Black should have a small edge in that line after 6... axb5 7. exf6 Nc6.

The equivalent line with 2. Nf3 (2...g6 3. d4 cd 4. Qxd4 Nf6 5. Bb5) was an idea of Bronstein's which I think was for a long time considered slightly better for White, though I have the impression that it isn't in favor these days.

If the consensus here is 5.Nc3 is critical, that is also of interest to Grand Prix Attack or Closed Sicilian players, who can try the move order 1.e4 c5 2.Nc3 g6!? (avoiding 2...Nc6 3.Bb5!?) 3.d4 cxd4 4.Qxd4 Nf6 5.Nf3.

I haven't seen mentioned in this thread the line:  1.e4 c5 2.Nc3 g6!? 3.d4 cxd4 4.Qxd4 Nf6 5.Bb5 a6 6. e5

It's mentioned in my MCO-13...is it really not very good?  I've played it a few times.  I'm assuming a similar variation could be used with 2. Nf3?

Thanks.

Well I'm actually the one that mentioned 9.Nc4 so perhaps Ametanoitos was talking about another variation. Your analysis seems correct to me, in fact I'd rather be Black.  There's the more sedate 9.Nxc6 variation which results in Black having an isolated c-pawn.  Is there anything to that?

Btw, I agree that the endgame resulting after 9.Nxc6 Qxa4 10.Nxa4 bxc6 should be ever so sligthly better for White, but I have hard time believing that this should scare Black away from playing 2...g6. Black seems to be in absolutely fine shape here, so maybe 5.e5 is better afterall, but even here im not really convinced...

I got the right guy, the game is even on the base, but indeed I could not find any game of him playing 2.Nc3 Nc6 Bb5. I don't know why but when he was in front of me I was sure I had seen him playing that line. Maybe I was just wrong. But this is not clear at all that:

-2.Nc3 g6 3.d4 cxd4 is bad for Black
-2.Nf3 g6 3.d4 cxd4 4.Qxd4 Nf6 5.Nc3 (of course e5 is very dangerous but maybe still playable for Black) is bad for Black. Personnally, I got this line only once against someone of my level, he was prepared on this line and I wasn't. I have played 5..Nc6 6.Qa4 d6 7.e5 dxe5 8.Nxe5 Qd4 9.Nxc6 Qxa4 10.Nxa4 bxc6 improvised over the board and got a nice play but it seems to score quite bad on database.

I began to play 2..g6 because of the Rossolimo (and I hate that early Bxc6 in the g6 line) but I might consider returning if I can't enjoy/have good chances against 2..g6 3.Qxd4

I was so afraid of the lines beginning with 3..cxd4 4.Qxd4 Nf6 5.e5 (which is really different here with with the knight on c3 instead of f3) that I decided to play 3..Bg7 and I lost anyway, I had no idea how to handle the position. Indeed, in the analysis he told me he would have played 5.e5 but home analysis says that 5..Nh5 is not that bad for Black. 5.Nc3 is indeed interesting too and quite critical for the 2.Nf3 g6 3.d4 cxd4 line.

"This is what GM Andrei Sokolov did to me: he is a specialist of the line 1.e4 c5 2.Nc3 Nc6 3.Bb5" Is that line so dangerous as to want to avoid it?

EDIT: I can't find a single game of GM Sokolov A with this line in my database. You sure u got the right guy?

I was under the impression that after 7.e5 that 7...dxe5 8.Ne5 Qd4 was satisfactory for Black but it's complicated and maybe I'm mixing up variations.

This is treated, as it happens, in the most recent (April 2011) Dragons update.  However this belongs in the Dragons forum, not Anti-Sicilians, eh?

As Black, I gave up 2...g6 due to 4.Qxd4 myself and even when I rarely play the line I go for 1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 g6 3.d4 Bg7 !? which might lead to exchange sac by black with best play. Objectively after 4.Qxd4 black might be holding his own but I found out that it is not easy to play that kind of position with black pieces. I was using the line to avoid Rossolimo but now I believe it is much better to be ready to face Rossolimo than 4.Qxd4. Btw this discussion is sort of related to dragons section (as it tends to transpose to AD or even normal dragon ) and there is another thread there which you might find useful.

http://www.chesspub.com/cgi-bin/yabb2/YaBB.pl?num=1278690133

You will also find the exchange sacrifice mentioned by Greet at the link.

Don't get me wrong, again  4.Qxd4 should not be disaster for black but I just find it difficult to counter.

It's usually thought that White can get an advantage with either 4.dxc5 or 4.d5. But in the first case, Black has done OK with 4.dxc5 Qa5+ 5.c3 Qxc5 6.Na3 Nf6 (immediately 6...b6 is also possible) 7.Nb5 b6. So I play 4.d5, prepared for the Schmid Benoni. After 4...d6 I think White just about has time to insert 5.h3 to remove Black's ...Bg4 option.

I agree White should be slightly better in that line. Black has an interesting provocative alternative though - 6...Bg7. Ponomariov won a nice game as Black against Rublevsky with this. If Black is playing all-out for the full-point I'd suggest this is the way to go:

3.c3 d5! is a transposition to a line analysed by Ftacnik in his GM Rep no 6 and by Greet in his SO Acc book and is OK for Black.

I thought the received wisdom was that Black should try to get in ...b5 (instead of ...b6), even as a sacrifice? Alternatively there's a new plan (mentioned in the 2nd edition of "Black Explained" I think) of ...Nb6 and a quick ...d5, which again can be played as a sacrifce, e5xd6 being met with the tempo-gaining ...Bf5.

I was under the impression that this was the case after 8 or 9. Bc4 instead of my games 8 or 9. Bf4.

A Panov with an unusual and suboptimal-looking fifth move by White.

Which makes you look over the main point (even if this sentence over 5.Nf3 holds still in case of an earlier g6 in the Panov; the Be2-f3 and Ne2 plan ain't more promising for white imo).

1.e4 c5 2.Sf3 .... is handing white more information about blacks opening play. After black's 2nd move white's choice between Lb5-structures, c3-structures, KIA, Ungarian Attack, Maroczy Bind-structures (or even open sicilians if you're on to blunder chess on that day Wink) is easier.

I think 2..g6 is a good anti-anti-Sicilian, since a lot of anti-Sicilian specialists don't seem very well prepared for it, probably because it leads to imbalances they're not used to handling. When I play 2..g6, 4.Qxd4 is the type of move I like to play against, because that move often indicates the player is trying to avoid mainline theory in the Dragon and Black's counterplay is not so easy to counter IMO. The positions can become sharp unlike many anti-Sicilians, so I think they're often more likely to favor the prepared Dragon player. I'll play 1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 g6 3.c3 Bg7 4.d4 cxd4 5.cxd4 d5 as Black, but not the analogous 1.e4 c5 2.c3 g6 lines in the c3 Sicilian, precisely because White has committed himself to Nf3 in the former. I don't think Black has any problems in those lines. I am much more concerned about encountering someone well prepared in the mainlines with 6.Be3 or a strong positional player in the Maroczy.

6. exd5 gives white imo a small advantage resulting into a position reached mostly via Caro-Kann, Panov, 30 years ago, when I studied this. It's drawish if white doesn't know the ending. If white is prepared he's playing for two results while black can only hope for real blunders.

Speaking of this line, I just played it. I am playing in the ICC 45 45 leagues, and noticed that my opponent had a really aggressive disposition, I prepared the Hyper-Accelerated Dragon to play against him, hoping for the bind or one of the more positional lines in the Bc4, and he surprised with 3. Qxd4, which I shouldn't have been surprised by at all. I vaguely remembered that Black was supposed to play ...b6 and ...Bb7, but that's all. I got the feeling that after my novelty 11...h5!?, White was perhaps a little better after 12. Kb1!, but he didn't play it. Anyway, here's the game:

Looking back on it, I don't know why I played 2...g6, since my opponent always played 3. d4. I just gave him some extra options.  Sad

I think 3.Qxd4 is quite problematic, I am still playing 2..g6 to avoid the Rossolimo and most people don't play 3.Qxd4 well but objectively I think White is better even in the safer Nc7 variation insead of the sharper Nb4 (my favourite). So I might comeback to the real Accelerated move order and find something I like against the Rossolimo because I fear one day someone will know how to play 3.Qxd4 against me. I never had problems against 3.c3 here, and there is people who try to get a Morra Gambit against 2..g6, this could be tricky.

Is there any way White can gain an advantage after 1 e4 c5 2 Nf3 g6 without going into the Open Sicilian, 3 d4 cxd4 4 Nxd4? The main alternatives are 3 d4 cxd4 4 Qxd4, 3 c3, and 3 Bc4 (3 Nc3 and 3 c4 usually transpose to the Open Sicilian).

After 1 e4 c5 2 Nf3, Dorian Rogozenko in his book "Anti-Sicilian's: A Guide for Black" only analyzes 2...d6, 2...e6, and 2...Nc6 saying other moves such as 2...g6 are weaker. Do you think he thinks 2...g6 is weaker?

Larry Kaufman in his book "The Chess Advantage in Black and White" recommends 3 c3 but after 3...Bg7 4 d4 cxd4 5 cxd4 d5 6 e5 (6 exd5 is another possibility but I think it's =) 6...Nc6 7 h3 Nh6 8 Be2, I think 8…Bf5 with the idea of …Be4, which Kaufman doesn't mention, is =.
