I'll be curious to see John Nunn's forthcoming book, which aims to enumerate the 100 most important middlegame ideas, with two examples for each.  I noticed that one of the diagram-bits on the front cover pertains to a standard sort of attack/sacrifice in IQP positions which I associate with a game Keene-Miles.  I'll go out on a limb and theorize that this book will be of more value to most players than the latest GM/Solid/Strategic/Whatever repertoire work ...

There´s still not much activity on the GAMBIT homepage,
but acc. to amazon.de we can expect (or hope for):

A Rock-Solid Chess Opening Repertoire for Black
by Viacheslav Eingorn, 176 pages, €18 , april 2012
http://www.amazon.de/Rock-Solid-Chess-Opening-Repertoire-Black/dp/1906454310/ref...

A Strategic Chess Opening Repertoire for White
by John Watson, 208 pages, €20 , may 2012
http://www.amazon.de/Strategic-Chess-Opening-Repertoire-White/dp/1906454302/ref=...

As soon as more details are revealed we may start own threads for each book but
until now we can only guess that John is probably writing about "c4/Nf3/g3 things".
~200 pages are not that much for a complete repertoire - probably these books are
the same style as those Chess Explained opening books ?!

The competition in chess publishing has probably never been harder than now, with Mongoose, Quality Chess, Chess Star (and probably 1-2 more that don't come to mind atm) challenging Gambit, New in Chess and Everyman.

Surprisingly the number of potential readers, i.e active players, have been steadily declining in the West for decades. But maybe China, India and Turkey makes the total number of players increase?

Anyway, in a few years time we'll probably know the winners and losers - my guess would be that the survivors will be those who managed to incorporate the new media best. (kindle, ipad etc, web, ebooks, video and so on)

In”Grandmaster Chess Move by Move” Nunn is describing some part of the history of the publisher in chess literature.
He claims (and certainly right so) that a publisher only makes a couple of thousand £ per published book (all costs reduced). To survive the publisher must 1. Keep a tight control of costs and 2. Produce a large number of books. The business looks a lot healthier if they are producing 20 – 30 books a year.
With this as a background I think that the decreasing of number of books would indicate that they are closing down in a controlled manner.
If that is correct it is a pity because they have produced a lot of very good chess books.

What kind of proof is that?

@Daniel: Burgess is born in 1968.
@F22: I am afraid that is very far from reality. Profit margins in chess publishing are very narrow.

Gambit is basically three guys who are all at least fifty.

John Nunn also recently said he is tired of putting out the same books over and over again.

If they put out a high quality (read hardcover with nice paper; the kind of stuff Quality Chess does) update of Anand's best games they can make a ton of money.

THE GAMBIT BOOK OF INSTRUCTIVE CHESS PUZZLES

Nunn's vastly increased output is another indicator that Gambit is downsizing. It seems as though Nunn spends his time on writing instead of editing.

It was mentioned on another board that there was  something to do with one principals retuning to his native land and one taking up some other interests. So I get the impression that they may be winding down their publishing or ceasing it all together.

Hopefully that isn't the case, but if it is it would be nice if they transitioned their catalog to some form of print on demand service so they would be available in the future. I think Everyman might have started doing this with some of their older titles.

They have not announced any new forthcoming book for months. Look here :

http://www.gambitbooks.com/forthcoming.html

But hopefully there will pop up new titles around christmas.

Do anyone know anything about this ?

I don't know, but maybe there are technical problems with their website. Or they might be about to sell their business, but that seems very unlikely.
