Kateshi Kitano - Hana Bi

The first time seeing this movie the violence did disturb me and I felt its a bad one. The second time I saw the violence as an artial expression and the film seemed to me one of the best movies ever.

Still astounded.

There are two older movies I used to watch all the time as a kid that I don't know the name of. One was about a US Bomber that crashed on an Island. It's crewed refashioned the Airplane as a ship in order to sail away from the island.
The 2nd movie was about this man who dies "too early" so he comes back to life as a dog owned by his grieving wife and child. 

How about a top 5 worst? My list would have 300, Battlefield Earth, Troy, Alexander and the Last Samurai

Quite strange. First you say "Pi" is on place 8 belonging to your top 10. And then later you write that the same movie is on place 45(!)  Smiley

Just saw an interesting Danish film called Adam's Apples, its director has practically created his own sub-genre in Danish film in some ways: low key realism paired with the absurd plus some occasional violence, and quite funny at the same time!

Why? It's just a genre. I estimate that 95% is total crap, but there are a few masterpieces too.

And the links on the page also mention [i]McCabe & Mrs Miller[/i], with a not too dissimilar ending - great soundtrack of Cohen songs btw.

- [i]Tasogare Seibei[/i] (Twilight Samurai ?) shares common themes with [i]The Great Silence[/i], and makes a lasting impression as well. It's a bit harsh to dub [i]il grande silenzio[/i] a spaghetti western! That makes me think on another great  "snowy western", possibly german, but the title escapes me. Can somebody help ?

- edit : that was [i]Day of the outlaw[/i] (Tag der Gesetzlosen), by hungarian director Endre Toth a.k.a. André de Toth.

The excellent M is from the early 30's. Metropolis from the same director is older.

- if that can help, Tchou Pantin is in fact Tchao Pantin, Tchao just being a french phonetic for ciao (same as Manu Chao). A really compelling movie - note that main actor Coluche was a comedian in the first place, it isn't obvious from this movie.

- Competing with M as the oldest possible movie, there is Murnau's Sunrise (1927), I saw it once at the Paris outdoor festival and in the end everybody was taken by the story despite the chilling weather! 

a few other films worth seeing imho :
- Tous les matins du monde (all the world's mornings, 1991). A conception of music in life, more restrained than Amadeus, though.
- Bela Tarr's The man from London (2007), a tribute to a past era of french film (La belle equipe, le jour se leve, les enfants du paradis...)
- Kekexili (Mountain patrol, 2004), a well-deserved "truly breathtaking" for this one. 
- A separation (director: Ashgar Fahradi, 2011). a near-life experience!
- El violin (2005, F. Vargas). Que viva Don Plutarco !

- and a tribute from the French (for once) : The Artist, M.Hazanavicius, 2011.

Just thought I'd bump this thread with a mention of The Straight Story which I happened to zap into on tv, but it was so good in a low key down to earth way that I kept watching it to end. I was really surprised to find out it was a Disney production directed by David Lynch...

I guess I'll better watch Jean de Florette first.
The Runaway Train is a good movie; I enjoyed it very much. But I don't particularly wish to see it again, so it hasn't made it on my list.
