It's a known thing, e.g. Nigel Davies advocated it for White in a book some years ago.  I know 3...c5 has been a "book" move.

It's true, Kyle!.. I tried it with white in two of my OTB games with excellent result. For my regret, I achieved only a draw when playing it in a correspondent game (BG-final Individual Accelerated Correspondent Chess Championship, 2011). There it is:

[Event "DIP ACC Chess"]
[Site "BCCF"]
[Date "2011.06.08"]
[White "Vasil Vasilev"]
[Black "Deyan Davidov"]
[Result "1/2-1/2"]

1. Nf3 d5 2. c4 dxc4 3. e4 c5 4. Bxc4 Nc6 5. Bb5
Bd7 6. Nc3 e6 7. O-O Nge7 8. d4 Nxd4 9. Nxd4 cxd4
10. Qxd4 Bxb5 11. Nxb5 Nc6 12. Qa4 Bc5 13. b4 Bxb4
14. Ba3 Bxa3 15. Qxa3 Qe7 16. Nd6 Kf8 17. f4 Rd8
18. e5 g6 19. Qc3 Rd7 20. Rad1 Kg8 21. Rd3 h6 22.
Qd2 1/2-1/2

Imho, best play from both sides - so I recommend it as the second player's answer to this setup.  Wink
Still I think that being the first player in an OTB game against an unprepared opponent I'll be ferocious with this 3.e4!?  Angry

I am trying my luck out there with the QGA. Then my inventive opponent threw this in my face:

1 Nf3 d5
2 c4 dxc4
3 e4!?

I tried 3.. b5 and got in a bunch of trouble.

A (2200) kibitzer who seemed to know a bit about every opening said maybe 3 .. e5 is the best. But 4 BxP Nc6 seems like a poor cousin of 1 e4 e5 2 Nf3 Nc6. I gave away a centre pawn for a c-pawn and he got a free tempo.

Houdini is undecided between Nf6, Be6, c5 and Bg4. I don't like using the computer at such an early stage though - does anyone have some tips about this strange move?
