Maybe that claim is not so silly since with the Knight still on b1 White has other options.

After 1.e4 c5 2.c3 e6 3.d4 d5 4.exd5 exd5 I have seen 5.Be3 recommended. After a plausible continuation like 5... c4 6.b3 cxb3 7.axb3 Bd6 8.Bd3 Nc6 9.Qf3 White has ideas like Ne2-g3-f5 or h2-h4. I´m not sure if this is enough for += but it is entirely different from the French Tarrasch.

I recall that as being a hot topic something like 17-18 years ago; I think it surely isn't generally recognized as leading to +=.

I have the impression that a significant obstacle to White's += aspirations is 1. e4 c5 2. c3 e6 3. d4 d5 4. ed ed 5. Nf3 Nc6 6. Bb5 Bd6 7. 0-0 Ne7 8. dc Bxc5 9. Nbd2 0-0 10. Nb3 Bb6 (in the Tarrasch move-order this retreat is well-met by Re1 plus Be3, before ...Nf5 is available).

You're right, my claim that White is better after 4.ed5 is just silly. I was thinking by analogy of the 3.Nd2 c5 4.Ngf3 Nc6 5.ed5 ed5 6.Bb5 line, but c3 doesn't really help White and gives Black time to develop his light-squared bishop actively.

The line 1. e4 c5 2. c3 e6 3. d4 d5 4. exd5 exd5 is reminiscent of the French Tarrasch line 1. e4 e6 2. d4 d5 3. Nd2 c5 4. exd5 exd5 except White plays c3 eventually. I am not sure how White can even aspire to an advantage since if these lines are like the 3. Nd2 c5 French, where I remember 3...c5 being described as already equal...

3. d4 is the most principled response to the Sicilian defense.  Black is permitting White a substantial lead in development and an open file for the Queen in return for his pawn advantage (d pawn vs. c pawn).  This doesn't mean you have to play it or even that it is the only route to an advantage.  But it is the strategically richest variation in the opening, if not in all of chess.

Questions:

TN : "2.c3 - In my view the Alapin is as good as the Rossolimo/Moscow. I like White's chances of achieving an edge in the 2...d6 3.d4 Nf6 4.Bd3 and 2...e6 3.d4 d5 4.ed5 lines. "  Q: What's the chance for an edge for White in the second line?  Doesn't look like an obviously bad IQP line.

Stefan: My disrespect (such as it is) for antisicilians was generated primarily by Federov-Kasparov, Wijk aan Zee... [goes and looks up the year] 2001.  Possibly the single most one-sided Black win in the history of chess.  And I'm not disputing the point - Kasparov got in trouble in the antis too - but wow, when he was on...

Probably for club level i.e. 150 ECF or 1800 FIDE, anti-Sicilians are fine, but how to play anti-Sicilians and avoid (Open Sicilian) successfully for 2300+? I think if one for some reason attempts to avoid playing the Open Sicilian, 2. c3 as GM Sveshnikov continuously plays could be the best...

Well, it could be, but not really for avoiding theory (judging by his latest book, e.g.). But I wouldn't want to say it is the best, just a good alternative I suppose. Or is the Advance French also "the best" French alternative?

As I see it, the original question is very complex and really a matter of what types of positions would be most promising for White. This of course varies depending on the player.

I rather think most of us have many more problems when playing GMs than the opening Smiley

This is also my opinion!

I haven't played any GM's OTB, only blitz or simul. But without knowing much theory I have been fine in many games out of the opening. E.g. pawn up against P. Cramling in a standard type Catalan with no comp for her until I blundered because I forgot I was a pawn up!

But what happens when playing titled players? Knowing Anti-Sicilians will not be too helpful if grandmasters will more easily answer against them than the open Sicilians.

This is the wrong question. Titled player are stronger than most non-titled players if titles do have a meaning.

The argument about playing the opening you like is the correct one. Avoiding any opening out of fear leads to the friendly advice to confront yourself with it to become better.

A Gedankenexperiment leads me to the following structure:

Phrase: I don't play the open (closed or whatever) sicilian because my opponent is probably better prepared.
Background: I'm saying this this for some years.
Consequence: I have to ask myself why I don't change this state.

On-topic: There's probably no best Anti-Sicilian. You have simply to work on what you like and you get an complete equal middlegame with white and a slightly worse endgame with black as in any opening. Chess is hard!  Wink

Actually one of my main points is that club level players will often have rather more empirical experience of the credible anti Sicillians than they do of open Sicillians. And they'll probably have at least looked something plausible up.

Now I've gathered this sort of thing in the UK, and other countries may well differ! I'd certainly hope they do Smiley I mean there was one year at the British where about half way through the field had managed more Smith Morra's than open Sicillian's....

I don't have any problem with people choosing to play the anti's because they like them. Just not out of fear Smiley

I seem to remember some danish dude saying the same thing. On the other hand, both Fischer and Kasparov kinda liked the open d-file and attacking chances, IIRC.

Fischer and Kasparov belong to another generation than the Hypermoderns, so what do they know? Kasparov got some bad positions with Black in Closed Sicilians. Wink However, my sarcasm should have included more self-irony, since the Closed Sicilian 2.Nc3 often feels like reviving Monsieur Philidor: pieces behind the pawns. - There are enough antidotes vs the Open Sicilian which are fine for Black. On the other side, it happens only rarely that Sicilian players invest time into studying, say, 2.a4.

The problem with that logic is that strong Sicilian players probably do not have to study 2. a4 Smiley I doubt grandmasters are required to seriously consider such a move, and even then they probably study anti-Sicilians quite extensively nowadays. Then if your opponents study both Open Sicilians and anti-Sicilians extensively, what to do next?   Smiley

Yes, and 2.a4 basically is a high-class waiting move to reach the Rossolimo. After 2.Nf3 g6, you don't get the Bb5/Nc6 thing.

Stefan, your last posts seem to miss a few smilies.  Wink

I´m not yet ready to believe in 2.a4. Since 2.Na3 has proven to be a fine waiting move after 2... Nc6 3.Bb5 perhaps an article in one of the next issues of Kaissiber may convince me.  Cheesy

I think 2. a4 can't be too wrong, since it is a move White makes in many Sicilians anyway. But it can't be too critical, just a game of Chess!
