Thanks again. As you see I am really an amateur. I am not even capable of presenting this argument correctly:

Sigh.
Not that I buy this.

Well, yes, either Jesus wasn't born in 6 AD or he wasn't 30 yet when crucified (íf he was crucified) or he wasn't trialed by Pontius Pilatus. Pick your choice.

I don't think that, Lendering does and he knows a few things about stuff like this. It does matter as far as the credibility of FJ goes and thus it matters if someone states that Pilatus was a cruel authority.

There are two problems with this.
Why should March 25th be the date of the annunciation?
According to Lucas 2:8 there were shepherds in the Palestinian fields at night. In december they would have been frozen to death.

March 25th was always the date of the annunciation and Christmas was chosen 9 months later. Prior to a separate celebration for the Nativity of Christ, it was rolled into Theophany (Epiphany in the West) on January 6th along with everything else Christ did before his baptism (which is what Theophany/Epiphany is about). This stuff far predates the Gregorian calendar issue - it's more like stuff happening from 4th-8th century in both East and West. Annunciation colliding with Lent and Easter (Pascha) is no big deal in the Christian East. When Annunciation collides with Pascha, Pascha does not take precedence, but instead you have "kyriopascha", a combination of the two.

BTW Byzantine new year was always September 1st. You always need to remember what is going on in the New Rome when making pronunciations about this sort of thing...

Jesus was born March 25, 4 BC. He started his ministry at age 30. It lasted for 3 years. He was crucified at 33 years of age.

In the old days, the New Year started in March, not December. The Catholic Church moved the New Year to January 1 and Christmas to December 25 because both holidays were too close to Easter and Lent in March/April.  This was a result of the Gregorian calendar being adopted in Europe in the 1580s and later.

MNb:

Well, if Jesus was born in 6 A.D. and he was crucified by Pilate it would mean he would have to have been crucified at the age of 30 or before. In other words, the part about Jesus having been sent to Pilate is supposedly correct, the part about Pilate judging him and sending him to be crucified is supposedly correct, but somehow the part about him having been 32 or 33 isn't. The chronology is off.

It really doesn't matter to me if you think Flavius Josephus has it in for Pilate. Maybe yes, maybe no. I don't think its necessary to paint him as being cruel by the standards of the day, when "maintaining order" as you put it is necessary ( I still think its unlikely he would have gotten involved, but for the sake of argument, let's say he did) then he wouldn't hesitate to put an upstart down. I just don't think it makes sense to think that he would have been torturing himself as portrayed in passion plays, etc...

SmyslovFan:  Polycarp met John? Do we know this outside of Irenaeus' writings?

Ok, I took for granted that a source that placed Suetonius at c50CE was accurate. He was born 69CE according to my more reliable sources.

Regarding the Pauline letters: Try every one of them!

Paul was considered the first Christian for very good reasons. The introduction to Romans one describes Paul as a "servant of Christ Jesus", Corinthians 1:1: "Paul, called to be an apostle of Jesus Christ through the will of God"
Cor.2:1 Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God,

All of his letters begin in a similar vein, and Jesus is brought up by name repeatedly throughout these letters.

I did not want to imply that it should be a problem for you. I still don't get why Jesus being crucified at the age of 30 (or even 29) should mean that the trial could not have been presided over by Pilatus. Your maths will be right and mine hopefully too, but the oldest samples of the Gospels are written several decades after that trial. The authors may have had their maths wrong.

I didn't say he was recalled for that act in particular, but rather that he had a reputation for being cruel and maybe even savage.

The source is still the same: Flavius Josephus. He had a political reason to give Pilatus that reputation. There is nobody known who defended him, not even himself - except later christians and they don't count for obvious reasons.

ghenghisclown wrote on 07/20/11 at 23:45:48:
Even if this view is "propaganda" and I'm incorrect, it is still very unlikely that the real Pilate would have either gotten involved in this Jewish affair or cared enough to agonize over which man to send to his death.

Maintaining order - an important task for a governor - should have been enough reason to get involved.

Mark, you may want to actually read the Pauline letters. Paul mentions Christ repeatedly in each of them. He mentions Jesus Christ by name and describes what Christ said and did.

I have to admit that I haven't read all Pauline letters, only several. There are quite a few and some are long too. So it would be nice if you could give me a reference. As far as I know he only refers to him as Christ.

Smyslov_Fan wrote on 07/20/11 at 23:32:12:
MNb, for such a minor character, it's amazing that there are actually some references to Christ (Chrestus) as early as Suetonius and Pliny, but there are.

Suetonius' reference to "Chrestus" dates from about 50 CE, while Pliny's is a bit later.

Suetonius was born around 70. Plinius in 62.

http://www.livius.org/su-sz/suetonius/suetonius.html
http://www.livius.org/pi-pm/pliny/pliny_y.htm

Both wrote when there were already several christian communities, so they are not independent.

Smyslov_Fan wrote on 07/20/11 at 23:32:12:
Or are you really trying to suggest that Paul was writing about some other founder of his faith? What exactly is your point in making that claim?

No, other people are and I want to make very sure that they are wrong. Rejecting Paulus as primary evidence does not mean that I accept the hypothesis that Paulus used the notion Christ as some abstract concept of Logos or whatever. I wrote explicitly that I find the theories of various Jesus-mythologists much more problematic.
I'm just a sceptic. Or an advocate of the devil, if you like.

Smyslov_Fan wrote on 07/20/11 at 23:32:12:

No. Early First Century. Of course they very likely can be writtten earlier. Theories which date the gospels earlier are extrapolations. That's no reason at all to dismiss them.
Still this is not the point. If we can't be entirely sure that the gospels have two independent origins we have to apply the principle of testis unus, testis nullus. That's why Flavius Josephus is so important; and the chain Jesus - John - Polycarpus - Irenaeus.
Your truly advocate of the devil doesn't see how this can be dismissed without turning to absurd conspiracy theories.

... I just didn't understand how being reasonably sure Pilate was real is an answer to Arcticmonkey's point  that New Testament stories "are never confirmed by anything else."

This is like saying that Lincoln's role in Griffith's Birth of a Nation is confirmed because we know Lincoln was real.

....

Quote:
You can guess about 5th Century fabrications as much as you like.

Uh yeah. Its a fabrication. SURPRISE! But way to gloss my point. It still features a historical character!

Quote:
And why exactly would Jesus being crucified when he was 30 - if he was crucified - be a problem?

Its a problem because he was supposed to have started his ministry at that age. There isn't enough time for him to have started the ministry etc, unless he was baptized, preached, and did all that other stuff starting at 27 years of age or so.

This isn't really a problem for me, I was referring to the view that Jesus' trial could not have been presided over by Pilate. That's all.

Quote:
Who says Pilatus was recalled for crucifying Jesus?

I didn't say he was recalled for that act in particular, but rather that he had a reputation for being cruel and maybe even savage. This is at odds with the view of Pilate going around muttering, "Veritas...veritas" to himself.

Even if this view is "propaganda" and I'm incorrect, it is still very unlikely that the real Pilate would have either gotten involved in this Jewish affair or cared enough to agonize over which man to send to his death.

Josephus wrote after the fall of the Temple (70 CE), which almost certainly served as the impetus for the followers of Jesus to document their own history.

Archeological evidence in the form of transcripts of the gospels date to about 90 CE. The Pauline letters date to about 50-60 CE.

There were eye-witnesses to Jesus still alive after the fall of the Temple. Nobody questioned whether Jesus lived or whether he was a rabbi. They only questioned his orthodoxy and whether he was the Son of God.

At some point you are beyond proof, ie it is impossible to proof or disproof something. That happens a lot in the soft sciences.

It happens in physics too. How are we going to decide if Bohm's Theory is better or worse than common Quantummechanics (the Copenhagen version)?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bohm_interpretation

Anyhow, on that excellent Lendering site there happen to be two articles related to this problem:

http://www.livius.org/th/theory/theory-maximalists.html
http://www.livius.org/th/theory/theory-testis.html

I know, I am not entirely up to date on quantum mechanics anymore, but this part I knew (hurray). The real problem is that people dont understand science. At some point there are conflicting theories which can't be disproven (and no Intelligent design doesnt fall into that category, it is easily disproven by watching a Fnoord game). The other problem is that people dont understand the issue at all (unfortunately those are the guys in charge). In this case (the gospels), you can't get much further then being able to prove or disprove certain particulars, then again I am preaching to the choir;)

If nothing else works, a total pig-headed unwillingness to look facts in the face will see us through.

I happen to disagree. The oldest Roman sources are from the early 2nd Century. They are not independent as there were already christian communities in the entire eastern part of the Meditarranean Basin.
There are no (relatively) contemporary orthodox jewish written sources either.
So the problem really boils down to: how reliable are the two reworked quotes from Flavius Josephus?
Well, I'm absolutely not an expert on this. I understand that most scholars think the two quotes reliable enough. Moreover I find the theories of various Jesus-mythologists clearly more problematic than the hypothesis of a historical Jesus. It's easier to create myths around someone who actually existed - and remember that in the first Century there were quite a few messias-claimants around in Palestina - than around a fictional character.

The Gospels are not "primary" sources of the life of Jesus in the sense that they were not written by the Apostles themselves.

The letters of Paul are just about the earliest primary documents of Christianity in existence. They were written by someone who met the Apostles. There is overwhelming evidence from Roman documents to Paul's letters to archealogical evidence and even oral traditions that there was an historical Jesus. Even the Jewish orthodoxy of the time agreed that there was a rabbi named Jesus who was executed by the Romans.

The Gospels were written a generation or two after the events they describe. They were collected and crafted, almost certainly from a single source, "Q", which contained the sayings, acts,  and some speeches of Jesus. This single source is not extant. They each have a slightly different perspective, with the Gospel of John being the most radically different of the bunch. It's possible that the Gospel of John did not rely on "Q" at all. There is some evidence that The Acts of the Apostles was written by an eye-witness to the events described there. The tradition is that John wrote it, but it may have been transcribed by one of John's followers.

John was the last living apostle, and there are independent primary sources that verify he was the bishop of Antioch. Polycarp met him.

That there was an historical Jesus is beyond question. Whether he was the Son of God is a question of faith. The simple answer to the question in the subject of this thread is:

People are Christians because they believe that Jesus is the Son of God.
