Aronian put it a splendid performance, but he owes much to his blindfold ability.
Carlsen did very well in the rapid-games.
These rapid games perhaps tells us something of the form of the candidates for the next world championship series:
Aronian is imo the favourite to be the next contender for the title.
Topalov performed above (my) expectation in the rapids, perhaps the fact that this is to a certain degree a friendly affair with not too much at stake suited him.
Gelfand and Kramnik's performances in the rapid-section where below what I expected but dont write them off yet, because both can perform well under the pressure of serious tournament conditions.

I'll add that I finally got a ChessPub Forum poll prediction correct!  Grin

Some people on ChessVibes trolled about Carlsen being the true winner due to his domination of the rapid. But Aronian was more consistent overall and fully deserves his victory.

Incidentally, Carlsen's rating performance in the rapid was 3087, with Aronian's 2980 performance in the blindfold being almost as impressive.

The tournament has become a two-horse race between Aronian on 11.5 and Carlsen on 11. Their nearest pursuers, Anand and Ivanchuk, are both on 8.5.

Yesterday he thought his rook was on d7 when it was actually on e7, and he only realized it was on e7 when he tried to move his rook there. And that was in the non-blind event! (jk...)

At least he didn't leave his queen en prise like Gelfand did. I think I have an idea why they're giving up these Amber tournaments...  Tongue If there were a very large prize I doubt you'd see mistakes like that... as it is, I doubt GMs train much for the event.

Tomorrow's match Giri-Kramnik could decide the battle for last place.

Which shows just how strong the event is.

I have always associated Morozevich with the Amber tournament. I just thought it a slight shame he is not playing in its last year. Maybe he was invited and declined - don't know. Just thought it'd be fitting to see him play there one last time.

Seth, looking at who is playing, I am not sure I agree. Who would you remove from this list to make room for Moro?

I love Moro's chess, but this is a really impressive list of players!

How about, all of them? According to this:

http://www.blindfoldchess.net/blog/2010/06/comparison_of_grandmaster_rankings_in...

Morozevich is the best-performing blindfold player based on blindfold tournaments.

They'll surely have some other blindfold events to replace this won't they?  Undecided

Also, I would be in favour of GMs being completely blindfolded/blinkered. This is how blindfold is intended, it matches the description. Staring at a board and imagining pieces going around it is easier than playing without any board. You can see the files opening up more clearly. Think of long moves, complicated mating nets involving knights where if you can see the squares it's a lot easier (errr.. not that I can play any blindfold properly).

I have to vote for Naka, just because, but Smyslov Fan has a point.  I think the field is a wee bit stronger here than Tata/Wijk aan Zee. Ten of the players are in the top 11, with Mamedyarov missing from the top 10, and Gashimov at No. 11.

Gelfand now sits at 16 and Giri at 43.

Still though, there were a few slagging off Naka as early as two years ago saying he didn't have the umm culture to play with the big boys. Sad

Glad that's been put to rest.  Smiley

Of course, if Ivanchuk wins it, I'd be equally happy.  He's been in the thick of it for so long, it'd be nice to see.

It's too bad Morozevich isn't playing.

I cast a sentimental vote for Ivanchuk. I know Naka's proven he's top 10 material, but I don't see him winning this.
