Not only does Plotkin's version of events seem more feasible, Spraggett, a Grandmaster, refuses to spell Plotkin's name correctly. He starts out spelling it "Potkin" and then switches to "Plotking". I don't know GM Spraggett, but it's the GM rather than the FM who comes off worse here.

Well, if you can earn an FM title by losing a game instead of drawing one can wonder if it's cheating indeed.

Did he get an FM-title by losing? I thought Spraggett assumed a paid dive.

Though personally I don't believe there was any cheating involved - I've seen (and occasionally made) some pretty stupid moves in trying to win a drawing position in tournament play. And using the fide time control of 30sec increment tend to lead to very long blitzgames which encourages both unfounded winning tries and objectively weaker play.
Plotkin's version doesn't sound unbelievable to me: http://www.chesstalk.info/forum/showthread.php?t=5117

How is this even possible? Can someone explain?  Undecided

Presumably he had also been cheating in his previous games?

This bit made me laugh:

“He came to me and admitted that he did it, and then apologized. He said: ‘I’m completely stupid, I’m really sorry.’ And indeed, it was very stupid of him to do it in the final round, because he had already scored his IM norm after the penultimate round.”

In all seriousness though this nonsense can't be worth the risk - how can this chap ever show his face in a chess hall again now?

Not to give anyone ideas but: http://www.spyzone.com/ccp0-prodshow/ScrambledRadios-earspyx6.html

They could have tiny cameras in glasses or clothes. Organizers will have to get their act together fast if they really want to stop this sort of thing. They should be jamming all of the common communication frequencies as standard. Cameras in the toilets should be the easiest thing to implement and the least of their concerns. For women they can easily have only women who can use the cameras.

“We had reached a complicated position. I had taken on b2 which was a bit risky. However, in a very concrete position where calculating was necessary, he was constantly away from the board. Three times, I made a move and it took 8-10 minutes for him to show up at the board. Naturally I started looking for him and I even waited for a while in the toilets. One toilet was occupied, but I didn’t hear any typical ‘toilet sounds’.

This sounds to me like it's reached the level of a farce for how easy it is. "hmm a complicated tactical position here, uh oh I think I have to go to the toilet again..." At least make it really hard to cheat.

I also don't think there should be trainers allowed to walk around the hall. There isn't any good reason they should be there during play.

But no French players involved!
I'm sure this sort of cheating (iPhone in the toilet) goes on quite a lot, and will become even more prevalent in the future. The temptation will be too great for a lot of people. Sad

It seems the penalties for the players have been increased. In Feller`s case his ban has been increased from 3 to 5 years and Hauchard got a 3 year playing ban as well.

The latest rumour in French chess circles is that both Feller and Wirig cheated in the European Championship! Ridiculous, almost certainly, but it now seems that any time a French player makes a good performance he will be suspected of cheating! Sad
Perhaps the French Federation could have handled this matter more discreetly? Only a few days ago a croupier at the local casino started going on to me about chessplayers cheating - he'd seen it on TF1! Angry

The title is fine with me.
Only a stupid will conclude from this title that all French people or all French chessplayers or the entire French Federation or even the entire French team are cheaters.

Well, I would just be very cautious about spreading blame.

I am not blaming the French Federation. Nevertheless, the fact remains that everyone involved was French, they are alleged to have cheated, and the cheating occurred at the Olympiad. Which explains the title of the thread!
I am happy to put up a poll to see what, if any, alternative title is preferred if anyone wants? Suggestions?

"French cheating at the Olympiad" can mislead people into thinking that the National team or federation cheated" Mr Kosten you haded nothing to Zoo fine point.

But the national team DID profit from cheating!

parisestmagique wrote on 04/10/11 at 12:18:16:
it's the French federation who revealed it to the world and took duly measures ...

They had little choice, can you imagine the outcry if they had tried to keep it hidden for even longer and the story had come out later? The mind boggles!

Dont you see the difference between profit from it and  organize, support it or be indifferent ?? When Marion Jones was taken  in the Olympic games cheating, do you call it "a American cheating"?? and America DID profit from it, winning medals for his country... What was the alternative ? Just say nothing, did England team protested ?

Well, I would just be very cautious about spreading blame.  Maybe the French chess authorities had little choice, but if they did the right thing, surely they are immune from criticism in this affair.
