I like the backhanded compliment that Kramnik himself said once about OFWAK. He said that he liked Khalifman's analysis of an opening line so much that he decided to try it himself!

As far as I know, the revised Kramnik series contains not only updated theory but major repertoire changes, in especially against QGD a change from classical Bg5 lines to Catalan. Of course this also affects early move orders against Symmetrical English, Semi-Tarrasch etc. [I can´t find my source but acc. to my memory the main point was 1.Nf3 Nf6 2.c4 e6 and now 3.g3 (new) instead of 3.Nc3 (old) ?!]
The differences between old vol.1 and new vol.1a+b are not very big (surely a good update!), but from volume 2 on the old and new versions are incompatible to a certain/large extent. If you not only pick some interesting parts out of the books but want to follow the proposed rep very closely you´ll surely get holes if you mix old and new volumes!. I read/heard somewhere that the new series is planned to have 7 volumes (??), but wouldn´t bet on any dates for the missing volumes. Maybe the chess book market just doesn´t need another high-quality Catalan book ...

He's updating the original 5, and now the updates are done up through 3a, I believe.

However, the ones already updated need to be updated by your own analysis. That's the price you pay for following main lines.

2288 USCF, 2186 FIDE.

FIDE based on just 27 games.

Here's a pertinent link:

Also, if you search for "OFWAK", you'll find quite a bit about these books here.

Opening for White according to Kramnik question

I've decided to make 1. Nf3 my second choice opening for white and will be buying the Kramnik series on this.

But I'm a bit confused on how many books there were in the series. From the research I've done there was initally 5 volumes, then volume 1 was re-released as v1a and v1b in 2006.

And I've also noticed that there was a volume 2 book in 2008 and a volume 3 book just recently.

So my question is are these new books (v2 and 3) updates on his older work or seperate books themselves? I just want to make sure I don't end up buying old editions when new ones are coming out.

Thanks.
