A few possible downsides to the 1.Nf3 move order:

- It won't be easy to transpose to a Bird with f4 later on (which Larsen sometimes did), though there are some transpositions if White is allowed to play Bb5, Ne5 and finally f4.

- The Trompowsky-ish 1.Nf3 d5 2.b3 Bg4!? may have more point (or at least different points) in this move order

- 1.Nf3 c5 2.b3 d6 3.Bb2 e5 is an ambitious system where, after White breaks with e3 and d4, the tempo-gaining ...e5-e4 may be useful for Black.

- After 1.Nf3 g6 White should probably have something else prepared (2.b3 Bg7 3.d4 looks unthreatening)

Thanks for your help. I was wondering by playing Nf3 first I would be less likely to get the e5 lines which I guess are the most obvious challenge to 1. b3?

I was trying to work out the downsides of the 1.Nf3 move order.

Perhaps you could help?

It's the Nimzo - Larsen Attack. Larsen always played 1. b3, and Nimzowitsch always played 1. Nf3 and 2. b3. The newest source is Odessky's book.

I've never heard it called the "Smyslov-Larsen Attack" before. Surely this is just the Nimzo-Larsen attack? Nimzowitsch normally used the 1.Nf3 move order, whereas Larsen used 1.b3

I'm looking for references on the so-called Smyslov-Larsen Attack which, I believe is :

1. Nf3 something 2. b3 i.e. A Nimzo-Larsen Attack prefaced by 1. Nf3

Maybe this line has not had any coverage previously?  Cool
