Maybe all the authors of low quality new chess books should team up to form Quantity Chess  Grin

I can never understand the rationale of  publishers resorting to print on brownish (paperbackish type) paper or paper which can turn brown in a matter of months.  It makes reading for long periods difficult for my eyes.  Yes, I'm getting old.....  Wink

I've browsed "Chess Strategy for Club Players" and my first impression was, on the contrary, that it's full of instruction and explanations; a "complete" strategy manual in the style of Euwe and Silman. To me it looked like it could be useful down to 1500 level. After all, most "club players" are well below 1900.

I have Naroditsky's book and actually the content in itself is great! If anyone sees this material for the first time they will likely learn a lot from it, and improve their understanding. But the problem I and many people have with it is too much of the material is well-known and copied from other books, especially Dvoretsky's. So those who already have a good library are disappointed. I would say this book is more advanced than Grooten's, likely for 2000 and above.

ya ,

the paper is rough and coarse , also it is not white and bright.
it's maybe funny for some one , but for me the appearance and the "feel" of a book is imortant.

I find no fault with the paper in Studying Chess Made Easy but the design is pretty bad. At least in the last few years Batsford's book designs have progressed from downright terrible to mediocre. Still, compared with the other chess publishers (Gambit, Everyman, Quality), they have a long way to go.

I have the batford edition on soltis' "studying chess made easy " and  I love it.  I don't see anything wrong with the paper or anything else about it. Are we talking about the same book?

I have heard nothing but bad things about Naroditsky's book. I've even heard comments alluding to Schiller as a better buy and author!

Low quality new chess books !

Well folks,
Just today I recieved another set of new chess books , and I would like to share with you my thoughts, and begging  for your great opinions.

First  honestly I must tell you that I was surprized by very low quality paper in these prints ! (except for "Soviet chess stategy" from Quality chess ).I'm one of that type persons who the appearence and lay out of a book is critical for wetting his reading appetite !
Second ; the bad thin font of "New in chess" products is extremely annoying me.Why they dont choose another font & format ?

But about the  CONTENTs;

The book "chess stategy for club players " is problably for 1900-2300 rated players, although some parts is useful for intermediate player.the book doesnt have explanatory or instructural format ,although impressive analysis.

"studying chess made easy "with that very bad paper quality ,is a ground-breaking style book. The author , Andrew soltis completely criticizes previouse big names like Kotov and his classic " think like a grand master ", assuming that there is not such a thing as "way of thinking " among GMs , and its a big myth in chess !

"Mammoth book of chess'' , unlike his proceeders like "a complete guide for idiots''  lacks a good structure. Starting from some simple mates it gradually  dives into annotating scattered games with brief  explanations.the paper quality is horrible !

Naroditsky's "mastering positional chess "consists of some of his own games and notes without any new or especial  matters and themes.

The best of this set  for me , of course is "Soviet chess stategy ", covering a lot of fine and elegant  materials.

Overall , I'm not satisfacted with my recent book buys.
What is your opinion ?
Good or bad , please share with me.
thanks
