I expect that even they don't have all the data in that form, so that's probably a pipe dream.  Paying for all that keypunching would cost a fortune, and it would then have to be checked for errors.  So it is, indeed, behind the times.

All they need is some everyday OCR software and to scan in pages one at a time. Maybe someone else is a bit behind the times Wink (jk).

... quite some time later ...   Sad

Finally I managed to follow Alias' advice (not that it's too complicated, although the installation procedure sometimes varies from one file to another, it's just that you have to be ready for doing half an hour of somehow annoying work).

Does anybody know if the games < YB 62 are also available somewhere?

Best regards,

That sounds like a good idea, thank you, Alias!

You can download the games at http://www.newinchess.com/Yearbook/Default.aspx?PageID=223

I have a NiC yb database. If I want to check if an opening line has been in the ybs I check that database first.

Don't check me with no lightweight stuff.

I would be already very helpful if their indexing where more detailed. Their NIC-codes are detailed enough, but their "Search in Yearbook Archives" seems to accept only the format [XX N.N] (with XX standing for the two-letter-code, and N for a number). It shouldn't cause to much work to extend this system by accepting a third number ([XX N.N.N]), as they are often used, e.g SL 3.1.15 for the Chebanenko Slav with 5.c5. As it is, you have to enter SL 3.1 (entering "SL 3.1.15" leads to no results) and get 19 hits. Of them, only one covers definetely 5.c5, 6 definitely don't cover it, and the rest remains "unclear", as the title doesn't really say what to expect. So in this case you have to check 12 books "by hand", if they contain anything of interest.

Its maybe not so easy for chess stuff though, because its not PDF/Ebook format they're often after.  Putting it all into a single coherent chess base style thing probably takes a non trivial amount of knowledge/effort.

I doubt it would cost much. Harvard used Kenya to digitize their entire library of all their magazines (some going back to 1636). I don't know the sum total of what was spent but I remember monthly wages being as low as $2. It didn't take much more than a year. I don't remember how many workers they had though. But I can't imagine the total cost being very high.

I'm pretty sure NiC used to do CD-ROMs of the yearbook actually.  But they stopped at some point, I think when Chessbase won the database wars...

I have all the NIC Yearbooks back to #7, in hardback.  They do have some utility as reference volumes, because you can look up on the NIC website which issues have articles about given openings.  Nevertheless it would be fantastic if NIC would issue them in magnetic form.

I expect that even they don't have all the data in that form, so that's probably a pipe dream.  Paying for all that keypunching would cost a fortune, and it would then have to be checked for errors.  So it is, indeed, behind the times.

Not to single out NIC, but they and other chess publishers need to start delivering their content electronically.  It's the wave of the future and chess publishers need to get with the program.  Even Everyman, which has many eBooks, needs to start delivering its content in both formats simultaneously - currently the paperback is first available and then you wait months or years for the eBook (if they make it available) [in fairness, they may have offered simultaneous delivery on one publication].

I'm starting a vacation today and am able to take all of my ChessPub and Everyman Ebooks with me, and have all of my Fritz Trainers on my laptop, but none of my NIC, Gambit or Quality Chess chess books are making the trip - quite a pity.

I don't know if there is an economic reason for the failure to provide ebook delivery (perhaps those in the know could offer some guidance), but I think the future is now and chess publishers need to wake up and smell the coffee.
