	American Beauty is probably my favorite movie of all time. I'm not arguing that it's the 'best' by any means, but it's by far my favorite.

	I went back and reviewed my OP, thinking I might want to revise it somewhat. But I find that in the two years since posting, my preferences haven't changed. It seems that I am somewhat isolated in my appreciation of Terence Malick, but that's understandable. One movie that I don't think has been mentioned is The Sheltering Sky, Bernardo Bertolucci, 1990. Opinion is about as divided about this as it is about Malick's The Thin Red Line, which is on my list. Like Malick's film, it is beautiful, poetic and disturbing. I don't feel at all ashamed of loving it. Somebody mentioned that not a single film on my list was made in this millennium. District 9, Neill Blomkamp 2009 and Beasts of the Southern Wild, Benh Zeitlin 2012 (this one made since my OP) are the only two that I have seen that I would rank highly. But I haven't seen Malick's Tree of Life. @Anthony.R.Brown: I also like Nicolas Cage when he's not playing in an action film.

	It's actually based on two of Bordewijk's novels, "Karakter" and the much later "Dreverhaven en Katadreuffe". I only read the former, but I think the movie does it justice.

The second time I saw the violence as an artial expression and the film seemed to me one of the best movies ever. Still astounded. That'll be Takeshi Kitano. Yup, a great movie, love it. Have seen all his, but this is the only one, sadly, that reaches the higher level. Yes, Hanabi is a beautiful piece. Worth noting too that the artwork in the film is also Kitano's. Means 'fireworks' btw as the kanji (Chinese ideographs) hana = flower, bi/hi = fire. Travelling around the area, just across the water, I also suggest: Oldboy http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0364569/ Both are masterpieces.
