http://www.amazon.com/Chess-Middlegame-Planning-Peter-Romanovsky/dp/0939298805

here these could supplement your options. The Peter Romanovsky books (Planning and Combinations)

I would say though, at that range a nice book on one side crushing the other in under 20 moves is great. (miniatures)

Yusupov's series - namely the orange books:http://www.qualitychess.co.uk/docs/14/artur_yusupovs_awardwinning_training_cours...

is popular with the local trainers.

The Yusupov course should be completed in order - first the two orange books (the third hasn't been published) , and then These 'orange' books (just two of them have been published) are great workbooks.

i.e. have the students get book 1.

Chernev's The Most Instructive Games of Chess Ever Played is one of the best chess books ever written for players at the 1500-1800 level and, although sadly out of print, still available.

Among the newer books, Neil McDonald's Giants of Chess Strategy is excellent and vastly underrated.  He takes a topical approach (rook on the 7th, etc.), rather than  going player by player, which makes this book more of an instructional manual than a games collection.

There are many classics that could also be recommended, including Michael Stean's Simple Chess, Nimzovich's My System, Euwe & Kramer's middlegame books, and the previously mentioned Art of Attack.

If you want to start them on a game collection, I'd suggest the Mammoth Book of the World's Greatest Chess Games as both inexpensive and enjoyable.  These are games that everybody ought to know.

Well-annotated games are a good source of instruction.  Batsford's two-volume collection of Keres' games would be useful even at the 1500 level, I believe.  There are two volumes.  Here is a link to one: http://www.amazon.com/Paul-Keres-Road-Top/dp/1879479354/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=boo...;

Futher you should strongly consider getting a copy of Max Euwe's Judgment and Planning in Chesshttp://www.amazon.com/Judgment-Planning-Chess-Max-Euwe/dp/0679143254

1500+ sounds like the right strength to read a complete positional manual.

Grooten (Chess Strategy for Club Players) or, if you can't find it or it's too expensive in your area, Hellsten (Mastering Chess Strategy) will get the job done. Grooten's is the more brilliant of the two, Hellsten's book is - in the positive sense - a no nonsense manual teaching the full catalog of chess strategy. He uses material tested on his own pupils and adds ca. 380 exercises.

The Jussupow books seem good. I can recommend Mednis and Crouch - Rate your endgame. Greet - Starting out: Accelerated Dragon is a very good book on the subject of Maroczy bind-type positions.

The Jussupow (Yussupov in English ?) course for players from 1500 - 1800 is excellent and covers all areas of the game. It's a series of three books each for the rating group up to 1500, up to 1800, up to 2100. The first two books of each series are translated and out. Don't buy the higher level books if your rating doesn't fit. They are real working books.

I am not sure Nunn's move by move book is so suitable for players rated 1500. As much of a fan as I am of Nunn's 'Secrets of Practical Chess'. I find it somewhat ridiculous the idea of a move by move book containing such basic phrases as 'White frees his queen and bishop, and at once plants a pawn in the center' (Nunn commenting on the move 1.e4) tossed together with analysis where 'exhaustive' would be very much of an understatement. Although 'Understanding Chess Move by Move' contains more verbal annotations than some of Nunn's other works (e.g. Secrets of ____ Endings), it is hard to imagine any 1500 player would bother to pick up the book again after sifting through game number one.

I would think that game collections of Morphy, Alekhine, Tal, or Fischer would be more suitable for your students. I was also going to suggest Weeramantry's 'Best Lessons of a Chess Coach', but seeing that I gave it away too long ago, I do not know if it will be too basic for your students. Perhaps other posters could fill you in on that one.

If the students have had a normal development, "Logical Chess Move by Move" is way too basic for 1500+ level.

Try FM Steve Giddins' two games collections from Gambit instead. On attacking play, besides Vukovic a good game collection with more modern examples is Christiansen's "Rocking the Ramparts". Aagaard's Attacking Manual is also highly praised.

In addition to Nunn's book, 'Logical Chess Move by Move' by Irving Chernev is quite good. If you want an instructional book on attacking play, 'The Art of Attack' by Vladimir Vukovic is highly recommended.

For a book on openings, there is Giddins's 'How to Build Your Chess Opening Repertoire'. If you are after a repertoire book then 'The Chess Advantage in Black and White' might be most suitable for your students.

Understanding Chess Move by Move, by Nunn, is a great book in this respect.
