That's what Tertullianus and Irenaeus write. It's a bit like you (or me) telling your (or mine) children about your (or mine) grandparents and the children writing it down.

Hold on there, John the Apostle met Polycarp around 100 A.D.?  And Paul mentions the Virgin Birth in his Epistles? REALLY?

My response that there was an historical Jesus (of which I am nearly 100% certain, as an historian).

Oh, so am I. The simplest theory is always the best. It's just that scepticism is a good method to find out how certain we can be (thanks, René Descartes).
It's the second part of your answer that I think highly unsatisfactory and very uncomfortable. But I also think that the only sensible and fruitful debate runs as follows:

Theist: Credo.
Atheist: Non Credo.

After which it's time to get a beer. Smiley

Thx, MNb. I wasn't sure whether to return that paragraph to this section or not. I'm glad you decided to do so on your own.

My response that there was an historical Jesus (of which I am nearly 100% certain, as an historian) but the question of his divinity is a personal one may be unsatisfactory. But it's the only one I feel comfortable giving.

Well, you decide. But I have transferred part of my post back:

Personally I find the question of the OP not that fascinatingl. Eg S_F's answer is in my eyes not satisfactory at all, but I'm 100% sure we won't get anywhere if I am going to doubt it in this thread.
I only attack religious people - and then I do it mercilessly - if they try to tell me that their views are superior to mine. S_F doesn't belong to that category; neither does my girlfriend.
As a consequence I do not like a similar attitude of atheďsts either; based on the introduction and one paragraph I strongly dislike The God Delusion.

The website argues that the Gospel story cannot be found in the epistles.

I never have bought that argument for the simple reason that there can be a lot of other explanations. You gave one - a plausible one. I have reread Doherty's argument yesterday and found it unnecessarily complicated.
What I also thought very weak - on another page of the same site - is the argument "in this case absence of proof means proof of absence because the absence of proof is overwhelming".
I suppose these are the reasons Doherty's colleagues - he ís a professional historian - is not taken seriously by the vast majority of his colleagues.

I think a very strong case can be made that when all "these things" did not "come to pass" before "this generation passed away", early Christians experienced their first deep schism.  A drastic re-evaluation of Christ's teachings, message, etc., was needed to continue in the faith, and this is when what we think of as orthodox Christianity (notice the small 'o') began to develop.  It started to change shape and become it's own religion, and a mythology began to be assembled.

That's obviously the simplest explanation, matching everything we know about human nature. The early christians even had to rework their theology if no schism took place; this is less relevant in this context.

In my opinion, the reason orthodox Christianity "made it" when it was, in fact, a minority opinion among the various Christian sects for almost 300 years, has to do with Constantine.  But these are subjects that entire universtiy classes are devoted to--even entire careers.  I'm fascinated with them and think that anyone with a genuine interest should start by taking a class or two in college if they can.

Alas there are no college classes on this subject in my neighborhood, so I'll have to rely on Jona Lendering. He has written about Constantine recently:

http://rambambashi.wordpress.com/2011/07/13/common-errors-40-constantines-conver...

In my opinion the statement that orthodox catholicism made it has to do with several more things than Constantine's conversion only. Three other important factors: the Roman Army early 4th Century consisted of many christian soldiers; christianity was very well organized from the beginning; christianity was very accessible.

Just to be clear: my background is in modern (19th century) Europe. I taught a couple of introductory courses in Western Civ as a grad student. I am comfortable discussing this and other historical topics, but I'm not an expert by any stretch. I would expect most serious Religion majors to know at least as much as I do about early Christianity. And with today's internet, anyone can check on the facts without any expertise whatsoever.

Well if you taught a college course, S_F, you probably know more about this stuff than I do.  The Gnostic Gospels by Pagels is abslutely one of favorite books on Christian history; it deals with so much more than just what the title implies, and it's quite concise and well written.

And no, to set the record straight, I did not study at Princeton.  But after she retired, Pagels taught a few courses out in California at UCSB and some other schools.  I forget the title they give to visiting professors...anyway that's why I say I was very lucky; I took two courses from her in two different California schools.

In my opinion, the idea that Paul's "young woman" meant virgin is pure apologetics, but I'd rather not get into it on a chess message board.  I don't think Paul had any idea of the virgin birth narrative.

Wow!

I taught a college course using Elaine Pagels' The Gnostic Gospels as a text.  I respect her work very much.

You studied history at Princeton?  I'm doubly impressed! That is the single best history program in the US!

Regarding Paul's use of "young woman", I don't know for sure, but I thought the Greek of the time differentiated between a maiden and a young married woman. (One can see this clear distinction in the case of Joan of Arc, about 1400 years later. After she was raped by Anglo-French guards she no longer called herself a maiden.)

Jesus was born March 25, 4 BC. He started his ministry at age 30. It lasted for 3 years. He was crucified at 33 years of age.

Unfortunately none of the details of Jesus' life can be asserted with any confidence.  The canonical Gospels themselves paint quite a different picture and don't agree on various aspects of the events surrounding his birth.  Where did Jesus' parents flee to after being warned he was in danger?  It depends on what Gospel you read.  When did the wise men appear--before or after the presentation at the temple?  It depends on what Gospel you read...

One good exercise everyone should do, in my opinion, is to read the Gospels in parallel instead of one after the other.  You would be surprised at how the answer to many questions regarding Jesus' life is "it depends on what Gospel you read."  But I think I've said enough on this subject for now...

Everyone should learn to think for themselves and pursue Truth in an honest fashion.  Again, good luck, enjoy the journey and don't be afraid to see where it leads you.  That's the best advice I can give anyone.

Well, it's true. There isn't a single narrative of Jesus' life in any of the letters. The letters aren't Gospels, they're letters. The letters do mention key events in Jesus' life (including Christ's virgin birth and his baptism by John the Baptist), some of his sayings, and that he was crucified, died and rose again.

During the first century, the earliest disciples believed the end of the world was near. They didn't need to write the Gospel story, it was spread orally. This is not at all strange for that period. It wasn't until the second generation of Christians that people thought to write down the Gospel narrative in a single source. (Unless the "Q" document turns up and is dated to ~50CE, as some surmise.)

I took quite a lot of religion classes in college, and in two was actually fortunate enough to be taught by Elaine Pagels, arguably the English-speaking world's leading expert on Christianity in classical antiquity, and the Gnostic texts.  So I'm fairly well versed in Christian history, theology, etc., for a layman.

Anyway I agree with the gist of what you said, Smyslov_Fan.  However, Paul does not mention the virgin birth AT ALL that we know of.  Read in Greek, he deliberately chooses words that should probably be translated as "young woman" when it would have been simple to choose the word "virgin" instead.  And this is not a case of him using a euphemism; he uses the same phrase to describe others that are clearly not virgins.

The short answer to the question "Why are people Christian?" is probably that despite being a logical fallacy, the Argumentum ad Populum is extremely effective and probably explains much of human history, politics, etc.  If you're honest with yourself you'll admit that you're quite susceptible to this as well.  If everyone in your life that you love, respect, etc., asserts that something is true, it takes a lot of willpower and strength to conclude the opposite.

The long answer must have a lot to do with evolutionary biology, behavioral psychology, neuroscience, etc.  You might start by finding some Robert Sapolsky lectures online.  Or going to college.

March 25th was always the date of the annunciation and Christmas was chosen 9 months later.

There are two problems with this.
Why should March 25th be the date of the annunciation?
According to Lucas 2:8 there were shepherds in the Palestinian fields at night. In december they would have been frozen to death.

There aren't any awesome reasons for it, it's just what people thought, and they thought it before fixing the date of Christmas. And the December 25th date for the Nativity doesn't seem absurd to the Palestinian (or Syrian or Lebanese) Christians I know, not that anybody really asserts a March 25th Annunciation or a December 25th Nativity - I'm just telling you the story put forth doesn't quite fit together when you look at the history of the celebration of the feasts.
