ambitious, but Kramnik's 13. Qb5 is a nice new try that improves on an earlier effort of his.

If Carlsen was just content to draw there were a few different ways he could've treated the opening earlier on.

I'm curious as to why Carlsen chose to play the QID of all things against Kramnik. I would've expected something sharper.

I just saw the first round results.

Shirov and Anand drew in a rather weird looking Berlin-type Spanish. (I'm not familiar with the line, it may be completely normal!)

Kramnik seemed to completely outplay Carlsen in a very positional Queens Indian and scored a valuable full point!

I expect the Kramnik bandwagon to get rather full after that first brilliant game, especially considering his last game was a great win against Shirov!

I don't know that Anand is off-form. He's taken a well-deserved break, but he will probably be rested and ready while the other three may be a bit tired after the Olympiad.

I chose Kramnik too, but I consider Anand the favorite.
